How much water should one drink in a day. If we drink too little, we suffer from dehydration, and if we drink more than there is electrolyte imbalance.

I have always heard that 8 glasses of water a day (64 ounces) is the recommended amount for adults, and that being thirsty is a symptom of mild dehydration in itself. Having said that, you could try keeping a jug of water around and just drinking from it all day.

Hi
you are right. If we drink less water we get dehydrated, at the same time over-hydration is also a problem as it leads to hyponatremia.Water is our body's principal chemical component and makes up about 60 percent of our body weight. Every system in our body depends on water. In 2004, the Institute of Medicine effectively overruled the 8 glass a day rule - with a new report. They stated a general daily recommendation of 2.7 liters of total water for women and 3.7 liters for men. This includes water from all sources -foods and drinks. Water intake from food will vary depending on your diet, higher fruit and vegetable intake means higher water intake. The more you sweat, the more water you lose. So heat and exercise play a major role, and, of course, any medical conditions that may affect fluid balance. For those doing exercise - increased water intake is important. Where considerable sweating occurs, then it is very important to maintain electrolyte balance, and plain water will not help. In that case we will also need to consume oral re-hydration salts.

I would say you should drink at least 2 liters of water. In summer, it may go as high as 4.

I would suggest you take 8 glasses of water in a day. 2 glasses for breakfast,3 glasses for lunch,3 glasses for dinner. Young childen need at least 5 glasses of water. But your diet will determine when to drink water. If you are taking a cup of coffee or tea in the early morning, it is assume you have indirectly taken your first glasses of water. There is no general role, water issue is determine by the age of the person. But adult needs more water than minor. thanks
