I heard from an American relative of mine on Social Security that the Republican Senate may block the incoming budget on March 4th, and that this could shut down the government, and affect Social Security, and other programs. Does anyone have any more information about this?

I have heard various attacks that Republicans were going to kill Social Security most my adult life. So far, it has always been a blatant lie.

Anytime Republicans call for financial responsibility in government, the Democrats start this rumor.

I've heard the rumours too, but this is the first time that I'veheard it "might" happen so soon. As you can see by my screen name, I am NOT an American, but my relative is.

Yes, it is true. That's why hubby and I aren't buying anything with the little bit of money we do have saved because we might need it to pay our bills with till the government decides on what they're going to do. Any type of government check, social security, ssi or ssdi won't go out till they agree on the budget which isn't right because the rest of us rely on our checks. We don't have a lot of money stashed somewhere like the high officals do. Wish we did! But we don't and they know they have us all by the seat of our pants but they don't give a damn about us. It's all about them and what they want and the money they can make and to do what with? To put it in a bank account to sit on. Damn b@st@rds!

The problem is that I live with this particular American relative, and between the two of us, we only bring in a couple thousand a month, and $600 of that goes to friggen RENT!! And then there are the other bills, and we do have to eat, don't we? Stupid political B@$T@RDS should all be taken out somewhere and shot, for threatening to do something like this

It has not happened in the past, and this is the first that I have heard of the possibility. As much trouble as the economy is in, that would not be good.

From what I recall during the last shut down of 1995 when Clinton was in office the only thing was non-essential government services were shut down. I don't recall the military or senior citizens not getting their checks. Cut off the military and seniors pay and you will probably see a revolution.

Whenever the Democrats want to spend more and tax more, they threaten that if they can't do so, the sky will fall. As mentioned by others, it is non-essential services that stop, not the essential ones. They scare people to get support. They also know that the longer they drag out this budget vote the more it cuts into the 61 billion savings of the Republican proposal. Therefore, successive continuing resolutions to keep the government running each month will whittle away that month's savings.

Actually the budget was passed through the House by Republicans. The Senate is a majority of Democrats so shooting down the budget would be the Senate DEMOCRATS. They will not like the cuts made and so will vote down the budget. Supposedly, social security will still be paid out. But with how hot the politics are right now, I wouldnt be surprised if it isnt, "just to make a point".
If I was living on social security, I would hang onto every penny right now... or any federal program for that matter.

As far as Social Security is concerned the government has shut down many times in the past. It shut down several times under the Reagan and Clinton administration and Social Security payments were not affected.

I watch Fox News and the Republicans do not control the senate so if the budget is shot down, it will be all the Democrats fault. I do not think that the pensioners or those on medicare or social security have anything to worry about. I feel this is just fear mongering. The democrats want to keep all their entitlements and spend, spend, spend, but it does not work. I am still waiting until they take all those "Praise the almighty Obama" books out of my local Coles bookstore but that is another subject.

It's a lie, plain and simple. BOTH sides are fighting over the budget. Republicans have already passed a budget in the house and democrats, who have the majority in the senate, are preventing it from passing there.
Theoretically it could cause a government shutdown if they don't get it worked out, but that's not going to happen. They'll likely just pass a temporary budget that lasts 2 months so they can bicker longer about how best to waste our money.

It isn't a rumor if the Budget doesn't pass the Government shuts down. So it will be an interesting time as it would be the first time in recent history or in the history of this country as I remember where the Federal Government Shuts down until the budget is passed.
What is going on is the Senate is still largely Democrat and well the Senate is drafting their own Budget and is set to not pass the Houses Budget so they can try to get theirs through so what could very well happen is they fail to put in the new budget and the Government Shutdown happens in which people receiving money from the Federal Government won't receive their money. I am not sure what this does to the DOD or other vital organizations to our defense.

They are not going to "shut down" the government. That would mean that the big dogs wouldn't get paid so that's not going to happen. They can work on it until they get things in order there is no need to shut anything down. And of course it will always be "the other guys" fault. But the truth is that they can make it work if they want to it's all publicity.

That's no "rumor" .... republican leaders have done all things to destroy social security ... they want and have wanted it privitized and pieced out to their wall street buds!!
And, yes if there is no operating budget promulgated by March 4th, not only will social security receipients be relieved of their rightful payments, so will veterans and many other government workers.
