Does the END justify the MEANS??

I am sure this question is asked a hundred thousand times a day all over the world. I am fairly certain that the answer is situational. I was talking with my friend the other day about it, he presented the following scenario,
There is a free truck at the top of the mountain.. Bob has been hiking this mountain for the last a week straight to get to this truck and is a mere 2 days away from it as he took the gradual route because there was no other competition. Tony hears of this and climbs up the steepest rockiest cliff. cut up, bruised and exhausted his route only takes him 1 day. needless to say Tony has a new truck. did Tony screw Bob... some would say yes, look at the time he invested. I on the other hand would say... tough Luck.
Yes, he did give me his permission to share it. First, what do you think about this particular situation? Second, are there examples you can think of where the END does justify the means? How about where the END does not justify the Means?
Please, don't kill Hitler, because for all we know, someone worse could have taken his place

i would say... if you have a goal in mind... you think of all possible scenarios and risks and take the plunge anyway
if i need to wait for the outcome to be in my favor, i'll do that. but, if immediate action is needed... then you can bet i'll risk being cut up and bruised to get the symbolic prize at the top of that mountain hehehe
of course i'll also have to devise ways to lessen the mistakes along the way

You would flout the hard work of a friend, in order to beat them to the prize? At least that is how Bob would feel I would imagine.
I would, I felt it was Bob's fault for speaking of his plans. If he had of kept his mouth shut, Tony would never have heard about it.
Cheers.
Mistakes happen, avoid them by reading of, and learning from people that have been there. Start with Think and Grow Rich, then Biographies of people in your field. If you are a pioneer, keep careful record, you will make tonnes of cash, writing a book, about the mistakes you made and how to avoid them.

Now, if it was a friend that I was trying to compete against in a situation like what you've described, I would not compete against a friend because I not only want the best for myself, I also want the best for my friends as well. That said, if I was competing against someone that I didn't know, then I would try to beat them in any way that I was able to. I know that might not sound nice, but that is honestly the way that I would react.
