Why do people do this on ebay?

Hey all
I have been spending a lot of time on ebay recently, as i am looking to buy both a pair of foam nunchucks, and a silent scope rifle for me xbox.
Anyway, what i will discuss is what i have seen so many times whislt looking for foam nunchucks.
On ebay, there is a online seller who obviously owns or has connections with a factory that makes the foam nunchucks. They sell the foam nunchucks BRAND NEW for around £5-£6. I am currently waiting for my cashout on here to pay for a pair!
Anyway, i have around £4.33 or so in my paypal, so i looked at used examples. There were a pair that were going for £4. So i bid all my £4.33 on them. But i got outbid, and want to know how much is sold for in the end including postage and package? £8.00!
Now i know that the £5 were from china or somewhere, but these used ones, the seller didnt give a brand, make or anything, so they could have been from anywhere as well, all that was in the description was "in good condition".
But i have seen this happen so many times on ebay. People bid more than what the item is actually worth! I mean, why spend an extra £3 on something that is pretty similar, and with the brand new one, it came with a cash back guarrantee, and a seller rating of over 90%?
I dont understand some people...

Hello fpsninja,
At the beginning of Ebay I was following my auctions until the last minute, and I did that two or three times when there was one or more bidders online at the end. I am never doing this in an auction room, though in an auction room I generally buy useless items when they are very cheap. There is a technical term in French to qualify a bidder that cannot pay -- it is the worse case that you can imagine --, it is called a "fool bid". In an auction room, and maybe more online, you can be foolish and pay things more than their price : it is well known. I know myself well and I give now my maximum price on Ebay a few hours before the end of the auction.

What i tend to do is just when i see an item i want, just bid how much i want to pay for it as a maximum. But i have never won anything, i think i may be bidding way to early. I think from now on i will try your idea, if it seems to be working. Thanks for the response
