My five month old grandson is with me. He is such a sweet angel and is a very well behaved child. His mother is still feeding him .She is very much prone to cold and cough but because she is an adult she manages. This little one is having cough since today morning and in the evening it has now really got aggravated. He seems to have an allergic cough and is finding it difficult to breathe. He can be upright on the shoulder but cannot lie down. He just pathetically sings ‘ahh!ahh!ahh ’ if we keep him on the lap and we are able to see that he is in distress. We gave him some anti allergy drops prescribed by the doctor and I hope he gets well soon. I wish he gets some sleep for the night. Can any of you tell me some known methods of cure? He is just 5 months old .

Hi Kala! Hope the little angel gets well soon. He needed to be treated as per the advice of a Child Specialist and if the treating Doctor suggests he could be given indirect steam, while lying on the lap of his mother or you.

You can use the natural theropy to the mother like the juice came from the neem tree leaf apply to her. It will tastes bitter, so the child may not wanna take her milk. (In villages we are applying this method only).

Hi. Are you quite sure it's allergies he's suffering from? Are the drops working? I'd strongly suggest taking him back to the doctor, or even the hospital, as it's obvious he has much trouble breathing. Even if it's allergies, he should be seen right away for breathing difficulties due to his age.

Had to add, watch for neck and/or back stiffness, fever, vomiting. If he has these, get to the ER immediately!

Thank you very much; but by God's grace, he does not have those scary symptoms. His mother just fed him and made him sleep on an elevated position. By God's grace he slept through the night

Hi dear, How is your grandson now? Hope he must be feels better now. It is really difficult when small kids got affected with cold and cough. He is too small and I only suggest you to follow the advice of his doctor. Please make sure that infected people do not contact him so closely. When his mother is ill there is no alternative. Take care of both mother and child well. I wish a speedy recovery to both.

"Finding it difficult to breathe" is definitely a cause for concern. The child may need antibiotics. Anyway do visit this link:http://www.baby-medical-questions-and-answers.com/baby-cough.html which might help. I wish your grandson a speedy recovery.

THe doctor has given cough drops but his mother is also suffering from cold and cough.Adults themselves struggle at times ;the little one takes time to get back to normal.I hope he settles down by tomorrow. If not , we will take him to the doctor once again tomorrow.

In the meantime a mild fomentation with broiled ajwan to which some salt is added could help.Vicks fumes not directly though is not a bad idea.

Oh my! Poor baby! If it's an allergy, then medicines are the only thing that works. But to get some relief.....I would do steaming for the kids. I would plug the steamer in the bathroom and let the bathroom fill with steam and then take the baby in for a bit. The smaller the bathroom the better. This usually works for cold and blocked nose. A raised head while sleeping also brings some relief. There have been days when my little one would sleep only on the shoulder when he had a blocked nose. I hope the steaming and elevated head works.

We also gave him indirect steam SV and also applied some dry heat. The poor baby --it is terrible when such small children fall sick.He cannot explain anything and we are helpless. We are giving him the drops prescribed by the doctor AND there was some improvement. But, his mother's cold is dreadful right now.His catching it cannot be helped too.We intend taking him to the doctor.

For both my kids and my grandson I would roast ajwain and make a small pillow of that and let the child put his head on that pillow while sleeping. Ofcourse every few days the pillow needed to be changed. some ajwain was also put on the head and heels. And since the child is too delicate to put vicks on their forehead I would put vicks on a handkerchief and keep that handkerchief a little near the child's nose. That way they would inhale the vicks. And since the mother is feeding the child if she took some light medications for her cold and cough under Doctor's advice I think the child would also get some of it.

The little thing is under different medication now and the doctor told us that it is some viral infection which should settle down in two or three days. If it does not, she would start some antibiotics. THanks a lot Mayka .

Hi Kala, I can imagine the distress your grandson must be going through as such a small child can't even speak up what he is going through...I know about a very effective remedy to put two drops of brandy in lukewarm milk and give him before going to bed..I remember I used to give it to my son and it used to work.Hope your grandson gets well soon.

There's steam, or Vick's vaporub, but if he's really having trouble breathing, I would take him back to the doctor.

Whatever the doctor has advised should be adhered to,More warm liquids as the place might be still chilly ,generally I also use a certain kind of drops that clear the throat passage etc. as long as the child develops any fever, you will need to take extra care,,Wish you and the baby best of health.

hello kalav, You can try some home remedies. If he is having hard breathing due to colds and cough,do a steam method. Put how water in a basin and let the baby lie down in your lap covered with linen enough to cover the baby and the hot water. The steam/smoke from hot water will help loosen the colds, cough (this is best alternative than using a nebulizer) This can be done also to adults just add some menthol drops in hot water. But for babies, menthol drops is not advisable. Hope your grandson will be fine soon. Have him checked if he is allergy of any things,or,do you have any history of asthma? (which caused his mother to be prone of cough and colds) For such cases, ion can be of great help...and pine trees is a good source of ion (pine trees emits ion much early in the morning) so,it's best to be out in the open with pine trees around early in the morning. See you around

I'm so sorry to heard you experienced, my suggest is better you're consult with specialist doctor who expertise with childhood diseases. Before that maybe you can learn about genetic factor from that baby, or less of nutrition when his mother pregnant. You can also ask your friend or others who have similar experienced with you. Hope it will better soon.
