Wikipedia refers to it as a spirit of communal unity or effort to achieve a particular objective.
While us Filipinos refers as helping one another in times of need.
But right now, even if you need to help, rather people nowadays take advantage of their own kind. One example would be a cluster of house burning in a squatters area in Metro Manila.
Instead of helping their neighbors other people even had the guts to loot and take whatever is left to the families who already lost their home.
Sad how us Filipinos even other people think of our fellowmen.
I just hope that people will realize before the nick of time that everything comes back ten folds of what they did to their brothers or sisters.

Bayanihan still exist in the Philippines. For me, bayanihan is the act of helping other without having nothing in returns (Except for the happy feeling). I doesn't mean that bayanihan can only be observe when some people carrying a Nippa House, or building a house without any money as a payment. Bayanihan can also mean as simple as helping an old or a child to cross a street. Cleaning up the street or simply putting the trash on the right place. That's what bayanihan means to me.

Indeed, the advancement of time and progress of technology amplified with the vanity presented by the mass media have taken away some of the most treasured traditions of our culture. I mean, I can't blame those people who take advantage of others. After all, it's a matter of survival of the fittest. It's just that so many things have changed over time and most of these changes aren't that good. Life has been more difficult than ever for us Filipinos because of the lack of opportunities that could support our living. Social problems are more widespread than before and it drives us crazy. But I do believe that bayanihan is still alive within our archipelago. We just don't take notice of it because we're too busy trying to survive in a chaotic developing nation.

Actually such good traits of Filipino is gradually gone in our society, because of many things first of that money matter, colonial mentality, character and society itself. Unlike before mostly if you need help many are willing without any return but now any help you need money is about... that is reality.. see you around
