I am from India. Here we have a Chain of Departmental Store by the name of 'Big Bazaar'. This store offers a exchange scheme once in a year all over the country, where we can take our old things and sell them off to them in exchange of coupons and these coupons can subsequently be used at the counter for the money while settling the bill! Though I have never experienced and availed this scheme I have seen many people doing it! Have you exchanged anything old for the New product in the market when you are on shopping? Please Respond! Thanks !

Wow! I think that it is a very good idea! At least, these things will just not be left at our storage. It helps clean stuffs that we don't possibly need anymore. Saves storage in our house. Unfortunately, we don't have such a shop that I know of in my country. Often, to dispose of old things, we actually do a garage sale or otherwise give it to charity or to relatives that might need it more.

Hi Dear Sweet Pea! I actually read about the garage sales in the comics when I was kid but really don't have any idea about it! Yes in our country we also give the things in charity to those who require it or to the relatives or friends who need them. We have got vendors here who collect unwanted things on scrap basis and they pay some small amount for this so called garbage or unwanted junk! Possibly these people are disposing this junk to a big dealer and finally these things are being taken for recycling! Thanks for responding!

Wow! That must be a fun too, to arrange a garage sale, you must be having lot of good time while disposing your unwanted old things no? I wish I could attend one of such sales just to experience one! Thanks dear Sweet Pea for the information!

In a garage sale, you just bring out on your yard things that you want to dispose and make a post that you are on a garage sale. Your neighbors would see it and inquire how much your items cost. It usually is a bargain sale. In my country there would be people moving around the community to collect and buy scrap irons, bottled waters and newspapers which they would sell at a scrap yard. I agree it is a good way of recycling.

Dear Ak Rao, Iam also from India. And had experienced it once at Ahmadabad Their is no harm in doing so but be careful because the things which are to be exchanged should be of no worth to you because they will exchange it at nominal value, so you might think at that very moment that its better to keep it at home.

Hi Dear Kishuvishal! I can understand your point. These people must be giving the actually the cost of the scrape, irrespective of the condition of the product as these people are paying us as per the Kilo gram. Yes we may not get a fancy price for a small functioning gadget as it may weigh some few grams! Any way dear friend as our friend Nishant says why any one would pay anything from their pocket, in a business? Thanks for responding!

I like doing this. We have pawn shops and consignment shops and I bring my unwanted (brnad name) clothes in there and get a check for a fraction of what they sell it for. It's a good deal. Sometimes I also choose to use the money I earn from selling my clothes as a store credit, so I can pretty much buy new clothes. It's nice! I love doing it. lol

Hi Dear Maezee! I think it is almost similar way what we are doing here! I think you are concentrating more on the clothes! Here we can get money for selling any old house hold things and i return we get the coupon which can be used in place of money while purchasing any new item! Yes, it is nice ,if we can save some amount by giving away the stuff which other wise would have gone as a trash, then why not do it? We are indirectly helping in recycling the things! Thanks for responding!

Wow! Back in the Philippines, we can exchange old cellphones for new ones. I wish my country can adapt this same concept. All though it may sound appealing changing old things for new ones, I advise that before doing so - make sure that the exchange is something to your benefit in terms of savings and usefulness since the mall might take advantage of this and just get your old stuff for a very low price that you need to shell out a lot of money for the new one. Be critical and mindful of this. Just a word of unsolited advice. (",)

HI AKR, That's a really cool idea! It should be practiced all over. Most of us has things in one form of another that are still useful but are just sitting on one corner gathering dust. I have not yet encountered that scheme here in our place. However, owing to the traditional presence of some reliable traders from your country, it may not take a long time for it to catch on here. I am eager to trade some of my unused items for newer ones, things I may find useful for today.

The Great Exchange Offer of Big Bazaar. Yes, I have also seen it in newspaper. I live in Jaipur and there are at least three Big Bazaars in Jaipur. According to this scheme, we can take any old items like Newspapers, old kitchen vessels, plastic goods, old clothes, old tyres (tires), old furniture, etc. and can get exchange coupons. We can redeem these coupons to buy other new things from Big Bazaar. The Exchange price/cost of old newspaper is Rs. 25 per kg. (It is extremely good) The Exchange price/cost of old plastic is Rs.75 per kg. (It is extremely good) The Exchange price/cost of old clothes is Rs.200 per kg (It is extremely good) One piece of tyre (tire) will give us Rs.50. (Very good again)... and so on. They are paying good for exchange (than one with junk), and this campaign still has some time. I think I will go and check it out. There must be some hidden terms and conditions in it and we must find them out. Until and unless they earn some profit from us, they cann't give us anything. Some of the conditions are as follows: We can purchase any new thing and use these coupons for purchase of over Rs. 1000. We can use one coupon at a time. We have to use all coupons before this scheme ends. So, there are something in every sell-purchase agreement, which will ultimately benefit the seller only. Furthermore, people have started complaining about them. Please check: http://www.complaintsforum.in/big-bazaar-complaint-249372.html People are saying that in exchange, they have to pay more than market price. Please check: http://www.consumercomplaints.in/complaints/cheating-in-the-name-of-exchange-coupon-scheme-c352507.html

Hi Dear Nishant! What a great piece of response! I only heard about this scheme and seen people standing in queue at the Big Bazaar but never took any interest so far. Now a days they are even sending SMS to inform this on our mobile phones! But then I never had the details about the sales.! Now with the details provided by you it seems it is quite a good deal we can have by selling the unwanted products at an better rates than the 'Kabadi Wallahs' when we are selling these products! But I am really surprised to see the catch behind the scheme! I will go trough the link and having gone through it I will come back to you to have further discussion! Thanks for the response!

Yes, scheme looks great as the prices mentioned are very good. Even I was thinking that I should have stored all our old news papers (as we had just sell them to "kabadiwala" one month back) But this needs further investigation. I firmly believe that any seller cannot benefit customer and that too in this huge number. They are promising that "exchange truck" means they will come at our place to pick up the waste and will distribute coupons. Either the rates will be high as compared to market or definitely there is something else. It is a big chain with great marketing manager and thinkers. They cannot give benefit to customers by going into loss, Right?

Hi Dear Maean! Though I have seen many people doing it, till now I too never had any experience of getting any thing new for the old ones! In the recent past I had to change my Washing machine. I have repaired the old one only to give it to one of the supervisor on the farm and I purchased a new one! I think I could have changed my old washing machine with the new one! Thanks for responding!

I don't believe we have that here in the US, but I think it would be a great idea. Why not trade off some things I no longer wanted for something new. Some of my things may be very welcomed to someone else. This is a really great idea because sometimes we simply give away things and or pitch them and it could be a savings towards something new.

Hi Dear hardworkinggurl! I too agree with you that it is a great idea, instead of dumping the old things in our store rooms or dump yards we can sell them. this not only helps us in getting rid of them but we are making some money also from them , which other wise couldn't have become possible! This concept worked well here in India and people are getting many old things and getting them exchanged for some thing new! I think this scheme is still going on here and I will have to see if I have got any thing to dump to get some thing new! Thanks for responding!

That is pretty cool. We don't have that here as far as I know. What we have are 'sap meets' where people gather to exchange their things with things of other people. Money is not allowed so you really have to have a good item to get a good item in exchange. I wen to a swap meet twice and it is pretty fun. It's like shopping in a thrift store but the only difference is your stuff is the means of payment. The only trouble is when their is more than one person eying the item, that will be a tough call for the owner.

Hi Dear Tessa! 'Swap meet' this is an entirely a new concept for me! I think one must be having lot of fun apart from exchanging the things.we get an opportunity to look at various things and various types of people in this type of get together! How often it is held? How organises this meet? Do the organisers charge some thing for this service? How people they do come to know about such meets? Please respond so that my curiosity will get quenched! Thanks for responding!

I want to exchange my old things for the new,but I don't know how to.I sold my book on net but only for once.Old things depreciate a lot.Sometimes I DON'T want to sell my old things so cheap that I save my mind on selling.

Hi Dear Cyan! You can't expect great prices for your old things when you are disposing off! The people who buy these things normally treat them as scrap and they will pay you the money according to the scrap rate! So please don't be under wrong impression that you can have a deal when you are going to change your old things with the new one! Here all we can expect is that instead of throwing them away we can have some small money while helping them to get into recycled! Thanks for responding!

Hi Dear mcflurryxd! I too never had an idea about the rate, as I never had any experience of such exchange! But from the discussions and responses I think here in India also we are not getting very attractive rates! I think they are giving the rates of scrap, irrespective of the actual thing and its utility. Like an electric Kettle may fetch a scrap of plastic or a electronic equipment may get scarp of ebonite or some thing like that! Yes , no business man would pay from his pocket my dear friend! Thanks for responding!
