I've read that the new batteries should be recharged at about 40% and that you shouldn't let it run down completely. But you shouldn't keep the battery in the computer if you keep the computer plugged in all the time. That will ruin a battery, they say.

normally it is a good idea to leave disharge totally your laptop battery before re-charge it in this way the battery can complete the entire cycle and re-start it can be good for long battery life!!

I usually use my laptop plugged or just with the battery alternately. I'm not sure if I remembered it right but I've read from my laptop's manual that it's good to drain the battery once a month to help keep its life. I think that's what the salesperson from the factory outlet told me as well. Maybe the data varies with different laptops so I suggest you check out your laptop's manual. If you bought your laptop without a printed manual (I had to look for mine on the internet but realized later it's actually in the installer CD ), you might be able to find it online.

My manual says to let it discharge once a month, I think it's to keep the battery "active" or something. Anyway, that's what I did with my old laptop and it's 3 years old, still with the same battery. So if it works for the old laptop, it should work again for the new one :-)I hope that helps.
PS - not sure if it's true or not, but a battery that has been sitting around doing nothing may leak after a certain period of time, perhaps a year. I don't understand how it works, though.

i Strongly suggest you too put full charge then unplug ur charger from the socket and use your laptop as much time as you wish...when it compltely discharges then you can charge again. If you dont do that..then ur battery capacity will decrease if you put it to the power supply even the charge it compltely full. You can use ur system while it is being charged but don't continue to put it in charging condition after it is compltely charged.

When I am using it I keep my charger on. When I turn it off I unplug it. I read different things. Some say to let it run down then charge it some say if you keep it charged all the time that's bad too. I think I've heard that of you keep it charged 24/7 it's harder for it to keep it's charge and the battery is run down faster. I've had my laptop for about three years and my batter is fine haven't had to get a new one so far.

There's a goldern rule that I always abide by when it comes to laptop batteries. So many people mention that their laptop batteries run out so quickly and that there's no life in the battery anymore. Well, when using a laptop, when you are at home, remove the battery completely and just rely on the power supply. By doing this your protect your battery. You then only use the battery when you need it like when you are away from home and out and about for example. Before preparing to hit the road charge your battery up to full capacity. Not many people will want to do this but I think it definitely prolongs the life of your battery.
I'm not saying that you shouldn't rely on your battery whilst at home afterall, you don't want to be stuck in one position next to the mains socket! I think it's a bad idea to keep your laptop plugged into the wall all day with the battery inside. This will definitely ruin your battery over time. Andrew
