A new and very bizarre eating disorder

Have any of you ever heard of an eating disorder called PICA. It's the disorder you may have seen about on the TLC television program "My strange addiction". In this disorder, people will crave, and literally EAT very non nutritional items. On the Dr Oz television program today, he talked with a girl who eats BABYPOWDER and another girl who eats rocks, chalk, dirt, soap. The truly frightening thing about that discussion was the fact that the girl with the list of things she eats, really didn't see that she had a problem. Can you imagine the damage that eating ROCKS would do to your body? Just makes you realize that we all find different ways to cope with issues and different problems may arise from those coping mechanisms.

I realize that debra...but it also brings to mind the psychological aspects of it, as are involved with many other eating disorders.

That's very weird. I must've missed that episode! I generally like watching any kind of coverage of eating disorders (as I was bulimic for a large portion of my adolescence.....) but this is one that I don't get. Although, to be honest and fair here, I knew a couple of anorexics who would attempt to eat PAPER TOWEL and NAPKINS because the items contained no calories (they couldn't be digested!). People with eating disorders do a lot of harm to their bodies and MINDS..But this one just seems crazy. It must be a very very small percentage of people who suffer from this, as it just doesn't make SENSE. There's something very very irrational and illogical about this whole thing.

Yes they do harm their bodies and minds as well and I just want to congratulate you on your recovery. I know it has to be a struggle and I admire your courage.

I've actually seen that show on TLC. Sometimes I really can't watch it, it grosses me out. I really wonder how some of those addictions truly start because some of the are definitely crazy and I don't understand how they can eat those things with the taste of it! ick!

I know EXACTLY what you mean. I had to leave the room this morning cuz the girl eating the rocks just gagged me. I think by far though one of the worst one's I've seen on the TLC show, was the lady who ate TOILET PAPER. way too gross for me...icky!

I saw that! I ahd seen not long ago where a lady was eating comet. That's just nasty. What would even make you taste it to start with? and then what would make it taste good to anyone? I'd say that it's a really crazy addiction for sure.. maybe it's for the attention. But it's definitely crazy!

I saw the one with the comet also. The one where she's eating TOILET PAPER, still floors me. i agree with you too, though, what on earth would make you even WANT to taste a rock for example?

hi speechteacher,
I was stunned on how some could actually live eating weird stuff such as chalks and toilet paper. It was scary. Before I got to see a documentary in India where this girl is addicted in eating her own hair. I was shocked that the doctor needs to remove a huge ball of hair inside her stomach and it was occupying her own stomach. That was frightening and I feel sorry for them.

I feel sorry for them also..especially when a child gets afflicted with this condition. I can't imagine what eating some of these items does to a person's body, but I sure don't wanna find out either.

I didn't know that it was an eating disorder. A year ago, specifically last summer, I was fond of eating ice cubes. There wasn't a time when I didn't munch on ice cube. Anything I do, I always have it on my side, either a glassful or a bowl full of ice cubes. I even forgot eating my meals. It was so hot during that time and even taking a bath for long hours can't refresh me so I found my self munching ice cubes most of the time. It was when I noticed that my blood pressure went way blow the normal level and I had frequent headaches. It was my doctor who told me that it was due to my eating non-nutritious food, that is, the ice cubes. So to correct this habit, my family remove the ice-cube canister inside the freezer and refrain me from eating that and eat nutritious fruits instead. So that's what they call it, pica!

Yep, that's what they call it. And on the television show i mentioned (Dr Oz), they even made mention about being fond of eating ice.
