Reasons behind Vegan-ism?

I saw some videos of the way the animals are treated in big company heard canals. And it just made me sick to my stomach. It has been nearly a year since I have eaten any meat or dairy. I have recently been having cravings for chicken and have found that Whole Foods caries meat products that were not subjected to cruelty and am thinking about eating their products. I was just wondering what reasons some others have for choosing the vegan lifestyle.

Welcome to My Lot & congratulations on going a year without meat or dairy.
I understand you abstained from these two products due to wanting to help stop animal suffering. Other reasons are: health & nutrition benefits, ecology & environmental benefits, stopping world hunger & to pursue spiritual practice. There are even more reasons still, like it being much cheaper, it tastes much better, you get to eat safer food & the list goes on.
Eating meat is against the universal principle of not wanting to be killed. We ourselves don't want to be killed, & we ourselves don't want to be stolen from. Now, if we do that to other people, then we are acting against ourselves, and that makes us suffer. Everything that you do against others makes you suffer. You can not bite yourself & you shouldn't stab yourself. In the same way you should not kill, because that is against the principle of life. It would make us suffer, so we don't do it. It doesn't mean we limit ourselves in any way. It means we expand our life to all kinds of life. Our life will not be limited within this body, but extended to the life of animals & all kinds of beings. That makes us grander, greater, happier, more noble & limitless.
If you have cravings for chicken, there are now some excellent fake meats, including whole chickens made from soy protein, etc that you may buy from Asian Grocery Stores, etc. They can be prepared to taste just like the real thing. Once you have eaten out at a pure vegan restaurant, I'm sure you will find that not only is it cheaper, but better tasting & better for you. Whether the animal was "killed humanely" is debatable, but the very act of slitting its throat causes it to release harmful chemicals & hormones into its meat, if we're to speak in measurable scientific terms.

I love the taste of meat, I was brought up on meat but I too was nearly sick when I saw how they treat animals, I have been a vegetarian for years now because I just can't be a part of cruelty..You would think the least they could do is treat the animals well and make the whole process be painless as possible, we owe that to them... lets hope we don't come back as animals we have treated this way...
