It's Spring here and baseball Spring training has started. This time of year I always remember that years ago, a guy I knew saw a TV listing for "It Happens Every Spring". He took off from work to watch what he thought was the old movie starring Ray Milland as a chemistry teacher who accidentally gets some chemicals mixed together to make a formula that repells wood. Naturally (tic) he uses this to become a major league pitcher applying the liquid to baseballs that magically jump away from bats. I know sounds corny. At any rate, the guy I knew was disappointed because, the TV show was about filing tax returns, not the movie. However, this makes me ask the question or questions, what is(are) your favorite baseball movies or what is(are) your favorite sports movies? These can be new movies or old ones like "It Happens Every Spring".

I'm not at all a baseball fan but I love A League of their Own. Maybe because my sorority adopted the song Madonna wrote for it (This Used to be My Playground) or because I have a weird fascination with anything that happened during World War II but it's definitely (one of) my favorite sports movie(s).

I have reservations about a League of Their Own because it trivializes womens' professional baseball and it is historically inaccurate. It suggests that the major leagues shut down and that their was no male baseball. Although many or most of the major leaguers wound up in the service, some serving in combat, baseball kept going, with older players and 4F's. (There was even a one armed outfielder.) The movie says that the women's league lasted for only one year. That is also not true as the league lasted for a number of years. The baseball hall of fame has a small display for the league.

My favorite baseball movie would have to be THE NATURAL with Robert Redford and Glenn Close.

For me, I loved the Natural because of the color in the movie. The story is a bit hokey though, kind of like It Happens Every Spring.

I'm still a fan of Remember the Titans. I do like the Blind Side though.

Wow, there are so many greta sports movies. My favorite, too, is A League of Their Own. I love baseball and a formaer softball player. :-) Rudy is a great one about an underdog college football player. Hoosiers, which is about a college basketball team. The Blind Side is GREAT! It's sort of a sports movie. I thin kthe football player from the movie may still be playing. Field of Dreams and Tha Natural are two classics. I think I could go on for days... :-)
