What do you do when you see someone texting while driving?

Your driving along and you notice a car in front swerve ever slightly in and out of its lane. You think the person is asleep or something, maybe even under the influence. Cautiously, you approach closer to the car, you notice the person driving the car has in his/her hand a cell phone. The person is not asleep or drunk, but texting while driving. When the car swerve, his/her attention is on the phone, not the road. This scares me, I'll glance over try to get the person's attention, but the person most likely will never notice me. I've actually called in drivers before, but never really know if anything is actually done about it. I truly believe that people don't intentionally decide to go out that day to potentially hurt or even kill someone. But seriously, how could you not think that it could be a possibility when you're not giving all your attention to the road.. If and I know most probably have seen or known someone or even done it themselves drive while texting. What should or could you do about it?

This might sound harsh, but if when I am driving and someone swerves in and out of their lane consistently I start blarring my horn. I look at it this way...if they are asleep they will wake up, if they are drunk they will pull over hopefully and get off the road...and if they are texting they will feel like the moron that they are for doing such a stupid and careless thing to do while driving. It is true that if a person texts while driving it is the same as driving under the influence. Because for some reason they seem to think about the new bit of gossip they have to spread is more important than their lives and anyone elses who drives.
I do support the ticketing for people driving while texting, but because it is hard for a police officer to prove that they were texting they have now decided to make it a law you can get pulled over for even using your phone unless you use a hands free device. Which poses a problem for me because I do not use headsets while I use the speaker phone on my cell. And then make matters worse there has been takls of cell companies disabling phones while driving...except for in emergency purposes...which we all know you can plan for them right...that's why it's called emergency purposes. Like I said it is the morons who decide put others lives at stakes...forget their own...who know are causing the possibility of laws that take away our rights as individuals to decided whether we want to be a responsible driver or not.
Oh and I do take this personal because twice already I have almost been sideswiped by some ignorant teenagers who thought thier lives were more important....and all i can say is lawsuit heaven to people who do get in accidents with these idiots. Sorry for the sarcasm.

It's probably like drinking and driving, until it happens to them or someone they love it doesn't exist to be a problem. Sad but true in a lot of cases.

You're right for some reason some people seem to think they are above the rest and think it will never happen to them. I love the ones that says, "I can multi-task" Right!! What they have two eyes so they're sooo special that they can have one eye and one hand on the road while the other eye and hand on the phone texting???? Seriously, How many more people have to be hurt before these people get it???

hi there. i actually don't seeing people texting while driving, especially my sister, she texts while driving and it annoys me even more when i see her smile while reading messages hehehe, it really annoys me because she is driving with me and her son in the car and she is supposed to focus on the road. but she just never listens, and that is the problem.

Hi
I really get irritated when i see someone on the phone while driving. It is a dangerous habit. Texting SMS while driving is even more dangerous than speaking, whilst driving. It not only jeopardises your life but also puts others life in danger.

Honestly, you couldn't do about it, unless you are on the passenger's seat that way you can tell the driver about it. But carefully they are still glancing on the road. All driver's knew this but they can't help it if someone texts them maybe its emergency or what, but drivers do know that they will have an accident if they will not focus on driving.

I see many of them talking in phone mostly, not texting while driving. This texting message will mostly occur in cars not in bikes so we cant see it as the windows may be closed.

Usually when I noticed someone texting while driving, I stay away from them as far away as possible. I may make a turn just to get away from them. I don't even answer my phone if I am driving because I don't want to be distracted...how much more about texting. Even with my husband, I don't like it that he will spend even 30 sec on a phone call while driving. I told him, we can stop and park if it is his office that is calling and he really needed to answer it. I keep on reminding him that little distraction is way too much and we got 3 precious babies in the car that is far more worth that whoever it is calling or texting.

I can get irritate, frustrated and annoyed when i see someone is texting and driving at the same time. That is just an accident waiting to happen. You risk your life and the life of others when you text and drive. if you need to be texting, pull over and do it or let someone else do the driving! We will all be safer for it!

I would dread to see anything like that. I hate it when people answer their phones or text while driving. It's very dangerous to do so. I have seen some gruesome videos about texting while driving and they're really awful. It's a good thing that more and more people are aware of this. I hope more could be made aware of the dangers of such actions.

If I am not acquainted with the person, I would have to say that the only thing I can do is hope them the best and that one day they will realize that it is dangerous to do that.
See if I don't know the person they may get offended and retaliate somehow. Surely they have to know that what they are doing is not safe, but still do it anyway because until a problem happens they would never imagine it could happen to them.

Hi cmecu,
I would probably call an emergency line for traffic violators. There is a law against the practice and they should be properly reprimanded.

Maybe keep away from him is the best choice. You can't draw the driver's attention as well to stop him.So you can do nothing but just to protect yourself.

The only thing you can do, is avoid being close to that vehicle, and call it in to the police, as a driver that is swerving from lane to lane. IF you call it in, be sure to give a good description of the vehicle, location, and what direction of travel is. Keep in mind, depending on where you live, and how many or few officers are on duty, they might not be able to respond. There is a very good video on youtube, just search, 'driving and texting' It is a very good video that was actually a public announcement in the UK. And it is very realistic. As a first responder, we will be getting called out to more calls involving texting. What most people don't stop to consider is..........if they are texting and have a wreck, how many people's lives will be affected. Not only the victims, but their families, friends, the responders who have to deal with the incident.
DON'T TXT AND DRIVE!!

Well the other day I saw something completely scary. It was night time, dark out and raining. I was passing a car who was veering into and out of my lane. So I got nervous to pass them but I finally did and when I looked the woman was TEXTING. It was raining so hard that I could hardly see and this lady was texting and driving in the dark in the rain.
Normally when I see something like that I honk at them, tends to get their attention and scare them just enough. But on this night I didn't honk because I thought she might drive off the road!
