Apartheid. Unbelievable? How was it allowed to happen?

I'm just listeneing to a documentary on BBC World Service about Aparteid in the 50's. It's just unbelievable, I've heard of it but I've never been taught about it. I can't believe it was allowed to happen and happen for so long. Some of the interviews from the 50's are just plain racist. It's embarassing to listen too, but these guys genuinly believed that they were superior the the native South Africans. Why was Apartheid allowed to happen? Was it just for money? Why didn't other countries get involved and put a stop to it? If was a Native South Africian I like to think that I would have repressed against this movement, but who knows.
