Too many vehicles, main cause of traffic problem?

Filipinos especially living in Metro Manila know how worse the traffic problem is in Manila and this problem is now starting to be observed in other parts of the country like Cebu City. It really makes tempers fly and ruins ones day. I personally think one of the causes (if not the main cause) is there are way too many vehicles on the road, especially public utility jeepneys and buses who do not stop in the proper areas. Can the government not approve licenses for new jeepneys or buses to operate anymore? I understand that this is a way of living for these drivers but if more vehicles travelling will slow down traffic to a crawl, then maybe there should be a limit, don't you think? And also, can't the Philippines follow the Singapore model where buses stop for a few seconds for loading and unloading passengers on designated stops?

I agree to your suggestion about public vehicles stopping only for a short time in a designated stations only. I guess if that would be followed there would be no buses falling in line and getting passengers all they want. I think some disciplines should be followed on the road to get minimized the traffic congestion in the metropolis.

Discipline indeed can help if we cannot reduce the number of vehicles. But sadly, discipline is hard to see from a lot of the PUV drivers.

I am daily bus and jeep commuter here and I am also disgusted that I could have reach my destination if these PUVs would be faster driving along and not stay at one place for too long which in turn create to slow the traffic and makes me late from going to my destination.

I think our country is hopeless because Filipinos do not know the word "discipline". We just have to live with it as we can not change the system anymore. For so many years back in my life, I have never seen that the country improves, instead it's getting worse.

This is sad. It does look that way but I try to be optimistic even just a little for our future generation's sake.

Another way to look at it is you just need more infrastructure. More roads, wider roads, more railways, bridges & tunnels instead of traffic lights. If the government won't do it or can't do it, then they should open it up to private investors or create systems where the two can work together. Then you can have toll roads & recover the costs for investors. You can have direct roads from one end of the island to the other that way without congestion in the middle, for a price of course! We have the e-tag system here that has been working successfully for a long time now where cars need not stop to pay the fee. Either your credit card gets debited or you get sent a bill in the post. These ideas will make it a win-win situation for everyone & cut pollution dramatically at the same time.

This boils down to our traffic management system. We dont have a good system, thus we do not have a good traffic flow. Vehicles stop wherever they want to stop, even if there are officers in sight. The officers are not doing their job and isnt being stringent in implementing the law. I agree that they limit giving out license to public transpos but given the volume of the riding public they may be insufficient if they will push that. I think they should develop more railways, since this is more cheaper and fast too.

Yes you are right about the railways. The current LRT and MRT are already congested too. We need more of them.

Here I feel Philippines should also follow Singapore in giving fast, cheap, reliable and accessible MRT and bus facilities. With such facilities most of the people will not prefer driving.

Traffic jams are caused by having too many jeepneys and buses on the roads. In addition, private cars are in abundance also. A rich family would sometimes have a lot of cars, a car to drive to school for each child. Besides, our roads are not that big enough to accommodate 6 cars in one line unlike those in other countries.

The reason why we have to much vehicles is because we are not good in manufacturing and research so we do not have our own automotive industry that we can really call our own, we get what other countries throw in the form of surplus or semi knocked down (SKD) , since Pinoys are good in repairing and " remedyo" we use our vehicles more than it's life span, understandable since most can't really afford to buy brand new or would rather cling to what they have as long as possible , simply no money to buy a new one. Yeah richer people would have 2 or more cars, add all this together plus the buses and jeeps and poor planning and the result is simply mayhem
