Follow it to the letter and it wont work.

I had a chocolate chips cookies Ive been wanting to bake for at least 6 months. Every time Id take out the recipe, Id start doing something else and then I wouldnt have enough time to bake the cookies.
So last night I decided that nothing would prevent me from baking the cookies right then and there. Its quite easy to make and as soon as they were spooned on the cookie sheet, the recipe said to leave them only FIVE minutes in the oven. Ok I thought, but Im not sure they'll be cooked but they "insisted" in the recipe to not be tempted to leave them longer than FIVE minutes. So after five minutes, I took them out and then they said to leave them sitting there for 3 minutes. I waited thinking they would magically finish cooking by themselves lol.
They didnt and turns out I had to put them back in the oven for an additional TEN minutes.
Have you ever had recipes that were wrong before and did you manage to save the day or did it ruin the whole thing for you?

The only cookie I know of that goes something like that is a meringue cookie, but you leave it in the oven. With your chocolate chip cookies I would have left them until the edges were just barely getting brown.

This is exactly what I did, waited for the edges to get brown and the whole cookie changed color also. I knew they were done........after over 15 mins!!
I never made meringue cookies but it might be something I'll try.
Thanks!

I usually follow the instructions but usually when it comes to putting them in the oven i will put them in for maybe 5 minutes and check them and then figure out how much longer from there i need to cook them only because usually the instructiolns on receipies are not right and you might have a conventional oven and not just a oven and some of the newer ovens like mine cook faster than older ones at least that is what i believe. Keeping the light on in the oven aslo help sme out too so i can see them processing.

I know it always depends on the type of oven, the flour and so many things. But the recipe did say "NO MORE THAN 5 mins" It said, even if you feel the urge to, DONT!
I sent them an email, who wants to eat raw cookies when they are supposed to be cooked.
Luckily I cooked them for much longer and they turned out delicious!
Thanks!

This usually happens to me with Jiffy Cornbread for some reason I always have to cook it for about 35 minutes despite the fact that I set the temperature exactly as it says on the box, and I set a time for the prescribed amount of time...

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. Ive never tried those cookies but I knwo that mine take more time to cook. I think it has to do with our ovens or where we live maybe......who knows lol.
Thanks for sharing!!

I have a very good chocolate chip cookies recipe. When I made it the first time, I overcooked it for only 1 minute, it came out so rock hard when it sits for a while. So the next time when I cook it, I adjust the time and it is very good cookie. I only ate a little bit of that tray of cookie because it was really too hard...

I know what you mean. Ive done that before also and the only way I could eat the cookies was in ice cream. Dont throw them out, use them with ice cream and they'll soften.
Thanks for sharing and maybe you could share your chocolate chips cookie recipe??

It could be the quality of the ingredients you are using or the manner in which you are mixing. Don't give up hope. One day i am sure your cooking will be spectacular and you will forget you ever wrote this post!

Haha, thanks for saying that. I dont let it get to me. I owned a restaurant and I know my cooking is great. Its just that it makes me angry to find recipes like this. We all know we cant cook a cookie in 5 minutes!!
I know i'll forget all about this post in a few weeks!!
Thanks!

I have been cooking a long time, and because of that whenever I run across a recipe
that is wrong I can usually fix it. But I can't remember very many times that this has happened. Of course the problem with the above instrucitons was not everyone's oven has the same temp. there is often a variation in this. Cooks that use their ovens often adjust for this but others who only bake once in a while have a more difficult time. Glad they turned out well anyway.

I made sure to write the time on the recipe so I dont go through this again. You're right, we do forget when we do the same recipe again!!
I have a new stove and I cant get used to the oven .....yet after 2 yrs. They dont make stoves the way they used to!!
Thank you!

I've had those days but I try not to let it get to me. Sometimes if I have cookies that go south I use them for toppings over ice cream (not that I can do that now lol, diet here, but in the past I've done that). Another thing to do if they are not cooking up right is to press them into a pan and just make bars. Those can be very yummy.

I managed to get them to cook right but it makes me angry that they can make such mistakes in recipes. My sister made them last night and she too had to cook them for 15 minutes and NOT 5 minutes as the recipe said. SO to the recipe owner. Ive actually sent them an email to let them know their recipe was wrong.
Thanks for sharing and thumbs up on your diet!!

I´m an old cook now so those recipes don´t fool me anymore. There´s no posibility that something made of dough will get cooked in 5 min. I also have the oven at medium even when it said high for cakes and cookies. They get burned easily otherwise. I also prefer a medium oven to roast meat. I place them in the oven for a longer time but don´t burn my food.
I´m sorry you had such a bad experience with chocolate chip cookies. When I make them, I start imagining myself eating them even before I finish spooning them on the cookie sheet. I use the "Joy of cooking" recipe and it is always a wonder.

I thought the same too. How can cookies be cooked in 5 mins. Thats why I kept my eye on them and then I knew they had to go back in the oven.
Im eating them now, they turned out great after cooking them at least 15 mins.
I'll have a look at "Joy of Cooking"
Thanks for sharing, you're right, we need to use our experience in the kitchen.
