We are staying on a Farm. We have lot of Rats here. They are very notorious and create a lot of nuisance all over the place! They bite electric wires, wires connecting the computer etc. They make holes in the sofa set. They bite away the clothes and other things. They eat away or take away the soaps from Bath room. They bite the fruits and thus waste them. In nutshell they do as much harm as a rat can!
These Rats are very fat and look like wrestlers as they get ample of food on the farm. I think they just enter our place for a change and have nice time here, some times by creating a new family which is quite evident from the young ones roaming in the house without any fear!
We generally us rat traps to trap them! Having trapped these rats, I am not of the opinion to kill them! I take them some 10 to 15 kilometers away from my farm and leave them in fields so that they won't get back! This thing works for me till the new ones don't get entry into my house!
Now my question is what should we do with this rats who gets trapped in the cage? should they be killed or left out in the field or you suggest some thing else? Do you have any experience of the rat nuisance at your place!
Please respond! Thanks !

Hi Dear SSwallace! That is a good idea that these creatures can be used for the purpose of experimentation in schools! But then in India the dissection of animals in schools has been stopped long back a it is the cruelty on the animals! I can never of killing these cute looking devils/pests as whenever I look at them in the cage I feel they want to say something to me!
Thanks for responding!

Oh Yes, dear friend you have a valid point there, then I need to go to very long distance in search of such institutes, which is impractical as there must be some formalities and also some official procedures to be completed before giving such animals to them! And do you thin every time I catch a rat I ca run to such institutes?
Thanks for responding back!

I agree it is cruelty. However, I do think sometimes good can comes out of research. Possible cancer cures for example.

You should not be so kind to release the rats.
You should put them under the hot sun and let them die by themselves.
For me, I should pour the hot water on it. Later I should bury the rat.
Recently, few of the villagers were killed because the the rat's urine.
They went to a lake to search for a drowned person who were having a picnic at the lake side.
Few of them were sick after returning home and passed away.
Then the health depart found out the water contained the rat's urine.
In this lesson, if you don't kill the rats now, they will kill you someday.
You should take this opportunity to slow down the growing up of their population.

Get a ferret, or get some cats. Kill every rat you can because they carry disease and even Black Plague. Rats are terrified by ferrets and will leave a building if there is a ferret present. You will need several cats or a Terrier Dog if you don't have a ferret.
The terrier dog has a long history of hunting. There are many different breeds of terriers, each bred to hunt various species of vermin. Terriers will hunt and kill rats with enthusiasm. The terrier breed has been used to help control rats for centuries, helping masters keep crops and silage free of disease spreading pests. Teaching a terrier dog to rat is simple because the urge to hunt is bred into each and every terrier.

Hi Dear Barehugs! Here we don't have ferrets, though we have cats, I personally don't like cats as they are if not more but equally notorious as they gate crash our Kitchen to have their regular feasts! Many a times the milk kept in the containers after pasteurisation is consumed by these ones! Though we have few cats on the farm , we hardly encourage them your place for this reason!
Yes, terriers are the better dogs as they have natural instincts for hunting the rodents! But then I am already having 5 dogs at my place and it would be very difficult for me to get a new puppy and and raise him/her for this purpose as my old boys will create a scene at my place the moment thy see a new pup at my place! they are too possessive and they don't want any new entry int the family! It is but natural I believe!
Thanks for the response!

I do not have rat nuisances, but I can say that if I did I would have to find a way to kill them. Although, lol, I think I would be so afraid. I am afraid of little creatures like rats and mice.
But in all honesty sending them off means more will still visit. So I would try and find a way to be rid of them.

Hi Dear hardworkinggul! I am really happy that you don't have any rat nuisance! It is a big head ache! They van make you crazy not only by putting you in to monetary loss, but some times creating a lot of confusion in the family!
I was shouting at my son about my pen drive in which I stored some of my important data pertaining to my work and all of a sudden I found that the pen drive was missing,my son was constantly trying to explain me that he has no role in that incidence, but since I was in anger I used some harsh words against him, about which I really felt bad and apologised him, when I found that this pen drive of mine together with some other small articles were lying inside my sofa set in the form a nest made by the female rat!
Similarly when my brother visited our place his wrist watch was missing which later on we could trace behind our computer with the leather strap got damaged at several places!
This sort of things can create confusions and misunderstanding as we are having a full time servant at home, and any body would become suspicious if these things keep on happening now and then! Now understood the thing and keeping the traps at various places the nuisance has got reduced considerably!
In spite of all these, I really can't kill these creatures, as I feel pity and that is why I are trying to sent them to their natural habitat so that they will also perform their roles in this ecosystem! they do have natural enemies and their population will be kept under check by them!
Thanks for responding!

Dear A.K Rao,
Rat nuisance is not new in our part India, And personally I start seeing them on my breakfast table at my office in faridabad every day , luckily they have become part of my daily routine , if i don't see them day does not pass with happy note, specially the giant ones . but they never disturb me , i have given clear instructions in my office not to kill them and even feed them on every Wednesday , so that's working for me .

Hi Dear Kishu Vishal! You are right, they have become now part and parcel of our lives! In fact the rats at my place as I mentioned above, they visit our place to have some fun and nice time as they have no dearth of food on the big stud farm. They get all sorts of nutrition on the farm only! Here at my place they come to have some fruit, chocolates or some times some non veg, including some fresh/raw eggs which have in trays for our Dogs! Can any one believe that rats can easily break open eggs to eat them away? But then they actually do it! Of Course they waste lot of the egg while doing so!
The young rats when they have grown up they roam around our place as if they have obtained a license to do so they are not afraid of human beings and occasionally we get to see some interesting wresting between two siblings!
Though, we get irritated some times because of the nuisance they create, but honestly speaking, possibly we will miss them if we don't have any at our place as we are only two people in our family staying on the farm and a servant! My wife's most of the time revolves around these rats, sometimes she complains some times she appreciates the cuteness of the young ones, she instructs several times before we plan to leave the trapped rats to leave them, to be careful and not to kill them etc.
Thus for us also rats though are trouble makers, but have become part and parcel of our lives and there is nothing really we can do as we are definitely against killing them!
Thanks for responding!

For me its better to kill them, even you take them for a long miles, still, they're come back to where the foods are, or maybe they're breeding other rats so they can multiply, because of your action, you bring pest to all neighborhood that cause illness and pest so the best thing to do is, eliminate them.

Hi Dear Shellback! I fully agree with your views! I am a Vet by profession and understand the nuisance that these pests can create in our lives! But then the Humane side in me doesn't allow me to kill these rats! I know I am encouraging them to get their population increased, but the I believe that they have got their own natural enemies in the ecosystem and let them do their duties and why should I interfere in the ecosystem!
Though I agree that it is best thing to eliminate them, let me admit frankly I am too timid to kill them and justifying my consciousness!
Thanks for responding!

I did the same thing before. I set trap to trap rat. One day, i caught a small rat. I feel that it is so pity and i let it go. But after few days, it come back again and bite my housemate umbrella, (i think is the same rat because of the size).
I don't know what will i do when i got them again. But i will think is it a good idea to let them go? If they didn't come back to my house, will they go to others house?

Hi Dear Cmang! My idea is not sending them to other people houses! We have small jungle sort of thing near by our farm where there is lot of wild shrubbery and other vegetation and there is good rabbit population growing there, which indicates that these grounds can be ideal place for these creatures to live in a wild way! With that idea I am leaving them there!
Any how, I am really doubtful, if some one asks me to kill them, if I can really accomplish the job! Basically I don't like to do harm to the animals especially to the ones who are helpless and that is why I leave them, though knowing the fact that they can be dangerous some time in the future! I am helpless!
