yesterday, i finally talked son into going to goodwill the used clothing store. ive been needing some more pants and tops. and for once i felt pretty good. in fact, it made my day and i felt great all day till about 8pm. i'll get to that later anyway, we got a map for the nearest from search on internet, BUT, when we got there it said"we have moved" well at least it gave the new address and when we went it had on front, "grand opening", I had picked up 4 tops i really liked and 4 pairs of pants in about half an hour. i dont like to shop long as i start into panic attack. on my way up to the check out, they announced "half off everything in the store today" the pants were marked 6.99 and tops, 4.99. I only paid $26. bucks for the whole lot.! 4 outfits. any other store it would have been that for just one outfit.so we stopped at burger king. yummy, whopper. lol. my day was just great. i got home and they all fit, like they were made for me! that usually dont happen either. of course i washed them first before trying on. i do that with new clothes even. Do you? do you ever shop at goodwill? ive seen people in there that looked like they have serious money, yet they economise on clothes. lol.

I used to shop GoodWill a lot, especially when my kids were growing. There's one in the next city over, but their prices are a whole lot more than the other Goodwill in the next county. The last time I was in the close one, I saw a great looking shirt, still had the tags on from Kohls. The price? Well, the price tag said $5. on sale at Kohls, yet the Goodwill had it marked for $7! Even though it takes me an extra half hours drive, I only go to the one that's in the next county. I do like when they have their colored tags sale, everything with a green tag (blue, etc) is marked down for the day to 50% off. Some of my favorite coats and dresses have been from Goodwill, and I always laugh because somebody will always ask where I got that really neat coat.

@ bunny my kids actually preferred shopping there because you can sometimes find some really neat stuff. One year we were laid off for many months, I gave them the choice of 50 bucks each to get clothes at KMart, or to spend at Goodwill. They chose Goodwill quote: 'because you can get more for your money Mom.'
@Gerty I'm the same as your daughter. So many times I'd buy brand new jeans, only to have them shrink a whole bunch on the first washing, plus they're far more comfortable if they fit from the get go!
@3snuggle Yeah, so true. My in-laws used to find it embarrassing that I even went into a store like that. One time I needed a dress to go to a wedding, and they just raved about the new dress I got, that is, until their son told them where I got it lol.

My daughter preferred her jeans to come from thrift stores, because they were already broken in and felt comfortable to her. That was nice.

i was just talking with my youngest son on the phone and he said they have 1/2 price sale every other saturday. so i was lucky it was this one huh? they shop there a bit cause they have 2 little kids. and very low income. i laughed because i remember him when he was about 10 yrs. he'd say mom this is so embarrassing. what if one of my friends see me in here? id say, then they'd be shopping in here to, right?

I only recently went to a good will store and bought some really fun and interesting books. I was so amazed by the wide selection of books I saw there and plan to return soon again.
I do know many people from the theater business who shop at Good will quite often for costumes and understand that by doing so they have also gotten great deals on clothing.
I am happy you were very satisfied with your purchased clothing, maybe next time I visit I will take a look around the entire store.

lol, I would have to be on the look out for which day it is half price day then, because I would be like bunny, so overwhelmed. When stores are so packed with people I feel like I am getting suffocated. I can't even have a sales person surround me as I feel like the walls are caving in. So I will either plan for an early start or later in the day. hehehe

It really depends on where the Goodwill is located whether they have worthwhile things. If one lives in a city or town with middle class to rich people in a 30 mile radius, then one has a good shot of getting some good stuff. I didn't grow near a "good" Goodwill. And for a few years my mom would shop there for me and my sister's clothes. And it was a sad looking store. But my mom made me think we were there looking for bargains. Like a treasure hunt. So I had no idea we were poor!
My sister lives in a nice town. Her Goodwill has awesome stuff. She and her husband live about three hours away from me. I'd like to go to hers sometime. She donates her things to there, and I KNOW her things are nice.

Too bad I don't wear her size - I could take hers when she was done with them. She thinks go out of style after a year or two. Her husband has a great job, so she can think that. I think things go out of style every ten years - I have to shop with that mindset!

I am not a very big fan of Good Will. I feel they are overpriced for things that are given to them for free and they do not do enough in our community. If I go there I just look at their movies, housewares and nicknacks if we are out "junk'n".
Honestly for the prices you mentioned I can watch the clearance racks and when the weather is right watch craigslist for rummages.

You never know til you look. I found a rummage 2 yrs ago that a lady lost weight and was getting rid of her "fat" clothes (sadly my size) the items were made by Liz Claiborne, Ralph Lauren, Apt9, and a few that were Fashion Bug. I found my hubby a pair of Dockers dress slacks for .50 last year! I found some cute tank tops w/ a current print and a sequined band at the waist for .50 ea. Trust me my kids have some Gymboree & Hillfiger but I paid rummage sale prices. You never know what you find til you look!
Around here rummage sale season starts here usually starts in late April - early May. Just pluck in your queary under rummages... Jr's size, girls 6x ect and see what pops up.
I know we are in a highly taxed state I don't know about high prices.... when you are used to rummage sale prices everything seems expensive. But my point is thrift stores are for people who cannot afford brand new.... but I can find brand new for what they charge on most items. Other thrift stores are usually cheaper.

i never thought of craigslist. that may be another good idea. but i really find it hard to think you could find quality, looks like new 4 pairs pants and 4 tops for 26 bucks elsewhere. you must live in a really high priced state for good will to be like that.

I like goodwill as well. I go to the St. Vincent de Paul and Salvation Army. We even have an old store that has been here since I was small. I can remember going there with my grandmother. It is great for old books and copies of National Geographic. Its great to just look around in too.

I've been to our goodwill store, here in town, a few times. Unfortunately it seems that every time I go, I never find anything good! I have friends who brag about the awesome stuff they find when going to 2nd hand shops. I never have this luck, unfortunately. Maybe if I went more often to see things on a regular basis I would have more luck at finding things I liked?

No Bunny I don't as the Clothes are quite cheap here in the Shops and specially when the Sale is on
I will buy Books and things like that from the Charity shop but not clothes, that is just me though, here they mainly have clothes for elderly Ladies (80 and up ) but I have a Phobia of wearing someone elses Clothes if I do not know them
I to wash Clothes when I have just bought them from the Shop
But I am glad you managed to find these great offers
Hugs

I love buying second hand stuff.. and hate paying full store prices for anything. Of course sometimes things at thrift stores aren't worth what they're asking. I mean I pay $7 at Walmart for jeans.. so I wouldn't pay that at a thrift store. The thrift stores around here have half off a particular color price tag, so I tend to look for that price tag to save even more money. The only time I'll buy something not that price tag is if it's a good deal or an item I really want and can't pass up.
Still, you did get a great deal on the clothes you bought.

The way they are talking i'm not even going to be buying from goodwill or anywhere else. Looks like we aren't going to be able to afford gas for the car. I don't go much but feeling sorry for people that have to travel alot. My youngest has to dribe 120 miles every day & then more w/his job.
if u are like me when u do have a good day , u do too much then u pay for it. I'm sorry u had a bad night. I can certainly relate. Take care of yourself. hugs.

Oh, yes! I love Goodwill for clothes and a lot more. I usually go about once a month, mainly just to see what they have. Sometimes I don't buy anything, other times I practically fill up the car! LOL It's very true and Goodwill proves that one man's trash is another man's treasure.
Every year before Christmas, I go through my stored Christmas decorations and take a lot of them to Goodwill, then pick up new things for decorating. Of course, I keep the things that have special meaning to me but I love the fact that I can decorate a bit differently every year and it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg.
I remember once finding a wool suit (skirt and jacket) that I paid $5.00 for. My mother had the exact same suit (in her size, of course) and she told me that she paid $150.00 for it! She was the kind of person who loved bragging about how much she spent on things while I was the opposite, I love bragging about how much I save.
As for those people who look like they have serious money, maybe they do BECAUSE they shop at Goodwill or maybe they just LOOK like they have money because of the terrific finds from Goodwill.

you are so right. ive wondered about that myself. if they found some of their nice clothes etc. at good will. i know ive been asked about a jacket i got there yrs ago, many times, because people liked it so much. they never believe i paid 5 bucks for it at goodwill.

I used to shop there a lot. Now I am not working and very rarely buy clothes or anything except groceries. When I did shop there I could always find nice stuff, sometimes with the tags still on for cheap. Now I just drop stuff off there, when I am spring cleaning or something. I am disabled and I don't even have to get out of the car! I love it, in fact I have some stuff to take now.

Me too, it feels like home when someone is kind.
If we think about it we should always act this way and I don't know people are ready to separate them selves in groups of religions or others, cause we are not divided by country limits or even continents, we are actually all a race, the HUMANKIND.

I like going to the good will to get clothes. I save lots of money there. I'm picky and just look at things real good and see if they still look new and then I will buy it. I knew people that if you looked at them you would think that they had lots of money because they wanted people to think they did but they got their expensive clothes at used places.

I have to drive at least a half hour to shop at a Good Will store. We do have some thrift shops in my town, and two of them are really neat, and they fund worthy causes. The third one make my skin crawl. I often feel completely overwhelmed when I go to these shops to shop, because there is so much to choose from.

I think every "Thrift" store, has an invitation sign out for me! I very seldom get to a metropolis where there is a Goodwill or Salvation Army, but in the small city that I shop, there is Hospital Aux. Thrift stores...and they are always on my list of "to do!" Just recently, I walked into the Thrift Store with two items in mind, a wallet and re-upholstery fabric! It was like they had my name on them...The upholstery fabric, what I had always envisioned..but could never find, nearly 10 yards for $20.00 (the quality of which would have been over $30.00 a yard here) so over $300.00 (and Iknew that in my mind, as I had been searching for a while)...and wallet $2.00! I went to pick up my lottery ticket on Sat., and my boss said, where did you get that wallet...I told here that I had paid $2.00 it, she grabbed it from my hands...looked it over, felt it..and said, "I have the identical one..and I paid $268.00!" I nearly passed out!
I found, I have kinda avoided the Salvation Armies here...ever since (Mrs. Kruger/Krocker---the widowess of McDonald's) bestowed 10 million dollars on them a few years back...the stores have been upgraded, and prices have soared! About a year/or two back...when the recession hit big time, there was a lot of news, about how prices had soared at Goodwill and Salvation Army due to the traffic increase from more monied clientele! It made me mad, that they were "making hay whilst the sun shone"---increasing prices while the traffic was there...so I have stuck to small independent thrift stores! Long winded, aren't I?

Yes...I'm surprised you did not know, about the donation, but it sure seemed to change the "big" picture of the Salvation Armies, here in B.C.! In the past, all were staffed with volounteers, now they have paid employees & Manager(esses) and they seem to have $$$$$ signs in their eyes! As you can tell by some of the replies here, people are finding cheaper clothes at Walmart...and that shouldn't be, as when the recession is over, the Sally-Ann loses all their moneyed shoppers, they will have to re-align their thinking to get the clientele back that supported them all those years. Sorry, this is an issue that makes me angry! Sally Ann was always a Salvation for the lower income persons, to be able to live and present themselves appropriately, even be able to buy a NICE designer dress for a special occasion. NOW, with them employing the middle-incomers, they are aware of designer & good quality clothes, and price them so that only the middle-income, upper classes can afford them! Accordingly, I now take my business to the Thrift Shops, staffed with only volounteers, and DO NOT have corporate management! My rant for the day!

I have only been to the goodwill store once. Until about 6 months ago there wasent one close enough. I had always heard about them though so when one opened about an hour from me where I usually go shopping I quick stopped in. The prices were a little high so I didnt buy anything but its definitely worth going back. Gas prices are so bad right now that I dont even know when I will go shopping again. I'm not leaving town with gas at 3.45 and my van only getting about 20 miles to the gallon.

Its so expensive to drive around in a larger vehicle. I need to go to walmart and get a buzzer to cut my sons hair but oh well lol its going to have to wait until the gas prices go down a little. I am glad I dont have to drive out of town every day. Instead of driving to wal-mart once a week or once every two weeks like before now I am just going to the grocery store in town. I like having a van its nice and roomy for the kids but the gas is expensive.

thats sad that you are stuck with a van when these gas prices went up. my son was stuck with an SUV and he traded to a nissan even though he went into more debt. at least he dont have higher payments so he figures it will be worth it in the long run.

Hi bunnybon,
I love Goodwill and just about any of the thrift stores that are around. You just can't beat the prices and many times through the years when I had to dress a certain way for work, that's where I went and saved bunches of money.
When I craft I usually get most of my items from the thrift stores too, and then re-furbish them into something different. It's great fun and I just love the bargains. That's why I like garage sales too, so much fun!

"ukay" is like a local term that means, you dig into it.. because the manner how they put the clothes are dumped into a table and you have to dig into it to look for which one you will like..lol it is not hanged properly nor folded neatly hehehe because it was shipped in bundle and they just open the bundles and you can "ukay" in it or dig into it hahaha
