Are you ready to lose your job?

For sometime in the past, I have had rants about me hating my job. And, although I've been actively searching for a new one, I seem to be stuck in this one. One time I even thought of just go on and quitting even if there is no new job that I'd move into. Last night, it got me thinking, am I ready for that? Can I stay without a job even for a month? two? a year? How many of us here are ready for this kind of situation? (Well at least those with offline jobs who make less than $30 a month online) What if the economy takes a further dip down, and there would be more mass lay offs?

No, can't do Glorya! If there are more opportunities in Baguio. I wouldn't see myself living here in Manila. Goodness! It took me 7 months to get a job girl! From what I've read, you need to have at least 6 months salary on your emergency fund or savings before you decide to quit a job to sustain you while you look for a better job. Good for me I was married. Hubby was supporting me while I am off work but then he started complaining that I need to help out with the growing expenses of our family. So I'm here. Doing something that I wanted to do and have lots of downtime to be at Mylot. I hope you can find a job soon that you would truly be happy to be in.

Oh. Sorry to hear about your miscarriage. But, you're right. No sense being at the rat race when you're sacficing you happiness, your health, your family and peace of mind. Glad you like your job now.

I don't have that much savings, so I guess I can't quit yet. Wow, 7 months is a long time. At least you have your husband to support you. I do have downtimes here, too, which is why I MyLot a lot, but still, I want a new job that would be more fulfilling. Such a hard thing to do, though - finding a job to suit you.

I too don't see myself quitting at this time. There is not much savings in the bank. But I don't intend to be working for someone till I retire. I want to be my own boss. But it will take time. I am really tired of the rat race Glorya. I had a very stressful job before I resigned that cause me a miscarriage. So I am really like what I'm doing now, getting paid when you are almost doing nothing most part of the day. I just don't want to climb that corporate ladder anymore. I'm happy I have a stress-free life right now.

I think there would be a lot of adjusting to do.. but I think I would be able to handle it for a few months if nothing happens to me physically.

I couldn't handle it at first, but eventually I had to adapt.

Yes, that would really require a lot of adjusting. Good for you because you can handle it for a few months. I cannot handle even just one month of being without a job.

Yes, I guess whatever happens (since we will never know what happens next), we should be adaptable to the new situation. Else, we will not survive whatever it is that might happen. With the shaky economic and political situation around the globe, we just don't know what might happen next.

I don't think anyone is ever ready for that type of situation. I mean hopefully people are saving whatever little money they can. There were many of times where I thought my job may be closing and I was scared because I had no clue what to do. I have a little money saved up and I am not sure how long that will last. The only thing that would help me right now is the fact that my car payment is done with so that is an extra cost I would not have to deal with.

Unfortunately, one of the many things I want to seek a better job is because I'm not saving anything from this current one. It's true, compared to others it might seem high, but, not good enough for me to prepare for my future.

Hiya glory, Don´t think anyone is really ready to lose their Job at all. It comes as a surprise to most when they do. The worst thing is the way they are notified. It used to be in a Letter but now not even that. I would look for something that has a chance of being really secure otherwise I would stay put where I am for now. Our Economy here is dreadful too. People think that there is plenty of Work here and I wish there was some way they could find out that it is not true at all. We have five Million People out of Work unofficially because officially they want to make it look like it´s less but it is´nt it´s more. My heart breaks for People coming here with the idea that they can make good Money when the opposite is more like the truth. If I had your Job any Job I would try to stay put and weigh up the for and against you finding something else now. Only saying that though if it was me. I hope you do find another great Job actually.

Hiya glory, Well I hope things are better where you are then. The situation is still the same and getting worse. This applies to People of all ages and a lot of People from other Countries have gone home too. Getting an interview for a Job will soon become like something you find in a Museum at this rate anyway. Yesterday they were talking about what you do in an interview and I thought what Interview? They don´t even entertain the idea of giving you one in most cases you just send in your details and you might just be very lucky if they consider you at all. I feel really sorry for over forties and fifties People as they have had less chance to study than others and they are being treated most unfairly.

Yes, it's hard for them to get new jobs, so when they get laid off, it's hard. That is right, it's so hard to even get an interview these days. So many competition gives you less and less chance to get a job.

I agree. In our country, people believe that there are lots of opportunities outside, so they go out. And a lot of them are in your country, actually. We are still experience some dip in the global economy, so, no one is spared. That is perhaps the reason why I cling on to this job even if my heart breaks everytime I come here.

For now I can say that I am not yet ready to loose my job, although I am thinking of leaving my job. I can't still find a new sure job. In this time, it's so hard to get a permanent job and a good salary. I am permanent here but there are things that suffer from working here that's why I wanted to get a new job. I don't think I can leave without money in my pocket for a month so I will have to wait for a sure job before resigning here.

Yes, it's very difficult to leave your job when there's not next job waiting. Like you, I need to wait a little while longer because I can't be without job now.I hope for a better future for us. Thanks for the response!

I have made a bold decision once of quitting my job because I actually can't last long from it but what I found out is that I can't even last longer without having a job. I said that time that I'm ready no matter what but it just made me depressed for not finding another job immediately and it almost took me for about six months before getting into my current job. No matter how prepared we are sometimes, we will still never expect what the outcome will be in the future. So I doubt it if ever I have to decide like that again.

I did that one time, too. The job before my current job. I quit before I knew whether I would be accepted in the next company. Altough I was kind of 75% sure I'd gotten the next job, so I wasn't as worried. It took almost a month before I started with the next job.

Well that time I quit my job without applying to another job. I planned to take a rest first for some months but the problem occurs when I tried to start applying again because it was already difficult to land another job. As I've mentioned that it took me six months before getting another job and that six months of waiting feels like forever. I guess I should done like what you did that I should have searched first for another job before quitting. Good thing we still got another job though so we should be thankful for that and learn to value it. Cheers!

That is right. Well, we learn from our experiences in the past. And now, at least we know that being without a job for a while is really not fun. That is the only thing keeping me here, actually, the fact that if I leave now, I might not get a good job immediately. There are bills to pay. And I need to survive. So resigning recklessly, that is one thing I try to avoid.

Right, I do not want to be a burden to other people, too, that is why even if I really want to, I cannot quit just yet. I am not prepared and I'm not sure if I could get a new job immediately.

I have been thinking about leaving my current job as well, and I have thought of just leaving even if I have no new job to go to.. but yeah, based on my financial status, I don't think I can really do that... So I am still here after 4 years.. though hopefully that will all change in a couple of months.

Maybe you just need to take a break. To freshen you up. Sadly, in my case, no matter how long the vacations I take, when I go back, it's still the same. I really need to go. But, yes, based on my finances, I can't.

Hello Glorya, I have lost my current job a long time ago, but that i wasn't afraid, but i guess i was afraid of going back with all other experienced workers in the same field being frustrated with their current jobs.. just only because of those freaking small problems that starts with this.the economy has nothing to do with. sometimes it does.

It's good to hear you're not afraid to have lost your job. In our country, though, the economy always has something to do with it. Too little opportunity, especially now with our fellows working abroad coming home because of disturbances in other countries.

Well thats a good question my friend.. You wouldn't believe I felt the same this morning.. at present my work is not doing that great its not that I will not get another job but I like this company and want to be here for some more time but due to few disappointments I'm just giving up on my hope.. I called my manager this morning and told him that I will not be able to make it to the office but I realized that I was not prepared to stay back ho,e and kill my time doing nothing and I had to go to the office if not I might lose my pay for today.. as you said we might think of just quitting and stay back home but our commitments and self conscience will allow such things,, I'm so used to working that I cannot be without working any more.. so I'm trying to learn things and keep my emotions within..

Right, I cannot see myself being idle, either. So, it would be difficult to just quit my job. It's good you like the company you're in. There will always be a few disappointments wherever you are, so it's a matter of acceptance. In my case, I don't see anything good anymore, the disappointments have far outweighed the benefits of my job that is why I want to leave.

Hi dear.... I am not to quit my job... as i am in a high profile job here in India. I know its hard to find a good job in today's world. Most of young generation is struggling here and there. So in this situation, I think i am lucky enough. I hope you will get a good job as soon as possible. take care.

The insensible me, especially at my lowest point or sometimes when I'm VERY pissed with what's happening in the office, I imagine myself (and close to doing it) drafting a resignation letter, submit it, walk out and just move on. However, the sensible me knows that I can't just do that. I'm not ready, my meager savings (if you can even call that savings) is not enough, I have loans to pay, need to feed myself, need funds for all my projects and the list goes on. Also, I was one of the unfortunate newbie professionals who experienced layoff years ago and I must say it's hard on the pocket and on my self-esteem. Hopefully, I won't have to go that path again :).

We are so doomed. But, yeah, we make do with what we have until we find better ones. I remember your story about that one, and I don't want to be in that situation, either. So, yeah, even if it hurts, let's show up to work, grin and bear it, and in my case, hope that somebody (of the many offices I'd applied to) please call me up for an interview.

I am one who earned six figures for several years and the company took a turn for the worse a full year ago. I ended up with no job the entire year as many employers find me way overqualified. So I lived off my savings trying to keep up with the bills with with the 140K college loans it has not been easy. So I finally am doing "some" independent contracting work, and by no means does it replace my customary salary. If the economy would dip yet more, oh I don't know where that wold leave me as I am tight as it is.

Aww. Sorry to hear that! Six figures, wow. I hope things get better again, for all of us. It's hard to cope with the fluctuations in our economy. I only wish that the world has hit rock bottom, so that there's not way to go but up. I hate to imagine what would happen if it goes down further.

A sad truth that I can't live over one month if I lose my job without new job! I wish I can do different. But I can't now. So, I always try to look for the new ways to earn money. In order that if I lost my job, I can live well with my income.
