The Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary defines the term "gifted" as:
1. Having great natural ability
2. Revealing a special gift.
"Gifted" children have been defined as those "who by nature of outstanding abilities are capable of high performance". The term "outstanding abilities" refers to general intellectual ability, specific academic aptitude, leadership ability, ability in the visual or performing arts, creative thinking , or athletic ability.
Most gifted children display a higher rate of concentration and memory capacity. There is no typical gifted child, for particular talents and social environments give rise to varying personality patterns. Achievement patterns also vary. Differences among them will be found, even when they are grouped together. Some are very strong in one subject and weak in others. The gifted mathematician may be an average reader, the gifted artist may be poor in mathematic and the early reader may lack the ability to organize time and materials.

I am a teacher and have worked as a gifted education specialist. I do believe that every child has gifts, but there are some children whose gifts cannot be nourished in a normal educational environment...they need gifted education.
I believe in the definition of Joseph Renzuli's theory of giftedness as far as identifying kids who should receive special gifted education...he sais that gifted children have 3 qualities that make them worthy of this attention...high ability, high creativity, and task commitment. He looked at people in the past who we consider gifted and came up with this formal of giftedness...these were qualities of people in the past who did amazing things.

hank you for your attention. I have some questions that maybe you could help me.
1. if our children are gifted, whether we should give more attention to him?.
2. I've heard that gifted children tend to be hyperactive and even autism. is it true?

If your children are gifted, you need to be sure they are challenged in school, or they will get into trouble trying to come up with ways to challenge themselves! If the schoolwork is not enough, you need to work with them at home to challenge them. One thing you can do that will really help them is to travel a lot. They will see that there are so many possibilities they hadn't thought of, especially if they explore other cultures. A gifted child is probably not going to be happy staying within the social rules of any culture, so it is good for them to experience more possibilities.
Yes, I would say that gifted children often appear to be hyperactive. They are bored and need something that will consume their interest to keep them still. As far as autism, I have seen gifted and non-gifted children with autism. The saddest situations are when the autism is very pronounced and parents/teachers have a feeling the child is gifted, but the testing does not show it because the child cannot communicate it.

Gifted - because they have the talent without learning from formal studies/school.
I am taking my child as an example.
My daughter learn to play the "birthday song" using her xylophone toy when she's 4 years old and nobody taught her.
She just hum the song and keep patting the xylophone until she got the tunes right.
When she reaches 8 she insisted to play the piano,so we bought her a small one.
She also plays songs without any notes.
When she's 10 years old,she plays the flute, same thing no one teaches her to use the instrument.
Don't you think it's a gift?
She also excels in her studies and got best grades with Science ,Math and English subjects.
Now,she's 17 years old and a full academic scholar in college taking up "Mass Communication Literary Arts and Media"
I can say that,my daughter is lucky to have talent as a gift.

My daughter is very smart but I dont think that she is gifted. If she was gifted I am sure the school would notice it and have her tested. She loves to learn and is a very smart little girl but her abilities are not so exceptional that I would think she was gifted just smarter then most in her grade.
