Needing to temper myself with bank policies!

At the bank, I was shocked to hear a real lovely lady castigating two tellers for a check which, for whatever reason, they could not register in her account. And the tellers were saying that she even needs a notarized affidavit from the owner of that check. Banking and finance will forever be Greek to me so I will not dwell on that. What I was more interested in was the way the tellers gave their banking policies, making it look as if there is something anomalous in the transaction and they couldn't do anything but abide by the bank laws and say I'm sorry, ma'm! The young lady left angry, trying to act dignified after losing her temper... I sympathized with the lady because I also get irritated by simple things that make me look as if I am about to rob a bank. Just last night, I called my bank to verify my account. I simply wanted to know how much my balance was because when I paid my groceries via express payment, I thought the balance was much lower than it was supposed to be. So the bank operator asked for my data, including the last time I deposited credit. But when I asked how much exactly do I have left, he said he could not disclose that, that I have to give an amount and the only thing he can say is whether the amount is lower or higher than the amount I mentioned. I really got angry because that was why I called, I didn't know how much my money was...And all he said was I'm sorry, ma'm, I understand how you feel but that is our policy. I really need to temper myself when it comes to policies that seem bent to pin me on the wall. Sorry for the nasty blog, guys, I need to vent my anger!

Hiya Eileen, Now there is one that takes after me. Banking will be forever Greek to me as well (grin). I often did that ask them how much there was if I phoned the Bank in Madrid and they are really awful don´t think that it is limited just to your place it´s all over the World. Banks are fast becoming somewhat hostile in their treatment of People. Here since the crisis crunch People are much more unfriendly than what they used to be. I always pay Cash for our Food I find I have more control over what is going on and I prefer it. When we pay other People they often don´t bother to check their Accounts so we pay them in cash now if we can. You are telling the truth here it´s not a nasty blog we all need to say things like this sometimes.

Hi angel, I always ran out of cash. I don't carry much money for security purposes. But when I get to the mall, I sometimes need to buy bread and cheese and eggs, and some supplies, so I resort to the express payment. I limit my relationships with banks, especially now that we know they really cannot guarantee the safety of our hard earned money!

Hiya eileen, That´s right you can run out of cash but even so I used to carry to work with me two separate purses one with Money I was not going to spend and the other to spend. That way I always had enough to fall back on and not have to use Credit Cards either. A spare bit of cash that you mean to have as savings or short term savings is a God send because you put it into the part of your Handbag that you forget about most times and then if it comes to the crunch you can use that sparingly of course. (grin). Let´s just say I am not in love with our Bank either reasons are others.

everyone these days have access to our bank accounts except us. Banks make it appear that they're protecting the account holder's privacy but that just it, it ends there. Banks now outsource their call centers to BPO so any call center agent can have access to our accounts except the account holders themselves.

This is alarming! Is this the reason why I had been receiving so many calls from all sorts of insurance and city banking offers? I'll be damned!

I might have to disagree with this.. your claims are quite alarming, and not quite true for all. I work in a bank as an Auditor, and I know for a fact that we do not outsource our call center, we have our own unit that handles it, and before you can be employed as an agent, you go through a lot of hard training and weekly exam before you can be sent to the field to do calls. Also, we take client's personal and account information confidentiality very seriously.. you don't know how much policies, audit checking, and investigations that we have done just to make sure that client information are safe... Our reputation is our life, so I know that banks will not do anything to ruin their reputation.. because once the public sees you as an unsafe bank, then you can definitely bid your whole business goodbye...

the bank is so evil - that they tend to let us be blind folded
Hello Eileen, I guess for now, i should stick with UNION BANK instead of other banking institutions. well, with all of these frauds that has been happening, they really can't afford to get caught off guard since banks tend to be part of a corrupt persons transactions. and they are only notified if theres' a criminal investigation into it.. even to those who called reminding my siblings to pay for the credit card bills won't even bother telling me how much they owe

hi eileen, Oh my..! that was insane. I find it more frustrating to wait hours and hours just to make a single transaction. I just hate waiting long hours with pile of people waiting inline. I am just wondering how will you be able to know your balances if they themselves don't let you know it. It is a bit weird. It is a waste of time and I think as long as you are the card holder you have the right to get that information. Geez! Hehe..

Precisely. I am the cardholder. They had asked all the details abou me, including my middle name, my birh date, and so on, and they still think I am fraudulent!

It is understood. It actually happen with my bank too. The last time I went to ATM to withdrew some money, and the computer system automatically block my usage due to some irregularities on my activities. I understood their system just trying to protect me and my finance. When I call this 1 - 800 number, the operator also ask my information, like how much my last deposit was. It was bit hassle, but they did try to protect my benefit though, you have to understand this.

My most disgusting experience with bank tellers is when I was applying for a savings account with a bank that operates even on Saturdays. When I submitted my application I initially deposited cash and a check, it so happen that the amount of the check is quite bigger than the cash, I've got irritated when the teller ask me what's my real intention of applying for a savings account, she says "Are you applying a savings account with us just to encash this check?" I immediately said in reply "Of course not, I'm here to open a savings account for my monthly savings." Luckily I was able to hold my temper at that moment.

Winnie, if that situation happens to me, I would be talking with the manager already. That teller will be out of his job faster than you open your account. I am not as kind as you. I do not tolerate foul language. I contend that no decent human being deserves insult, especially from one who is supposedly educated, like a bank teller. Hmmpf!

Hi Eileen, I do understand them being extra cautious in the case of checks as there have been many breakins lately and there is a rash of stolen checks. I recently caught 2 kids trying to pass stolen checks. It's happened a couple of times of the past few months. If the womam had an account with them then I don't understand what the big deal was though.Did she? As for giving you your balance...I really don't understand that one.

Banks are really shooting themselves in the foot these days. People are going to start just dealing in cash and money orders again. We can't afford the bank fees, plus...things like your story. This monthly service fee for checking account which wiped out the free checking accounts, was not taken well at all by depositers. I closed mine out...BofA. I am not going to pay them to hold my money for me until I need it. But then...they charge a fee if you use a human teller...I hear it is $8 from a previous BofA customer that changed to the same bank I did. And now...he also said that banks are charging if you want a paper receipt from your ATM transaction! Now they are not even going to let us have "back up" or proof of our transaction without paying them for it. IF there is a problem with the transaction...we have no proof we even did it unless we pay a buck for that proof. I just had a thing today with my new bank. I opened a free checking for over 55+ customers. I called this am and found a $17.50 service fee on my account! I called about that and since we opened a savings account with a large balance, they switched me to a "signature" account...without telling me. We withdrew the savings and that put my account chargable for the $17.50. I asked for it to be changed back to the 55+ and they said they don't have the option anymore! I checked on one of my little savings accts and they charged me $8! I went to the location and they just said, yeah, there is a charge if you fall below the minimum balance amount. I looked at the offers of new accounts and the 55+ wasn't there, but a free one for anyone was. I was a night mare! I finally just closed the 2 little savings out, the one big savings and they did change my checking back to the freebie. But good grief! They just do whatever they want with the accounts and let it up to you to find out whats going on! So, having a temper fit at the bank...I think it will be a common happening here very shortly

I"m tellin' ya...they are pulling some crazy stuff to pay themselves back after the fiasco they themselves caused about 2 years ago. They are trying to get it out of us and will every way they can. I mean, if I hadn't been balancing every week, look how many checks would have bounced cause they made a change they didn't tell me about...just changed it cause I qualified to make the change. Didn't care what I wanted! So far it is a monthly charge for a checking account (can be free only if you have direct deposit or huge daily balance...but if unemployed...neither are an option!) But a monthly fee ($17), a teller fee ($8), a ATM receipt fee ($1)and you are pushing $30 a month! That's my gas bill, or my phone bill or my internet fee!!!! And they want me to pay that to them for holding my money? I think not!

Now my education begins... Subject: Banking and Finance! Thanks for the info, coffee, now I should be more wary, the fees, for all the depositors collectively, could be quite a sum.

The bank is without a doubt one of the few places in the world that I am able to quickly go insane. When I was working outside the house I would take my paycheck on payday and deposit it into Tom's checking account. Well, there was a time that I needed a little bit of cash and I tried to do a split deposit. They wouldn't let me because my name was not on the checking account. This infuriated me because I was depositing my paycheck with my name on it and they wouldn't let me have any of my money.

That is just unreal...and one reason I try to do my banking online as much as possible. Years ago I also called the bank to try and check on my balance and got a whole pile of hoops to jump through before they would release the information to me. It was ridiculous!

Yup, I am enduring the pollution of the city. Had I my own life to live alone, I'll be in the mountains. But I'm all right for now.

It sounds like it. Just curious, are you in a city? I have found that banks in the smaller towns are more personal and easier to deal with. I also keep my savings in a separate institution...a credit union rather than a bank...because I get better treatment there. When I find a bank that treats me right, I stick with it but when they don't, I find a new one tout de suite!

Well, policy of the bank is to protect their own interest rather than the customer's. They would rather make one angry than to make the bank appear in the headlines in the papers, when anything goes wrong. Just think, if anybody were to pick up your identification card or your ATM, they can simply call the bank, provide all the details they have in hand, and they will get the all the information they want. So when one is a victim, they are bound to blame the bank for disclosing their stuffs right? So is the bank doing the right thing now?

God you're not the only one. Banking policies are going backwards. They try to set up facilities with newer "technologies" but their policies sucks so it is useless. Even in opening a savings account, they require a lot of things as if you're going to withdraw millions from them. Now it seems a quality customer service is very hard to find. Poor us.

I know dealing with banks - especially the big ones - can be frustrating. They all have different rules and guidelines they follow for whatever reasons that they do. A lot of times, those rules are are misguided or misunderstood and don't make any sense to us or the person that's enforcing them, but we can't make them change their rules. I think the key is to find the right bank that you can feel MOST comfortable with and make sure you read all the fine print before you do anything you haven't done before. When something changes, they have to notify you in some way, so read those too. I currently work for a bank (back office stuff, not a branch) and I don't even use their services. The only thing I MAY use in the future is a mortgage loan at an employee rate, but that's all. I am fortunate enough to have military family so I can use USAA. I personally think they're the best bank out there.

That is so very strange It is not like ours at all. I can understand the problem with the check moreso than their problem with you. If we are able to give our identifying information we can get balances. I know things are different in various countries.
