Just was curious as to how other people felt about having a small breed dog or a large breed dog. What makes them so different. Also would you prefer a purebreed dog or a mutt? I guess there are advantages and disadvanteges to both, but what do you think or feel about it?

Hello midnightrider, I don't prefer neither small dogs nor large dogs. I like medium size dogs. If I had to choose between a large one and a small one, I'd surely choose the large one. I don't like too much the small dogs, because they tend to be noisy and they gather all the mess with their coat when they walk. I like the dog to be my companion and also my protector but with a small dog I should be the one to protect her.

I prefer big dogs.I feel safer with big dogs.plus, they're very huggable.I love big dogs like German Shepherd,Doberman, and Old English Sheepdog.the breed doesn't matter to me.as long as the dog is well behaved, then I will pet him/her.

I prefer larger dogs. they're better to cuddle, as you can really get your arms around them and snuggle, and you're a lot less likely to trip over them. aside from the very largest breeds, they tend to be healthier than small dogs, as a lot of dogs have been made so small by breeding runts to runts, which does not lead to a good genetic stock. larger dogs are usually calmer and bolder than smaller dogs, which can often be nervous, and may bite or snap through anxiety. I know a lot more people who've been bitten by small dogs than large dogs. and when I was a dog groomer, the large dogs were a lot more laid back and forgiving. when I was growing up we had a great dane and a german shepherd dog, and now have a deerhound and a lurcher. we also had greyhounds. so medium to large dogs to me. and I'm not someone that considers, say, a labrador to be a large dog. they are a medium dog. when looking at dog coats and harnesses, bizarrely, toy breeds are small, and something maybe the size of a spaniel would be considered a large. which is ridiculous. a spaniel is on the smaller side of medium.

I have three Chihuahuas, and I have never had more loving or protective dogs of any kind. They don't do very well with strangers, but that is about the only thing that some people would see as a problem. I do not like a bunch of people hanging around anyway, so this is not an issue for me. If anything, they keep most of my wife's annoying family members from coming over here all the time. LOL

That is funny. That is why I posted this discussion. My husband and I have always been big dog fans, but just a few weeks ago a chihuahua showed up in our yard. We took her in and now my husband absolutely loves her. This coming from a guy who said he would never own a chihuahua.

I have a chihuahua/Jack Russell mix. We just love him. My Jack Russell Terrier had a litter with my daughter's Chihuahua. This wasn't planned but we are so glad we kept one of the pups. He doesn't do well with strangers either, but to us and the grandkids you couldn't find a more lovable dog. Jack Russel Terrier's are also a good choice. Some of them are a bit hyper but the one I have has never been that way. She is a very lovable dog. Jack Russell's are a medium size dog. If I was counting on one for protection I'd pick a Chihuahua over a big breed.
