Should I continue my nursing career?

I am a nursing graduate last 2009. I have been a volunteer for about 10 months. As of the moment, I am unfortunately unemployed. I am in a struggle right now. I want to be a nurse who is working in a hospital. However, there is no opportunity for me to practice such because I do not have the what s0-called "backers" who are undeniably the biggest factor to become a staff nurse in a certain hospital. What should I do?.. Another problem is, I do not have the enough fiancial resources to go abroad as well. Should I forget now the nursing path and find a work which is not related to my profession? My hopes to land a job as a nurse is slowly disappearing.. But I am still trying to hold on.. :(

hi there aresh! i am also a nurse like you. When i graduated, i applied for a job a a call center and saved money so that i can take the exams. I have loved the call center life because of the money and the easy work however i quit because i wanted to try life as a nurse. When I got employed as a nurse, i was first happy bcause i got to experience everything that was taught in school. However, later on, i got tired. Nurses have the most difficult and burdened jobs in the hospital here in the Philippines and if ever i can turn back time, I wont study nursing and instead be an agent.

I'm sad for what is happening to your career right now. This truth about this backer is really disappointing. I hate them. I think this not your time for your nursing career, you better look for another job in your country that can accept a nursing grad like you. Some of the employers are accepting applicants even if the course are not related in the job. Try it! and if you earn save it and if you think the right time for nursing is come you have the money already to spend on. good luck!!always pray!!

Well I think you should pursue what you took up in school. That is the ideal but it all depends on you if you are happy where you are right now. I think that when it comes to backers that maybe true but that should not stop you from applying for every hospital that you may know of. I think at one point in time they might need of your services. I think our country badly needs nurses, and since there is slow down for demands for nurses abroad then you might get stucked here in the Philippines for a while. My sister stayed here for quite sometime before she got an opportunity to work abroad.

Wow, I found someone like me here... I'm also a Nurse, also graduated 2009 and still a volunteer nurse in a hospital up to present. Same problem, same thinking, same worries.... I'm also considering to find other job that will compensate me and then save money to be able to go abroad. But unfortunately I still can't find one :(. Hope that we will meet our goals and dreams someday.

Hello kabayan areshstarfreak. I am sorry to hear about your situation. If you have time finding job as a nurse, how about getting a job which still uses your knowledge in nursing but is different from a nurse because you work at home? Try to go to websites such as http://www.odesk.com then apply for a job online as a virtual assistant or researcher, writer for a nursing or health-related blog, etc. Try to go that site and browse the available jobs and see what I mean. I understand you do not want to waste your studies but if there is really no job as a nurse available, this may be the next best thing for you because it is related to your college course. I do hope you will find a job soon. - Cebu MD of http://www.cebumd.com

There is still hope in everything we do. Don't get easily discouraged, you have several options here in the Philippines. You can volunteer as a nurse through inquiring at DOLE, you can further enhanced your skills and updated with information by attending trainings and seminars. I'm a nurse too and like you, I have encountered several ups and down but i never did give up on NURSING. It's degrading when other institution simply won't accept you because they are having criteria on Board rating. In my opinion, the rating does not guarantee that you are an efficient nurse while for some lucky folks who have the brains and skills. Once you are trained, you can easily adapt the culture and learn on it. Nursing, doesn't stop on passing the Board. For me, it is by constantly updating myself with new trends in the Health care field and reviewing on old nursing books but keeping posted on the new changes.
With regards to applying abroad, there's never been an instance that you cant get something out of your pocket. I mean, we have to spend. Foreign countries would opt to hire someone with experience. We need to meet there criteria too. Some nurses, went to a call center job which i think is also good because you can practice your communication skills but you have to make it to a point of spending an extra time on your nursing career. you can perhaps attend seminars and trainings, this i believe is a plus points or you can volunteer at a nearby medical clinic during your off duty.
