What is your opinion about the stigma surrounding mental illness? Are you aware of it? Does it affect you?

Yes, these people are sometimes being discriminate in the society and prone to abuses. I had taken care of these people especially those with schizophrenia. Sometimes they are prone to abuse because they are loss in touch with reality and from some family they are the shame. Some of them just roam in the streets because their family can't afford to take them to a mental institution and buy their medications. They are sometimes rape and abuse physically as well as mentally. Some people may ignore them if they are having hallucinations or delusions in the streets because they are shouting and cursing but there are those that make fun of them and that triggered them to be hostile. Making fun of these persons don't do any good to any of them. They became like that because of environmental factors like problems in their family, financially, pressure or sometimes things that they just keep with them and they can't cope with it. Some may believe that it maybe genetics due to inherited traits. All in all maybe the government can have programs with these persons like a free mental institutions and medications. Social support from the community is also needed. Health teaching for mental awareness to the people is a key point... if their is enough knowledge about them then... STIGMA WILL DISAPPEAR!!!!!

Yes I am aware of the stigma surrounding mental illness. It does affect me because I have bipolar disorder and anxiety. Mental illness is treated differently than other illness, mostly for just the lack of knowledge on the subject. I try to remove the stigma by educating people, setting the record straight, but people have the tendency not to really listen. It is really difficult sometimes, when people don't understand and jump to conclusions about your behavior.
