Well, tonight we did something a little different. I had my daughter fry up a pound of hamburger and put it in the rice cooker with some sliced carrots and some brown rice. Bam! It cooked up lovely! We dished it up and seasoned it with butter, Johnny's Seasoning Salt and Louisiana Hot Sauce. I also added some mozzarella to one bowlful (would have added it to all the rice but I ran out). Talk about heaven! I was moaning in ecstasy so much my daughter decided maybe she was hungry after all. She tried it and kyped my last bowlful from me!
I just loved the simplicity of the dish, yet it was a complete meal. Don't you just love finding new ways to use your rice cooker?

Looks like you discovered for your self your very own version of rice toppings, rice toppings is a favorite meal here in our country, it's readily available in the malls especially if your in a hurry and want something fast, here the rice is already cooked and you put the toppings on top and like bake it or heat it, sometimes it's served on sizzling plates, wow brown rice! very nutritious

I find that I prefer the nutty flavor and firmer texture of the brown rice to the white. Plus it's better for you with all the natural fiber intact.
I used to use bulgur wheat in place of rice for a lot of my dishes but lately I have been unable to find it in the local store. I miss it a lot I love my bulgur. It works for any dish that I would use rice for and has all the fiber I need, as well.

yeah bulgur, I don't find much around here either, years ago our department of social welfare distributed bulgur for under nourished kids and they come by the sack loads, remember soaking that stuff overnight and turning it into omelet

We had rice also. Under salsa children. The chicken was suculent and juicy. She has becomequite a cook. Rice is a good dish isn't it? So many options. SO was the hamburger good with brown rice? Must have been if he kyped the last bowl from you. And the carrots make it sweet. SOunds good!

I only wish I had thought to add peas, too. Next time. I like to get creative and add different things to my dishes like onions, peppers, celery...you name it. YUMMY!!! I don't make many dishes that the Louisiana Hot Sauce would work well with but this one was perfect!

Well you learn something eveyday, I thought rice cookers were just for rice...I have a small one and it didn't come with a book of recipes, I certainly wouldn't have thought you could cook meat in it...amazing.

Check out my other discussions about the rice cooker. I use it for roasts, steaks, you name it. And, of course, rice always turns out great in it.
I can lose my crock pot but don't touch my rice cooker!

I don't have a rice cooker. We don't eat it enough, I'd say once a week. Plus I don't have much storage space and it would just be another counter top appliance I don't have anywhere to put. But you dish sounds fine a nice basic meal is always good to make or one that is expandable with what you have on hand.

I much prefer my rice cooker to cooking my rice on the stove, and I use it all the time anymore since I discovered I could use it for things other than rice. I make a nice swiss steak in my rice cooker and prepare my picadillo for nachos in it. It uses much less electricity than the range and is so handy and easy to clean!
Mine was a gift from a coworker but if she hadn't given it to me, I would have bought one. The rice turns out perfect and I don't have to worry about watching it...just throw it in and walk away. I can put it on the dinner table, too, so that I don't have to carry the food from the stove.
Everything else I cook in it(other than the rice) turns out perfect, as well. The meat and veggies are tender.
The only thing I can think to compare it to is a pressure cooker, which everyone in the 60s and 70s were all agog over because it cooked things so fast. I actually don't eat rice that much, either...not even once a week...but I use my rice cooker at least that often. Much more often than I use my crock pot!

When I got married, we barely had appliances in our small apartment. But we had a very versatile rice cooker where we could fry or poach eggs, steam or cook dimsum, hotdogs and sausages, cook up some beef or pork stew dishes and even warm our leftovers :)

Aren't they just marvelous little appliances? You may not have a stove, even, but if you have a rice cooker you can cook!

Yep. I just threw everything in the rice cooker and walked away. I put about 1/2 cup more water than needed for the rice so that the veggies got cooked. Once it's cooked I like to use butter and Johnny's Seasoning Salt to season it.
