Hi myLot communities, I would like to get myself a Siberian Husky or Alaskan Malamute. The thing is, I am living in tropical country (Singapore) and from rumors that I heard, both dogs are sub-tropical type (must always stay under cold climate). Anyone can give insight if they own either one as well as recommending which one is better? Thank you!

Both of these dogs are big working dogs. We live in Texas and had one that was a mix of both and had to shave him in the summer so he would not be too hot. I can't imagine one in a tropical climate. They have extra thick fur for the warmth in frozen climates, and the humidity and heat would be hard on them.

Hi UnicornDancer, thank you for responding to my discussion. One thing I want to ask, will shaving these types of dogs help in their adapting to tropical climate? Well since tropical climate is not as hot as summer in sub-tropical areas and not as cold as the spring or fall either, but I suppose shaving down the fur will make them look uglier? I have never seen one shaved anyways, thanks for the information. It would be kind enough for me if you can upload an image or find an online image that shows how a fur-shaved Siberian Huskie would look like.

We owned a husky. They require cooler temperatures along with the Alaskan Malamute. I believe tropical weather will be too hot for them and could cause distress. Both dogs are strong and can break regular chains without trying. Our husky was chained to his wooden doghouse and dragged it down the street. Both dogs are made to work in cold climates. only1fushia

Hi only1fushia, thank you for responding to my discussion. What an amazing strength that they could even break regular chains! But I thought both these dogs are very calm, mature (will not easily bark at people), as well as uncomplicated when being trained? At least that was what I have read in some dog magazines. Thanks for the info anyway!

hi diditzzz, I am also came from a tropical country today those kinds of breeds can adopt new climate but it depends on how they are going to adopt it Siberian Husky here is really quite expensive plus the fact that this kind of breed is high maintenance at least you will bath them 4 times a week especially during summers or the heat temperature is not good to avoid heat stroke i am not familiar with Alaskan Malamute maybe they are both came from cold places and need a high maintenance too. happy mylotting

Hi bhabycatch013, thank you for responding to my discussion. My friend said there are breeds of Siberian Huskie that could adapt to tropical climate, in which these types have a slightly different genes. Some even claimed that you can feel the difference between cold-based Siberian Huskie and tropical-based one just by rubbing on the fur. Although bathing at least 4 times a week is a new information for me, and I just knew that they could get heat stroke :O
