Can you believe in that? The news of a recently found letter from Gene Roddenberry shows what he actually intended to do. It is so funny and I can understand why, Spock is way more famous than Kirk, but the two together is just awesome:

He may not qualify as the main character in the series, but he has a very integral role all the same. You cannot realistically consider any role to be main one because the programme does not tend to revolve around a single character but the crew as a whole. The same goes for each spin off that has appeared, such as Start Trek The Next Generation or Voyager.
There are a couple of central characters in each series, but none that would be of real interest without the remainder of the crew.

Well if it isn't Asylum with a well written, proper grammar and all, response that I love. It is absolutely true. The show rarely had a main character. As did the subsequent shows that followed. Star Trek has always focused on a composite of characters for the overall series and the show would not have worked otherwise. The only time it would focus on a single character is from episode to episode, but the main character was different each time. This reigns true in all of the latter shows as well. Sometimes the main character was actually two characters equally sharing the story. For example, the famous episode " Amok Time " where the episode revolves around a story of Spock, but the writings and dialogue is very well split between both characters as neither are 2nd to the other. This sort of split main character is shown in Voyager as well during the episode " Futures End ", when Tom and Harry are stuck on Earth and running around with Sarah Silverman.

Hi dear, thanks for coming back.
Yes, Spock is really, really fun and intersting.
As much as I'm fascinated for the elves in Lord of the rings, I'm fascinated for the volcans, because of Spock. That planet and its people must be really intersting. I think I have fascination for evolved beings.

In the pilot for the show, Spock was merely the science officer. Second in command was a woman, played by Majel Barrett. The network vetoed a female first oficer so Barrett, who was Roddenberry's mistress was forced to play the nurse. Kirk was also not the first Captain. Jeffrey Hunter's Pike was the captain in the pilot. I believe Jack Lord (McGarrett of Hawaii 5 O) was also considered for he roleof the captain before Shatner. Also, the actor originally asked to play Spock was Martin Landau.

Haven't you seen the J.J. Abrams-produced STAR TREK-reboot? Spock ALWAYS WAS/WILL-BE the main character in STAR TREK!

Well Star Trek was a Flop when it Aired in the Mid 1960's as Mr.Spock Leonerd Nimoy was the only Stand Out Character. Capt Pike (Jeffery Hunter) wasn't Popular as the Enterprise's Captain. So Capt James T. Kirk (William Shatner) was Added and the Rest is History

I think Spock put something into Star Trek that and if he was not present star trek would not have lasted or been as popular as it was. Lennard certainly maintained his image in the series and stayed with it in movies as well even to the last, while Kirk branched off into other roles, yes.
