In India if you reach age of 60, then you are a Senior Citizen; you enjoy certain benefits like higher interest rates in banks, concession in train fare etc. But for income tax payment it is 65!!! I am happy to learn that in the new budget this has been lowered to 60, good news for me, I will be paying less tax in the next financial year. What is the age for enjoying senior citizen benefits at your place, what benefits you enjoy, is the age same for income tax assessments too? Please specify the country name. Please share your opinion in this matter. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . Cheers have a lucky day ahead.

In Australia retirement age is 65 for men and 60 for women although there has been talk of raising it by a couple of years which is not exactly pleasing too many folks right now! If people who reach retirement don’t have a good superannuation plan in place all they will have to live on is the old age pension which, as far as I know is only around $250 a week or so. If folks can manage an investment portfolio for them while they are still working it will make a huge difference in the long run but it is not always possible to have money left over.

Here in Canada the age is 65. My husband will be 65 on April 7th (in a little more than a week from now) and he is really excited. I bought him a t-shirt as a joke, to give to him to wear on his birthday. On the front it says "SENIOR CITIZEN! Give Me My Damn Discount!!" Then I bought him a button to pin on his coat that says "not giving a damn for 65 years." LOL

I've read Jazel's post. Yes, it's the same here in the Philippines. They enjoy certain benefits, although they're also forced to resign on most jobs too. That's the downside of it.

From the government? I can start taking Social Security (reduced amount) at age 62. I can get Medicare at age 65. Other benefits through organizations such as AARP start at age 50. No reductions in taxes that I am aware of.

In the Philippines Senior Citizenship also starts at 60. Once you reach this age you will have to secure a SC Card which will entitle you to 20 percent discount in restaurant, bus fares, hospitalization, medicine and many more. I am not so sure about tax but usually those who reach this age are no longer working so they don't have to pay taxes anymore.

In the UNited States some people can start getting discounts as a senior citizen at 55! Like at McDonald's! You can get coffee at a discount! Retirement age is 65. You can retire at 62 but you only get half of money benefits. At 65 you can get full benefits and be on Medicare. If you don't retire at 65 you can still owrk and get full benefits! I work with 2 senior citizens you do that because they don't want to retire yet! One gentlemen is 74 and the othe is 80! I know there is other benefits a senior citizen can get but I don't know them off hand!

hello dada, I've read other responses from other mylotters that also from my country and yes those were the privilege that senior citizens were enjoying here in my country. And upon reaching 60 they do not pay income tax return anymore esp those retirees. Have a good day dada

Here in the United States, the age that individuals must reach to meet the majority of senior citizen benefits is 65 years old. However, there are some small companies that will start giving benefits to people when they reach 55 years of age. People at 65 are able to get Social Security income and there are some programs that will also help older individuals with their property taxes in some states. However, there are few universal benefits to being a senior citizen in the United States.

Here in the Phils., once you are 60, you are already a senior citizen. You have the benefits of 20% discounts on prescribed medicines, fares and restaurants. The senior citizens also have their own associations wherein they get to socialize by themselves, go ballroom dancing among other activities. But they don't pay income tax anymore.
