surprise, surprise. I just wanted to log into my YT account (200+ videos) and it says: you have to create a Google account first, otherwise you won't be able to log in anymore. I thought, well, let's create that damn account. But what is that? You have to confirm your account either with your mobile number or your telephone number. Grrrrrrr, I don't have a mobile phone and if I give them my telephone number they'll also have my address. They must be kidding! If I do that I'll probably end up in a government/ FBI data base because I criticized certain politicians etc or they'll sue me for some type of copyright infringement. No, it's not that I upload whole TV series or so but there are one or two videos in which I incorporated a few TV scenes. Man, what shall I do?
Strangely, I only got this message with one account (got several) but this is the one I mainly use... so it seems as if my suspicions are somewhat confirmed.
Anyway, have you also got this message and if so did you give them your number (address)?
Cheers

I just logged onto youtube to see if it was this way for me and thankfully it wasent. I would have been really annoyed to have had to go through all that trouble that you did just to use youtube then I wouldnt bother with the site anymore. There shouldnt be any reason they need your phone number to log in. I was able to log in just as I've always done.

I have a youtube account and I have seen a simualr message. I do not think they require a gmail account becase I have been able to skip that. However I have not been on youtube in a long while and for all I know I may need to do that. but I do not want to give too much infor to them. esp. cell phone number.

I don't have a Youtube account, but just recently I signed up for eBay. They had to give me some code number or something but they would only do it by calling me. It's getting to be ridiculous. I don't think websites have a right to ask for personal contact information. Anonymity is the blessing of the internet.

the worst thing about eBay is the fees. They charge 10% of the auction price (!!) plus slotting fee. That's not fair!!!
the problem with anonymity is that once you lose it everyone - I mean EVERYONE - can trace you down for what you say and what you stand for. Say, you are against racism. If some neo nazis get hold of your address they might start to threaten you. Or if you want to save the environment and say something against oil companies and thelike you'll most certainly be put on a government/ FBI list as a possible target for observation.
'They' may know you anyway but if you give them your address readily they won't need to admit that they obtained your address by espionage. They could simply say: hey, you gave your address on the Inet, hence we know it.
Cheers

I wanted to check to see if it affected me but then I remembered I needed to do that back about 4 months ago. So I have this one account specifically for youtube. How annoying pretty soon it seems that we have to create an account for each and every account we use.
You might want to ask The_Lamb as he is a heavy youtube user.
