Ever since last year i've been working hard signing papers after papers and filling out forms and turning in a lot of things such as my income, my social security card, my birth certificate and going back and forth to get more papers (no wonder i'm starting to hate paper-pushing bureaucracies). I've also been signing up with multiple low-income apartments that accept my SSI income until I could take only one offer, but I finally got the keys to my new apartment earlier this week, and my new DSL cable internet's been installed today on 3-4-2011! I finally found my independence!!!
The rent is only $46.00, I paid my lights and utilities, but i'm a bit concerned because my older sister told me that it's a high-crime area, and there were shootings and a lot of drama although i'm not familiar with this place. As I said, I got a weapon to protect myself, but still, this has me worried, and i'm thinking of staying for one year so I can find a new apartment to stay in that's more safer albeit costing a few dollars more. I'm new to renting apartments and a lot of things related to it, so I don't know where to start after this.
Is there anyone that can help out a first-timer like me?

Hello DuoMaxwell,
First off, you always check the surrounding area before you even consider moving into a place. You have to what you are getting yourself into. Now, just because someone says its a bad neighborhood doesn't mean it is. No matter where you live (good area or not) always be mindful of your surroundings. Do some homework on the area and areas around it ( Day and Night ) before you move into your next place. Great Post...

Hi,
It is always feel good to have your own space to stay and
full of freedom, but it is good to find the right place to
stay. Is it really a high crime area? Then it is better to
be more cautious while you are out there.
Since you already rent the place, just stay there for temporary and
if you manage to get a better place, then move out from here.

If there are no children I think waiting one year could be okay. Just make sure to watch all your moves as others will be also.
Next time you are looking for an apartment, I would suggest to do a couple things:
1. Go online and research the community newspaper for any recent and or past crimes in the area.
2. Drive around the block couple times during the day and couple times at night so you can get a feel of what the neighborhood is like.
3. Maybe knock on some of the neighbors door and ask how the neighborhood is like.
4. If there are any nearby businesses you can ask them as opposed to number 3 above if they are not willing to speak to you.
Best of luck and sometimes, you just do not know what it is going to be like until you actually move in, but getting familiar with neighborhoods does help.
