Seller cannot post negative feedback on buyers, is it fair?

Ebay used to allow sellers to post negative feedback on buyers but Ebay removed this functionality, and so buyers can post a negative feedback against sellers, even if it for trivial reason or at buyers' whim - but sellers cannot do anything to countermand it.
I have seen PowerSellers with perfect records suddenly became tarnished when a buyer said "The CD she received is dirty". It's ridiculous but Ebay does not give Sellers a way to dispute such nonsense negative feedbacks. Some theorize these so-called buyers connive with rival, dirty sellers to malign the record of a targetted seller.
What do you think should be done to protect Sellers from such unreliable buyers?

You can never make everyone happy in Ebay. Someone will always complain. There is not much you can do. They should have left it the old way.

This is terrible and I have a friend who sold a very expensive shirt and was bought for really cheap. The shirt was worth like 10 times he amount. After buyer received he lied and said it was dirty and it was almost new. So my friend said send it back and you will get refund. The buyer did not want to pay for the shipping so instead contact Ebay and end result he got his money back, kept the shirt and he even gave negative review to my friend. It is like Ebay does not protect the sellers but more so the buyer. I think more sellers need to complain and get the point across that changes need to happen.

I think that it makes a lot of sense to remove the functionality that enables a seller to post negative feedback about a buyer. Up until recently I had been wholeheartedly content with the service of those I had purchased items from. Reflecting this fact, I had awarded only positive feedback. But that may well change in the coming week.
Over three weeks ago I bought five items off Ebay. Of the five sellers, one responded that very day to say the item had been posted. Within a four day period I had still not received it; yet all the other items had arrived. So I contacted the seller - to give him the benefit of the doubt - and enquired about the status of my order. But I have still not received a response. And the item is still not here.
I have no doubt that it is only a handful of sellers who provide poor and unprofessional service; however, I should be able to give honest feedback without any avenue of having my own rating affected because a seller does not like it. And it's because of that fact that I applaud Ebay's decision to remove the functionality.

I wonder why the switch to this new way?? I would think that the sellers should be kept happy, because without the sellers there would be no site. I have learned that dealing with people in general is difficult, sometimes no matter how much you bend for them, there will always be that one that ruins reputations.

i agreee that sellers should have some way to respond to buyers claims- especially if they are not true. from my experience- i never had a complaint from a buyer after i made a sale. i made sure the item was in good condition and properly packed and shipped. i guess for now the best way to counteract that is to make sure the seller specifies that no returns are allowed on the item description.

It is completely unfair and has allowed buyers to act with impunity. I have never understood why Ebay changed the policy. Buyers now feel they can renege on any deal without fear of any consequences--and it happens all the time.
