This is a question that makes me think. If we spend so much time watching TV shows is that doing anything for us? If so does it matter what you are watching movies or educational show? I tryed a experment in this field and what i found out was really surprising to me. What i did i turned off the cable and took out the raidos in the cars. Me and my family went 1 month without anythingbut the internet. Here is what happen the kids grades went UP in school and my wife started reading again and i started to be more focus on things more than normal. What does the mylot community think?

TV is a time killer if one becomes glued to it all the time. This is what makes one especially "dumber". Homeworks are not done, home chores are neglected and if the shows watched are inappropriate for a person's age, teaches wrong values. On the other hand, there are educational shows and other shows where we or our children learn something. Bottom-line is I think we should not just let our children watch whatever they want whenever they want. We should not be glued to our TV sets all the time to the point that we are accomplishing nothing.

Of course,TV can do both good and bad on us. We can learn lots of things from good TV programs, while if we are so hooked on TV series, especially those soap opera, our health will get worse. It is especially bad for those kids. Kids spending on TV all days will develop poor eyes and fat body.
If we try to learn things from TV programs, we can make us smarter and quick in thinking; But if we focus on those useless redundant soap opera, it will do nothing good to our wisdom.

TV doesn't make people smarter or dumber, people are smart or dumb to begin with without any relation to TV. The thing is that if you spend a lot of time watching tv you won't spend time doing other things, like reading or studying, for example, but that has nothing to do with intelligence, that is adquiring new knowledge.
If a person says that has become dumber because of watching TV, what I have to say is that this person has just became lazier.

It makes everyone dumber.
First because your being used by it, they can say that there was an atack in your country but nothing really happened thats the first.
Second when your watching a movie or a series you lose your imagination because your mind gets used to not have to think on new ideas when you have something that makes them for you.

Its called the idiot box but if you really think about it, there are some really informative and education programs out there. I would say that spending a couple of hours watching tv a day is ok, so long as you balance out the type of programs. I love watching Sci-fi shows, but also really love the discovery and history channel. So i guess its all up to you and what you let your eyes and brain take in.

I think it depends on the TV shows that you watch and you follow. A good balance of TV as an entertainment and informative tool should be okay.
We really cant live a dull life so we need those comedy shows but a lot of it, yes I believe can make us dumb. We laugh about people who act silly and stuff.
But we still need to watch the TV so that we can be informed, like watching the news or other documentary channels. Kids can learn and enrich their knowledge by watching shows like the Discovery and National Geographic channels.

i think tv makes us lose are imagination although there are some extreamly educational show on tv at times. I personally dont own a tv if theres anything i want to watch a go to my parents to watch it i always thought i'd miss not having a tv but i do read a fair bit and now find other things to do with my free time that after which i usually feel like i have gotten much more done then sitting in front of a tv
If there is a movie i want to watch i simply watch it on my computer but its not that often

I agree with staria. It would probably depend on the type of T.V. shows you're watching at. Not all of which are of good influence but we could always select those we thought that would be of help in motivating the children to study and for factual events and updates for adults. T.V. programs are not made merely for entertainment. It could be educational as well. There are things that we can't appreciate just by sitting in a four-walled classroom. Students learn best when they can see the whole picture of what has been taught of them. Pure letters and words would just be registered in our short term memory. It's good to see things work in real life. That's why some schools offer educational field trips and the like activities but that's not possible at all times. This is where the importance of educational T.V. shows and news come in.
