Waiting

I hate waiting for things. I tend to read a book if I'm waiting and normally carry one in my bag for just such times, but today I'm just not in the mood so I'm pottering around on the net instead. I have a friend who never goes anywhere without knitting or tapestry to do. How about you? What do you do when you're waiting for something? Do you use the time profitably?

I think watching TV is wasting time, but it depends what you watch I suppose! Magazines are good for waiting as the articles are short so don't take too long.

I seem to spend hours waiting in the car. Watching people is quite fun if we're in the town centre, but no fun if there's nothing to see.

I used to do crosswords but these days I am writing down things to look up onmy lap top and, this is so sappy, I just think about my guy. Time passes when I am thinking about him!

I always mean to bring a book if I know I'll be waiting but I usually forget it. I spend most of my waiting time talking to others who are waiting! It passes the time in an interesting way and cheers everyone up. Another favorite way of mine to pass the time is to read waiting room magazines--I'm too cheap to subscribe to any magazines but I really enjoy reading them.

I hate waiting room magazines! They always seem to be Hello style, showing the homes of celebrities I've never heard of. I'm hoping that my new kindle will means I'm never short of a book. It's slim enough to live in my handbag.

I used to spend hours waiting at airports and always carried a book with me. Usually I bought it at the airport but would have decided beforehand what I would buy. I love the First Lady Detective Agency books and they are just right for a couple of hours wait. Also, sometimes in the UK airports you can buy books not yet released on the High St. They have soft rather than hard covers but there's a degree of one upmanship to be reading a book that nobody else has yet! I do have an iPod Touch, but tended not to use it for listening to music except if I can't sleep late at night. I use it for web surfing and I have Kindle books and Apple Books on there as well.

I love the books but I didn't enjoy the TV series. Have you worked out how you will get to Heathrow tomorrow yet?

I never managed to get into those books. I used to carry the first one around in my car for months, but nothing ever seemed to happen and I'd get bored and forget what I'd been reading about and have to start again. I never progressed beyond about the midway point of book one. The Kindle will be great for hanging about waiting. It's slim enough that it can live in my handbag and I need never be caught without a book again. Once I've got myself right in front of the gate at the airport I relax a little and can read again, but for train travel and when I first arrive at the airport I'm too jittery about the possibility of missing my service to concentrate on reading.

Hi GreenMoo, I guess this is never before discussed topic. There are a lot variety of waitings. Waiting for your guest to come, the bus to come, the train, guests and so and so forth. The most irritating wait is you are waiting for the person who needs you and has not reached you on time. If I am to wait for something or some body more than the limit I quit the place. And for normal waiting I usually pick up a news paper and try to fill up the cross words or if I carry a halfway through read book resume from where I last stopped.

Personally I find the worst sort of waiting to be waiting for public transport.

Yes, you wait and wait and on its arrival you find the vehicle jam packed. This is called double torture.

I hate waiting too and I try to remember to take a book if I know I'm going to be waiting. It's handy to have something to read on long trips too . Also in case of breakdown. I find as well as passing the time it takes your mind off any problems and keeps the stress levels down...this in the case of a breakdown when you have to wait for the tow truck and are wondering how much the repairs are going to cost and how you will get home.

Keeping a book in your handbag is always a good idea, then you never get left with nothing to do.

Depends on where I'm going and what I have to do when I get there. I often take some cross-stitch project along with me, sometimes a book.

Cross stitch is a good use of waiting time. I suppose you can just do a few stitches here and there and it soon adds up.

oh I'll mostly just look around a bit and wait...or if I have to wait for an exam I'll just sit and revise, thou I've been thinking about bringing a book already as well since the net on my mobile is paid and I'd use all my funds, either way killing is always killing me, I just hate it, specially at doctors, but who doesn't, right.

A book is a good idea. At least it takes the mind off the waiting for a bit.

I mostly hate when I have to wait at home for a phone call or a delivery driver. I used to catch my self pacing back and forth. Then I moved to browsing the web or rearranging something in my house. What I found that helps pass the time for me now is not really anything constructive but I buy those crossword puzzle books the ones that have easy, medium or hard puzzles in them. I feel less exhausted after the wait ha ha. For some reason it passes the time effortlessly for me.

Waiting for deliveries has to be the worst sort of waiting.

It depends upon the place where I am waiting. If I am at school, I go to the library and enjoy myself reading. :) If I am at the mall, I do window shopping or if ever I get tired walkin', I sit in a bench or take some shots using my digital camera. If I am at home, I instantly open my laptop and begin surfing anything to amuse me, well, most of the times, I chat with my friends. ;) And know what, waiting--- the ability of people to wait for things without ending up totally messed up is what I have practiced well. And I can say that if you are still waiting for what you are waiting for, it's better if you find yourself be amused and not bored, maybe eat something, or just sleep. :P

Yes, the place you are waiting plays a part. But also how long you are waiting for.

Well, if somebody is going to keep me waiting for more than an hour, and not to mention if he is just a not so important person in my life, then I should better move on and cancel whatever we are gonna do. ;P But if it is my best friend that would keep me waiting for thirty minutes then I would go probably to their house screaming her name. hahahaha.. :D i guess i've done it before. :D

If I have to wait around and there are a lot of people nearby, I people-watch! I find the human race totally fascinating and not just because I am an artist. I try to tune into them if I can to improve my psychic skills, if I have time. Of course I don't make it obvious, and no-one would ever know that the ageing, grey-haired lady in the corner is a Medium! ;)

Hi GreenMoo, Hope all is well with you as I haven't logged in for a while. For me it depends on what I am waiting for, if in a doctors surgery I will chat to others or flick through the trashy mags they have not really reading as most are adverts, if however it is for someone to arrive at my home I will tend to be online playing a game on facebook before they get there. In a queue I am fairly patient and people watch. Huggles. Ellie :D

Waiting is not one of my strong points, I always get real jittery when I have to wait. It's nerve racking. I always have my iPhone with me so I go on there and surf the internet, read my email or play a game. I feel that being pre-occupied makes the wait seem shorter.
@GreenMoo (11834)

I think that's why I hate travelling so much. Too much hanging around makes me jittery too.

I am one of those who does not like waiting, time to me is consuming, but people who believes in horoscopes said is because I am VIRGO. Waiting is killing me, I do not want any one who says to me at such such time will meet and she/he is not there I just give the 5 minutes more after that I just leaving the place go back to my place. Waiting realy is not ok as I am always thinking of something I should be doing instead of waiting, guys its not me thank you
