Another Gossip Story

I recently accepted an offer at freelancer.com. The deal was great. It was about graphicis design. I'm currently running out of disk space on my hard drive so I had to fetch my old, external one from a friend. When I got there, all of my friends were there and they were drinking on a sunny 3pm just this Tuesday. My friend, Gatong, the one who had the hard drive and who owns the place, invited me in for a round of drinks. I said I couldn't because I had to do a lot of stuff and would be happy to have my hard drive. Out of the blue, Gatong just blurted out that he's being destroyed by gossips. Upon hearing this, I just sat down with the rest of the gang and pulled myself a bottle. I asked him "Why, what's up?" My other friends were laughing. Then Gatong told me that someone bad-mouthed him in the workplace. He said that someone told everyone of his colleagues that he slept with his gay supervisor. Then everyone bursted out laughing.
The drinking session was fun, no doubt, but, to be frank, I don't appreciate being bad-mouthed anywhere, not just in the workplace. I have been gossiped upon in the workplace, actually, and it didn't feel good. I mean, what is wrong with these people? They start a rumor, and when they're already busted they still fight for their lies? And worse, with another LIE. I never liked hearing, let alone, spreading rumors but these people take this to the next level.
What do you think about these people who spreads lies and then back themselves up with another lie just to prove that they're right? Aren't you supposed to admit your lies when you've already been busted?
