Has this happened to you all? We have a female Belgian shepherd over three years old.A family friend offers me a golden retriever male which is about 8 months old and we can have the dog without paying a cent although they had asked for nearly 500 dollars originally.I was ready to bring home that dog,,Now the talk is that our three old shepherd will not allow me to get this new dog as she needs all the attention from all of us at home,,,personally I think I am able to take care of the situation,,but my family says that it is not easy.I agreed as our shepherd is so attached to us,,that she will show her attitude ,also she does not allow anyone to give her a proper bath except me. What would u do in such circumstances?

My son also brought in a Tibeten terrier (big size) and when I brought it back to meet her species but smaller version, they really showed their dislike, chasing her around the house like she is a terrorist. I have no choice but respect the wishes of my dogs who did not want to share their territory with a newcomer. I can see that once dogs are attached to their master they become 'possessive' and wish no others come in between.

There will always be problem the first time they meet, but as the days passed by, they will get to know each other. Just always watch over so you would be there should they start a fight. Whenever I have a new dog, I always tell the old ones that the new dog is a new friend and a new member of the family and that they should befriend it, I don't if they can understand what I'm saying but they seem to follow.

You are doing it the right way,as far as I guess.I have tried the same with the female shepherd we have and believe me ,,the chicken we had for last year.I used this method of talking to the dog and repeat what I said,,wow It worked for us.thanks

My husband and I are both dog lovers, especially rescue dogs. We would take the dog without hesitation. We currently have 5 dogs. When we bring a new dog into the home we introduce him/her to each of the other dogs one at a time, let them each get to know each other without the newbie feeling overwhelmed. The dogs may battle for alpha which is normal. Eventually they will settle into a routine with the family and each will know their place in the family as well. It most definitely can be done, it does take patience and a firm hand but it sounds like you can handle that without problem! Good luck!
