I had a cat die in my arms today, it was the hardest thing I've ever done.

I did the hardest thing today, and being a pet owner, I know I'll have to do it again and again. My roommate took his cat to the vet today, and they told us that she was really sick. He didn't think she was, but in the end, it was confirmed as they put her to sleep. I went with him as moral support and to help him make this difficult decision, which was extremely hard for him to make. He wanted to take her home thinking that it wasn't anything serious. His cat was about 18 years old, dehydrated and anemic. This meant that she had some sort of liver problem and that her kidneys were failing her. To do blood work and other tests was going to cost him a lot of money, money that he doesn't have and can't afford to spend even if he did. This wasn't my cat, but I did help to make the ultimate decision, and that made it even harder on me. I know for sure that she wouldn't have survived any surgery, she would have needed her remaining teeth removed, but with her liver issues and her heart condition, some sort of myopathy, she wouldn't have made it through. When they sedated her, she started throwing up and twitching, that's when I knew for sure that she wasn't strong enough to survive. They gave her the needle to end her life and I held her in my arms. It was over almost immediately. While she wasn't my cat, I still felt the pain of having to put an animal to sleep forever, it certainly wasn't easy, it never would be. Knowing that, I know how hard it will be for me when my dog, and then my cat die. It will be even harder since they are my pets. She will be missed, but she certainly knows that she was loved and didn't die without loved ones around. She's gone to a better place and we all know it. RIP Scooby.

I know it's really hard, as I just went through a similar situation with my 20 year old cat. I've had her (a rescued cat)since she was 5, and the 15 years I had her she was a really sweet companion. I knew she was slowing down and showing her age. I built a little set of stairs so she could still get up on my bed, and stuff like that. Then about 4 months ago she started not being able to climb up into her litter box, and was starting to have accidents all over the place. My daughter, a vet, came up to visit and took her to her clinic. Turns out she had cancer real bad. It's hard to put them to sleep, but I'm sure she's no longer in pain anymore. (And she never whimpered or anything, and did not seem like she was in pain!) I cried so hard. A pet is just like a loyal friend, they've left footprints on our heart, and we miss them so much when it's their time to go. RIP Scooby, and also to Sweetie my sumo cat, she was huuuuuuuuge (but not fat!)

I have not been present when my pets have been put to sleep. My hubby did that for me. I have an old one who is failing. Maybe. The vet says he is a tough old cat. It makes us sad, but it is also hard to see them with prolonged suffering.

That must have been a very sad experience. I've had a few pets die but never in my arms but they were still heart breaking. Any end of life is heartbreaking. May she rest in peace.

I have had to get cats put to sleep as well as dogs and that was always due to old age as well as ill health.I had paid loads of money out no matter how much money i would and could have paid, there would have been no cure and she would have still been in pain.It is such an upset to have any pet put to sleep no matter what the reason.

I become extremely upset when one of my animals needs to be put to sleep. I could not tolerate being in the room at the final moments. I walk out of the room and leave it to the doctors to handle it.

It is just heartbreaking to see your pets die most especially if they had been with your for years. Your friend might be so sad. But Scooby is probably in peace now. The hard thing in this kind of situation is that when animals die of course you cant talk to to them and know what exactly they are feeling, we just had a certain connection with animals by way of touch and gestures. You can't asked them if they still like to stay or if they wanted to rest now. You can't ask them if you've done enough to make them happy and feel belong in your home and all that stuff.

losing a pet is often extreamly hard my 10 year old past away of natural causes just last week and it was extreamly hard one min he was fine the next he screamed and had a heart attack I'm glad I could be there for him when it happened as I'm often not home during the day and just happened to have switched shifts with someone. Even knowing that it was natural causes was hard still to see him go and i dread the day my 15 year old dog go's but all i can hope for is its quick and its painless as animals do have that one benefit over people they are not hooked up to machines and suffering for months or years. Its never an easy decision but often the animal will tell you when its there time to go in their own way
