Well for those of you who do not know, Junia is a stray that we believed was sent to us by our beloved cat Junior who passed away in October. Two hours after his passing Junia came to our gallery and I opened the door and she walked right in.
She is in heat and keeps us up all night long with her really loud howling. This is her third heat.
I wrote in my last discussion that she was going to get vaccination within a week and then she was going to be spayed.
I got all kinds of comments about looking around to get a cheep vet or help with vet costs.
I would love to thank everyone and I would also like everyone to know that I am a professional researcher, I do it for my writing and I research my own life issues as well.
I thoroughly researched the vets here on the island of montreal, where I lived they are very very expensive.
I am going to a vet across the bridge on the mainland. We don't have a car so I have to get someone with a car to drive us.
But the prices are better than anywhere else.
The spaying of a female cat in Montreal is 160.00, at this veterinary clinic costs the spaying cost 84.00.
The reason that it cost less, is that the clinic is run by the head veterinarian in Montreal, he is the head of the University of Montreal veterinarian school. So he uses his students at the clinic, of course he is there to oversee any problems etc.
So my question to you is,
Do you use the closest vet in your area for your animals,
Do you go by reputation and pay any cost because the reputation of the vet is most important
Or do you shop around for the best prices

The vet we are currently using is more of a tradition then anything else. My husband took his dog to them before we were married, That dog passed away shortly before we got married, when we got our first dog as a married couple we just brought her to the same vet, and so when our first dog had to be put down and we finally got the dog we have now we just took her there too, we also took the old stray cat we took in there too for the short time we had him. It is just nice because they know our family and seem to really have a love the animals, and they also have a 24 hour emergency hours. To me it is more about how loving and concerned the see to be for our pets. So far the expense while not always easy has not been a reason for going or not going there. However, with my husband about to lose his job that could change, although I would really hate that, but if I have to find a cheaper vet temporarily then I guess I will have to. Our current one will let us pay in 4 installments if we have to, but I have never gotten out of there for less than $300.00.

yep good vet is important, that is good that you can pay in 4 installments, I looked all over the place to find a vet that would take payments and they just won't do it here in Montreal. 300 dollars though every time you go ouch!

My vet takes payments but does not have emergency hours. The one time I needed an emergency vet it was very expensive, and they did not take payments and of course we were in a pinch at that time for money. It seems to happen all too often that my pets get ill during the state fair, and my vet is usually gone, because she shows horses.

I am also a professional researcher and do so for my writing. I have found that our humane society here locally does the spaying and neutering of animals where they are purchased (that sounded weird) or not. Don't remember how much but even less that would you mentioned here. Glad to hear you found someone close and reasonably. Happy days! Take care.

montreal is very expensive actually canada is more expensive in most things. Our human society only spays or neuters animals they have in their shelter, you can come in with an outside animal and have it done, or at least that was what I was told the last time I inquired. It is losing money as it is and would not give good prices because of it.

I had to find a new vet when we moved here almost four years ago now. I chose one close to us, mainly because it was so convenient. The first animal I took there was the stray who moved in with us and he got terrific treatment. I thought the prices were a bit high but the care was magnificent so I kept them as our vets. This is a clinic with several doctors and we see whomever is available next.
Unfortunately, I just had a bad experience there, where they cost me over $100 extra by prescribing my dog the wrong thing for an eye problem she was having. They put her on steroid eye drops initially for two weeks. When that didn't fix the problem, they told me to keep her on them for another month, then they'd check her again. A month went by and her eye was no better.
The next vet we saw (now the third one we had seen for the same problem) prescribed antibiotic eye drops and, within two weeks, her eye was totally better. I was pretty angry that it took them so long to put her on antibiotics because her eye was red and she was keeping it closed like it hurt. They should have started her on antibotics right away, if you ask me.
So, I'll be going to another vet the next time one of my babies has to go. I'm asking around now to see if there is one particular vet that our neighbors go to. If not, I'll just keep trying until I find the right one, no matter how far away they are.
I used to drive pretty far to a vet because they were exceptional in their care (and caring) and also their costs were not that high. It was a 24-hour shock-trauma hospital as well which came in handy a few times!
I'd go the extra mile to get the best treatment, as long as it wasn't outrageously priced.

I don't blame you I would do the same. IMagine not knowing the meds were no good for the dog, what kind of animal doctor is that.

When we got our first house cat, we shopped around, considering price and proximity to our house. After that, we have gone to the same fer (actually it is a husband/wife team) for everything related to our animals. I feel that it is the same as looking for a doctor for human members of our family. They not only know our animals, they have all their records. In your case, though, I'd go to the mainland. I'd inspect the operating room at the clinic before turning over my animal. Several years ago (close to 30) when I went to pick up my female cat up after an operation, I was shocked to find her lying on a newspaper on the floor. She was non the worse for the experience, but I didn't go back to that clinic.

oh this place is the best, the vet is the head vet in this part of Quebec, and he is the senior professor at the university of montreal for veterinary sciences. His reputation precedes him. We have used him before, for our cat rugby, he is my regular vet.

I do not remember how I chose my vet. She has been my vet for well over twenty five years. She happens to be the least expensive vet around as well. The only vet I had before her I chose because he was highly recommended. That was actually before this vet came on the scene. I guess there was a time when he was not available and I used this one. I found her to be compassionate, and economical. It has been many years since I have had a cat spayed or neutered, five or six at least, and I think that it was under fifty dollars.

that is great you have the best of both worlds, great vet and cheep, that is exactly what I have, but prices in montreal are outrageous that is why I have to go to over the bridge to the mainland to get the vet that I have.

Personally I have never taken on the responsibility of any animal I was not able to afford. I have seen too many animals abused and goodness knows what.
I know that being a professional researcher as well as a cat lover you are well aware of the importance of spaying animals. I have been told that if cats aren't spayed and they suffer the "heat" it can cause medical problems, now I'm no vet but this is just what I was told and we were also told that with our little Maltese puppy. We had her spayed before her first heat and there was never any problems. Around here you have to pay up front and if you can't afford to do so then they basically tell you too bad. I know of one lady who was in the same situation or very close to the same situation and she asked for credit for half the cost, she was willing to pay half and she was told if she couldn't afford pets then don't have them. Our world is tough these days Right? Good luck with kitty.

yep it is a responsibility and Junia is a stray but our cat now. The doctor scheduled the spaying for March 22 because she is in heat, nothing I could have prevented, we got her when we got her. She had her vaccination and heartworm, flea and all that other treatment yesterday as well.

I live in a big, activist city and I've managed to get 4 cats fixed for free! Granted, the girls ended up costing $39, $3 each for the dissolving stitches and then the 2 older ones had infections they needed antibiotics for. But Sparky was totally free!
I also go to a low cost vet who, while they aren't the closest, they are one of the least expensive in town - so low they don't take new (human) clients. Why are they so low cost? Well, the building they are in was built by barter, they are old hippy types, both graduated in the mid-1970's so their student loans were lower and are now paid off, and the land they are on was donated by the original vet who started the clinic.
There are a couple of spay/neuter clinics in Austin and I've had all of my cats altered at either one of them or at my vets.
I will say that they can't do EVERYTHING, and I have to go to a different, very much more expensive clinic to have things like the teeth pulling done. Now, there I go because I know the vet. I've known her since she was a small child in fact!

i no longer use the closest vet to me which is a 20min drive as i have had bad experiences with them in the past from everything from refusing to allow me to see my cat while he was on IV fluid, them not realizing my cat had crystals and leaving him howling for 3 days in there care and telling me i shouldn't have bottle fed my one kitten (who i raised kept and neutered) because there are to man cats in the world and he should of been killed. I have also tried shopping around for cheaper vets in the past and had nothing but bad luck from them missing obvious things forgetting to check heart rate, miss diagnosing my dog and doing the wrong surgery on my other dog. I have found a vet i finally trust who is a little more then most but still in the average range. they go above and beyond and know all m animals by name as well as do amazing follow up with them and if i have problems or questions after surgeries they check out the animals again and answer all questions for free. they are available 24/h with an emergancy pager which can be a life safer when your cat eats your dogs heart meds at 11pm at night. I don't believe cost is everything when looking for vet its the same as a doctor it has to be someone you trust wont milk you for every penny or give you false hope and that you trust with the life or your pet 100%

what awful vets you had in the past, I am glad you have a good vet now, my vet has a file on each animal with their names, and takes good care of them, I am lucky to have found him.
