I Hate Seeing Vases With No Flowers In Them!

I have four vases in total, 3 are matching and different shapes and sizes, the other one is a crystal vase I've had for years. However, I can't remember the last time flowers were in ANY of the vases! It was ages ago. Now, I DO like the vases without flowers in as they are nice to look at in their own right BUT they don't half look better with flowers IN them as that's what they're designed for. Or are they? You tell me! By the way, a local flower shop (rather like Interflora) would've charged John's mate £20 for some roses but on St Valentine's Day..when they were bought, he had to pay £60!! That's another reason why I never have any flowers. They're a rip off! Any suggestions for growing my own, bearing in mind I don't have a massive area in which to grow stuff.

Since you say you don't have much room to grow flowers, perhaps you should consider container gardening. If you have an outdoor space that is. Or perhaps window boxes? I think container gardens are great because you can move the containers around and change the look of things very easily.

We do have a raised flower-bed that runs alongside the wall between us and next door. I would have containers if we didn't have a shared shed on the other side of the yard as we can't knock it down, therefore creating more space. We've also got 2 recycling bags and a box plus general rubbish sacks in the yard which wind me up but there's not a lot I can do about them. We have to recycle and that's it lol. The flower-bed will look better when the warmer months come along. If I planted something now flowers would definitely spring up in the summer, preferably flowers to attract bees and butterflies.

Yeah I agree with you and I do not leave my bases out unless there will be flowers in them. It is amazing how triple the amount roses cost on Valentines and I can't imagine why since they were grown and taken care of in the same manner all year round. I suppose it has to do with the demand for them on this special day, but shame right, as my thinking is how unfair. Rose required a lot of sunlight, and good climate. I use to have 32 bushes, when I owned my home, and so love them. I fed them once a month with rose food and watered them daily. Unfortunately here we only have them for 2 - 3 months out of the year, because of the harsh winters. But that was about the only time my vases were filled daily.

That's ok, I knew what you meant. I suppose I could sell 'em on Ebay, although I'd be a bit miffed if my crystal one went for peanuts, not that I REALLY want to sell that one, to be honest. The last time I had a load of flowers in it was when the vase was at Mum's and John sent me some. Goodness me, they were AMAZING! A load were in bud so they took their time to come out, so I had that bouquet for about 3 weeks...seriously! The lilies had what I would call a "heady" scent! There were other flowers in there as well, plus all the decorative stuff. Not had any since!

Hey just wanted to come back and thank you!! After your bike on Ebay discussion, I went to Ebay to play with that to see if I could possibly earn some thing for maybe a few things that I no longer want, plus I could use the money. So I listed these two ink tanks that wouldn't you know that after I ordered them the printer went to the garbage. So I would not have any use of them They cost me almost $40 bucks. So I put them there and Huh, I got a winner made sure I lost because no one is going to buy them for full price, But I got $26 bucks. $26 bucks I would not have seen as I was about to pitch the new tanks, and loose out completely. So thanks my friend, now I may want to sell everything. LOL

You could get some silk or dried flowers for your vases...

I do not believe in flowers in vases. Sure they look nice and all that, but they die too quickly and are way too expensive. Particularly at those ties like Mothers Day and Valentines Day. I prefer to buy a plant instead of flowers, then just stick it in the garden or a pot if you do not have much room. Then it will flower every year, providing it stays alive. If you get a whole range of plants that flower at different times, then you have flowers year round for less than the cost of buying cut flowers. I am not sure what will flower year round in your climate. You might need some sort of a sun room or something?

I agree with you about Valentine's Day, etc. So many people fall into the trap of buying flowers on those particular days and it's all getting a bit silly, really. As for a sun room..well, it's a lovely idea but space is limited if I'm being honest. There will be some daffodils coming up soon in my flower bed plus my Hot Lips later on in the season! I guess I'm being a bit impatient to see them come up. Some leaves are sprouting on other plants though, which proves it's slowly warming up outside.

"Home maker, house wife, home minister....etc" are the names for a women in general. And yes, the home maker is seeing her home always very neat and lightening. Home is the her temple. Kitchen is her main office room. Really the house wives are seeing their kitchen as so important one, they like to allow any others into their kitchen to do cook.

If I dont have flowers to put in the vase I usually store them away. But these vases can be decorative in their own too, just put them somewhere e.g in between picture frames or as a table centerpiece and it's good to go. Another suggestion would be put some decorative stones inside the vase. Like the stones that they use to put in aquariums, this will add color to it. I know you like flowers but my advice is okay for you, flowers can really be expensive at times :)

Decorative stones, how interesting! Three of my vases are ceramic so I wouldn't see the stones but my crystal one is clear of course..so anything glittery..like shiny stones or coloured sand..wow...you've got me thinking now!!

Yeah, it'll work on clear vases. Give it a try, you'll see how beautiful these vases can become.

Try making some, or getting silk ones, they never die and you can change them out.

"Try" to make some being the operative word with me. I'm hopeless at making things. However, my astrology forecast for the year says I may surprise myself if I decide to do something "creative!" Thanks for the suggestion.

I have some lovely vases, I have 2 matching orange ones which are on my kitchen windowsill and have wooden roses in and look lovely, the others I keep out the way until I happen to get some flowers (very rarely), must admit though on valentines day I bought myself some tulips (my fav flower) as me and hubby weren't gona do pressies and then he got me some as well. He only ever gets me flowers from asda and tesco and places which still do the job and make it look pretty! Grow things like daffs and sweetpeas smell LOVELY. Plus the daffs come up every year . . bonus! Good luck :-)

An empty vs is simply just an empty vase. it might be designed with pretty artwork but that that is all the beauty an empty vase can have. Once that epty vase is filled with the beauty of flowers, then the vase can become a work of art. An empty vase is only enjoyed by its owner. A vase of flowers can be enjoyed by the world.

Wow, what a great response, thanks! You are sooo right my friend! When Mum was here over weekend I ordered two prints for her on her behalf..and both featured bouquets of flowers in vases. They were awesome!

Yeah it doesn't really bother me all that much. However, I can really see how odd that might seem to a lot of people. It does look a lot strange to say the very least. It is just like when people have shelves just for the sake of having shelves. There is really nothing on them. It just seems like it is taking up space for space's sake. Still everyone is going to live their life the way they are going to live their life. And that is just the way things are going to. So if they are going to put flowers in a vase, then they will. Of course, some people just tend to collect vases for some odd reason. Then again, there are many things that I might collect that could seem a bit odd. So it is all subjective. Still I do see why it would in fact seem odd.

I did find a good place for 3 of my vases. They are on the windowsill in the kitchen and do cheer me up in a strange way, even without flowers in them. The one on the telly though bugs me because it doesn't look right on the old-fashioned box.

I don't have any vases I keep out. They're not as pretty as the ones you mentioned. I really would consider silk flowers. They're kind of expensive, but then you're not having to replace them but every few years. I like cut flowers, but they're just too expensive. I would never have paid 60 for roses, even if I loved the person a lot...

Needless to say, this guy was wound up something chronic by his workmates. He could've bought them on the Saturday but chose not to. Valentine's Day is such a rip-off, I'm glad we don't bother with it, to be honest!

I might take a look online to see if there are cheap flowers to be had. Photography on such sites has improved enormously, as it has on other sites too such as art. I could spend all day on Easyart!

When I dont have flowers for the vases, I wrap them up in newspaper and put them away somewhere. I like to have floerws in the house but I don't feel like buying fresh flowers regularly. Recently, I bought two little primrose, they were 2 dollars each, the flowers just keeps coming back and the colors are very bright, it is very nice. I think you can try that, all it takes is just a little pot + full moistured dirt + full sun.

Yes, I have thought about buying a house plant. I do have a "money plant" and it's doing OK on the windowsill in the kitchen..and I've been quite lucky with money lately too, so I'm not going to bin it anytime soon - despite it coming from the MIL!

I dont keep all the flower vases out. When i buy flowers or someone brings me some as a gift and i bring them home then that is when a vase come sout from under a kitchen cabinet and then i use it. Having them out just for a look is ok but you will need to at least put some fake flowers in them so it doesnt like silly sitting there with nothing in it. Of course this is my opinion but do as you want. Fake flowers are pretty cheap and as leat you dont have to keep getting new ones as real ones always die and fake ones dont.

I have 3 of the vases in the kitchen as it's light in there and they are different sizes. They cheer me up whenever I wash up lol. They'd cheer me up even more if there were flowers in them but I shall give your suggestion about fake flowers some serious thought. Thanks!
