-Beware of this! Confidence tricksters can loot you of your money!
I had gone down south and came back from Chennai to Mumbai by train today. As soon as the train arrived, a helpful taxi driver[So I thought] escorted me to a cab. It was dark in the morning and though I was a bit hesitant I did not think that anything was amiss and went along. Of course , nothing serious happened but follows a story which I hope is a warning to others.
There was already another driver in a cab and this first gentleman kept my luggage in and I too got in. He suddenly produced a thousand rupee note and asked me for change. He wanted two five hundreds. Thankfully I did not have two five hundred rupee notes and I said so. He said that he had to fill gas for the vehicle and believing him I gave him one five hundred rupee note. Actually , I was a bit confused because I could not understand his Hindi too. and it was dark inside the taxi. I was examining the ‘thousand ‘rupee note given by him. He suddenly showed me the ‘one hundred rupee note’ that I had given him and asked me for the balance; At this point , I was digging into my purse for the balance change and seeing this in the faded light I immediately woke up. I told him clearly that I had given him one ‘five hundred’ and not’ one hundred’ as shown by him. and asked him for it. The other driver was there sitting quietly during our interchange.
.I gave back his thousand and told him that I did not have change. Though he had told me earlier that there was a meter for the taxi now he said he would charge two hundred and fifty rupees[the normal fare would be a hundred and fifty at maximum].I had heavy luggage with me and could not lift it and carry it all over again. So, I just bargained a bit and reduced the fare to a two hundred and came back. I was quite scared till I reached home because I have already heard gory stories as to how passengers are looted by taxi drivers. By God’s grace I reached home safe. On enquiry, the driver told me that the other man[the trickster] was an agent who was working in the station.
[].The driver approved of my refusal to give change to that trickster. Obviously this was after I came back home when I told hi m that they had cheated me with the increased taxi fare. I also came to know that this is a standard way of tricking unsuspecting passengers[asking for change].
[b]Lesson---Please do not fix up a taxi inside the station if someone approaches you. Walk up to the main road and take any taxi that would levy meter charges.[This was in Mumbai Dadar station]
Travel light as far as possible.

So glad that you reached home safe. Also glad that you weren't tricked. I avoid travelling in an auto or taxi alone when it's dark (early mornings and evenings count too). Especially when I am travelling, I ask for someone to pick me up at my destination. Earlier ...before I had kids it was different but now I'm very scared.

I have always been expected to go on my own anywhere and am used to it SV.Nowadays, I am getting older and need a change of spectacles too.THat is why this time I was under slight trouble and became a bit nervous. But this middleman and asking for change is soemhthing that people need to be aware of. THank God I reached home safe.I was a bit disturbed when I came back home with my face all hot. Here the distances are terrible and consumes a lot of time for people to pick you and drop you.

Before marriage I was always expected to travel on my own. But my in-laws do not allow it even when I am going to Trivandrum. Since there is no one from there who can come to pick me up, they insist someone from my family does. With kids luggage is always more than if I am travelling alone. The distance is a problem here in Bangalore too (not in Tvm)...and that probably could be the reason why my husband doesn't let me travel alone. He doesn't like making the time to come and pick me up and neither does he want me haggling with auto drivers when I am with the kids. I've had a bad experience with an auto driver in broad daylight. I was shaking about it for days.
Though I didn't realize, there are have been a few times when auto drivers have tried to fool me with the 'change' trick. But I've been alert and very careful when it comes to money.

Hi
I am glad that you reached your destination safely. Mumbai is a dangerous place with lots of hoodlums and you have to be very careful. They are on continuous lookout for people who are new to the cities. I usually travel to Mumbai by flight and use the pre-paid taxi service. Thats the safest bet.

Hi kalav,
First of all Thank god you reached home safely and I am from Delhi so i know how these taxi drivers operate. Yes everyeone has a tout inside the airport and railways station and if someone is too pally with you, first thing you should do is check your luggage and ur wallet. There are always prepaid taxi stands and you should take taxi from there as the govt fix your fare and then they note the number of taxi which you took so if something wrong happens then they know who to catch.

hello dear,
Thanks you got home safely.
Same things also happens here in my country.
Warnings given to commuters thru news spreading, and foreigners/tourists also given brief instructions of what/who to be careful with.
I also had the habit of texting my friends or my kids the taxi/cab plate number, operator info upon riding on.(for safety measures)
And,sometimes i pretend to have someone talking with my mobile phone when i am riding alone in a cab during wee hours as i work on graveyard shift and i took taxi/cab when my son can't drive me to my work place.
We should always be alert.
Have a great weekend dear

Thank God you reached home safely. This is common in Mumbai I am told. They should have the same system that they have at Airports where everything is determined before one starts the ride, the name and vehicle number is also registered.

Yes allknowing. Nowadays tHere are prepaid taxis in stations too.I saw a counter in Chennai but in Dadar I missed it.THank God I dodn't face any problem. The driver was a decent man and probably this middleman got his cut fROm the driver's fare.If only I had travelled light I would have walked up to the main road. On hindsight I realised I should have jumped off the car and taken another one.

HI Kala!
Thanks for sharing this incident. We are glad to hear that nothing untoward happened with you and you reached safely. Cheaters are everywhere and if one is not alert, while travelling there are chances that he might be duped. Many years ago, I went to Bombay along with my family (now Mumbai). We alighted at the point where inter-state buses stop. It was early morning and we had to go to Andheri (West). We boarded a taxi and asked him to down his meter. We reached at the point and were asked to shell out Rs.200/-, whereas the actual fare would have been less than one hundred. However, the meter was showing Rs.200/-, therefore, we had no option but to pay. Later on we realised that when the driver started his meter, it was not at zero. It was already Rs. 100/- which we failed to notice. We learnt a lesson from this incident.

Strangely Mumbai is much better than Chennai or southern districts as far autori ckshaws and taxis are concerned Deepak. But, here too this occasional cheating with meters is a common occurrence. In Chennai , the drivers fleece us and I would have spent a thousand ruppes on autofare alone recently when I had been to CHennai.I went around only to select places but each trip was very expensive.
THis incident in Mumbai was an eyeopener andthat is why I wanted to warn friends here.

I think fleecing by Autorikshaw and Taxi driver is a typical problem and it is there in every Metro/Major city. And these Auto and Taxi driver come to know that the fellow is an outsider and may not come again to their city again, so they do not hesitate to fleece him/her. It is really disgusting.

I am so glad that you send out this warning. Though I am a seasoned traveler I have to be careful not to fall prey to these sweet talking tricksters who are usually stationed at the airports or train terminals to dupe foreign visitors. I have every intention to visit India in the very near future and this caution is timely and will guard me against unwarranted happenings in foreign soils.

You can choose March if you intend touring north India. It may not start being terribly hot then. But after that it would be very warm.South India would start getting hot even now and in March and April , May it is quite hot. However , if you plan to visit the Himalayas or Western ghats then you can choose March or April too. But summer is considered to be 'season' and tariffs are heavy from April 1st. Check with your travel agent and choose the best deal possible.Delhi would be ideal if you plan to go to the Himalayas. If it is down the west coast then Mumbai is ideally suited for this.Perhaps you can even take the Konkan railway. But whatever, i f it is in the near future you must get your tickets booked in advance[if travelling my train within the country]Summer months are terribly crowded .

I am still blur on my distination, Mumbai or Delhi? I am depending on my traveling mate who keep insisting that we go to India next. Which month of the year is best for traveling in India? I might have to enlist a traveling agent if we intend to see places of interest there.

Thank you, for the head's up...it is really hard to admit that there is shortcomings in your home-land...and especially when it is "cabbies" (taxi-cab drivers)...as they are often the first person a traveller meets when visiting a foreign country! AND REALLY...what a greeting, to be ripped-off! I really wish their were more ethics amongst the persons that provide that service, as I know that is is NOT akin to your country. It happens here in Canada, too...and it irks me to no-end! I had it happen to me in Mexico, and in the U.S. and sadly it creates a negative feeling about the whole environment! Thank you, once again for the warning. Take care..and Cheers!

It is not that you must get ripped off here. India is a good country and one need not believe all the stories about the dangers lurking here. [Once I heard a Western friend remark thus and we assured her that the media creates sensation out of nothing and it is not that gunmen are lurking in every nook and corner.]But one needs to be alert and careful.

Wow! I think you got the wrong impression here...I was NOT, and I repeat, NOT disparaging India...I thought I made a point to let you know, it has happened to me in Canada, Mexico..and the U.S. And to my son, in China, and Brazil! My point was..IS...cabbies are the gateway to the country you are visiting, and it is sad that you have to be wary, as a traveller of them...and their shenanigans! Please note, all countries! Take care...and Cheers!

kalav56,
I have to say that India really have to spruce up security in these local bus and train stations, so that fraudsters and illegal taxis will not be able to operate or thrive.
As for me, I would usually arrive by air and would have advance hotel reservations where it will include airport transfers with their own limousines. Like you, I just could not trust the local taxis even the ones on the main road.
I hope that the authorities will improve for everyone's sake.

Oh kalav, that was a narrow escape you had! I am sure you are still shaking from the experience. I know people get tricked by auto drivers here in chennai all the time. Oh, it is terrible. Please be careful never never to board a taxi or any other vehicle with someone else other than the driver. These days, god knows, anything can happen. Especially in cities where nobody would even think of helping you even if you scream your lungs out.
And what you said is true. Do not take the help of anyone else. Come out and get the taxi by yourself. And this applies to auto or taxi in chennai too. Since there are very less taxi services in chennai, people mostly prefer the call taxi or the auto. It is always better to use the prepaid auto service which has a counter outside the central railway station in chennai. They do not bargain and it is a big relief even if you have to pay a little more. The normal autos will charge a fortune and they are to be avoided at any cost!

Yes Devi. THe moment I saw thsi man get into the taxi with another driver in it, I was getting a bit nervous and kept my fingers crossed till he left. Luckily, I did not face a great loss of money too because I got away with increased fare alone. If I had not this heavy bag with me, I would have got off the taxi.

We had a bad experience in Hyderabad station when we went to son's home for the first time, son was expected to be at station, but he was not there near our AC coach, we could not contact him, cell phone showed zero signal, we hired kuli, he chargred 200 rupees, it was too much and dropped at the taxi stand..
just than we got call from son, he was waiting for us, this kuli dropped us in the opposite side, son came there, soon came a taxi which he had booked, it dropped us in Habsiguda, the charge was 300 because of 10kms extra
Still it was less, the taxiwala were demanding 500 from us
Yes brokers are there..
Thanks for sharing
HAPPY EASTER
Happy posting, cheers.
Namastey.

This happens when you trust the taxi drivers or their touts when the approach you at the gate or the platform of a station. At Dadar I usually go the taxi line on the west side and wait for my turn. It may take some time but these fellows are generally law abiding and not scamsters. Thank your stars that you got away with it safely. Loss of money is not important in this situation.
