Have you ever accidentally bitten your lips? I asked because I just bit mine today, ouch, it happens once in a while and sometimes the sore could be so painful that it's difficult to eat, what do you use to treat the condition, seems to be more painful there than if it happened in another part of the body.

Hi, Yes,it happened to me sometimes while I am eating some food and of course, I was like jumping up and down because of the pain. I do remembered some old folks telling me,if you bite your own lip accidentally,it means your body is heaty. I am not sure how true it is. To cure the part of the lip that was bitten,apply petroleum jelly and drink plenty of water.

If it can make you jump, then that must be a very strong bite. In your country old folks say it's heaty feeling, in my country old folks say "somebody remembers you" so you get teased especially if you are single, yes petroleum jelly, some people in my country apply potash alum or what we call "tawas"

I have done that, it really hurts, but I bite the inside of my cheek more often that hurts a lot also. I use an over the counter antibiotic salve and it helps but this can only be used on the outside of the lips. I rinse my cheek with hot salt water it hurts but helps heal faster.

yeah pat, and it seems it could get infected there faster because of the micro-organisms in our saliva, and no way we could put a band-aide strip or something LOL

Ouch yes I have and it normally happens if I chew gum. I guess I chew so fast that somehow I catch my lip. So I have been in pain way too often that I rarely will chew any gum.

I did not mention, but when it does happen I do not use anything and in a day or so it gets better, but so painful.

yeah if my bitting is not in proper action, it is very painful and sometimes hard to cure will take a week, but if sore the best medicine is salt scrabbing around the sore up to the blood coming, painful but effective. see you around

I have never bitten my lips but have bitten my gill.The moment the gill was bitten ,a blood blister came out.It hindered me from eating.If the blood blister was broken,It was usually infected then I should have a hard time of it.As soon as I had a meal It made me be in pain.It took me more than a week to recover from it.

hi friend, sorry but may I ask what is the gill? Is it the inside of the mouth? Maybe we just have different terms in English. Anyway that's terrible if a blister develops, so hard to eat and in a week you can lose a lot of weight

Hi louievill, You're right, if you accidentally bitten your lips hurts.. I have experienced that several times before.. And I don't have any medicines or any kinds of method to treat.. All I do is to take a bath everyday and in few days it will be gone. It works for me, I hope it works for u too!
@louievill (28851)

Yes taking a bath is old folk remedy in our country, similar to the one who said the body is heaty in their country, think in Malaysia because we are neighbors and seem to come from the same Malay race,yes we were all one people before if the colonizers did not come, so tales were handed down from generation to generation.

Yes I bite my and pick my lips lips often mostly I just skim the lips to pick off the little bits of skin. I don't bit them to to point of being painful. I have drawn blood but not usually. Actually since typing this I'm biting my lips now.

Hi Louievill, No i have not ever bitten off my lips even accidently but yes i have bitten off inside of my cheeks many a times. It has cut off my cheeks from inside and ulcers are formed. Yes it is painful and first thing to do is not eat spicy food because spices can cause pain in the ulcer and also there are many lotions and creams are available which would numb your ulcer for say 15 to 20 mins, and you can easily eat in that time.

There are two others like you who posted that bite the inner cheek more often, I think that's harder because it is harder to reach and make the medication stay because it moves more and the position is vertical,yes numb it and just enough time to eat

It's really painful that sometimes I blame myself why I was careless enough and now I have to suffer, small mistake with dire consequences, hahaha

I have experienced the same thing too in the past. I accidentally bite my lips when I eat and when I eat so fast that I get to bite my inner lips. It's painful but I usually just drink lots of water. I don't do anything with it but it reminds me to be careful the next time around.

Yes the body or the mind has the ability to remember especially when it experiences pain, records it and avoids it when a similar situation arises.

i just don't do anything each time i bite my lips and it will always get better the next day.

Yes there are also people who trust their body to heal itself, good answer
13 Mar 11
When I accidentally bite my lips I just let it heal by itself. This process takes about three days for me to bear the pain of a bruised lip. This also serves a warning to my body to alert my brain in the future for me not to bite my lips because it would surely cause pain.

Good another self healer, when the body is fast to heal itself, it tells very much the state of our health

It was happened to me before and it was bleeding so i get an ice cubes and put it on my lips but there sitll pain especially when eating therefore untill to healed i wont eat sour food or salty food to lessen the pain.
@louievill (28851)

Good you placed ice cubes, yeah when there is bleeding there is danger that it could get infected and have pus, yes, more painful with salty or sour foods but seems to heal it also.

Biting your mouth is painful because you have tons of nerve endings there that transmit the pain to your brain. I agree with an above post - a warm mixture of salt and water rinsed in the mouth should help heal it, it may sting if you do it however.
@louievill (28851)

nerve endings , terrible, why does it have to be there?, yeah any wound that comes into contact with a salt solution would surely sting.

hi louievill I think we all have done that occasionally and it really does hurt. I dab a little hydrogen peroxide diluted a bit on with a swab and it both kills bacteria and helps with the pain. what I hate is when I do that then it swells and I do it again. ouch.oragel used for toothache pain also stops the pain at once but numbs it a bit. I have used that too as its safe to use.there are a lot of nerves in our lips more than in most places on our bodies.
@louievill (28851)
• Philippines
8 Mar 11
Yeah I agree, there's a lot of nerve endings there so it hurts so much, yes we have the tendency to bite it again on the same spot especially when it's swelling, guess whats good and safe for the tooth could be used there too cause the bacteria is basically the same.

hi, yes, I remember when I was in kindergarten, I bumped my lip head on with another kid's headand the school nurse placed gentian violet, don't know if they still do or have that, think it was also Iodine based, is there no danger of applying Iodine on that part?Guess it's oral preparation so it must be safe, well gentian violet really looks awful and all the other kids would tease you

Not lips but my tongue. The worst happened a few monts ago, we were eating andoks and while talking i bit by tongue really really hard it went numb. I thought it was severed since it bleed a lot. I didn't let my friends know about it but i lost all appetite that day. I look at the mirror and there's a black line a few centimemters from the tip, where the teeth marked. I think the numbness stayed for a few days.

The tongue, oh God thats more painful, so my Idea is it's like a mind slip cause the body is so designed in theory not to hurt it self, but when we get engrossed with something like Andok's chiken(yummy, my favorite too), it seems to become off guard, glad your ok now

Yes I have bitten my lip before and yes it does hurt. What I do more often is bite the inside of my cheek when I'm eating and that hurts also. It makes it harder to eat. I would rather bump my leg than bite my lip or cheek.
@louievill (28851)

8 Mar 11
Yeah cause if we get a bump or a cut in other parts of our body it so much easier to put a bandage or some kind of support not to mention worry on the toxicity of anything we have to apply. Another one posted biting the inside cheek more like you, that seldom happens to me, it's always the lip, could it be the structure of our teeth or mouth or something.

8 Mar 11
yes, many times. I did not cure if that happened, the pain is there but after several hours, the pain will disappear, no big deal. Maybe, you eat too much, my friend. My advise is, eat slowly and don't be always in a hurry while eating even if you are busy in doing some computer works. Regards to you and your lovely wife.

hi friend, no I eat slowly, maybe when the food is delicious, did you see me eat when we were in the pc? Maybe you mean drinking. We have a saying in the Philippines that when you bite your lips somebody remembers you, maybe it's my wife, ya friend do drop by if you have time, thanks for the response.
