Child Labor on Garbage Sites

Child labor on garbage sites - What a horrible situation there is for these kids. They are working for their families in this garbage site.

We were able to watch a documentary. It's all about those families who live in the garbage site in the Philippines. I pity the kids who live there considering that they have no decent house. The parents just get food from the garbage and tries to sort of "recycle" them by frying them again or putting water for it to boil and become a porridge-looking food. One of the parents even said that, it is better to eat those rather than stay in the provinces and eat bananas. Now what kind of thinking was that? Worst case was, these kids need to work for their families. Looking for used bottles and cans in the garbage site. Some of them are still very young. There are cases of injuries too and death because they got rolled off by a bulldozer! It is a really horrible sight to see and I really pity them

Children working for families isn't such a bad thing, children who grow up on farms work, milking cows, plowing fields, working in gardens etc. It isn't the work that's the issue, it's the conditions they live and work under that those of us who are 'better off' take exception to. When farm labor moves to the city, often they are unskilled and unprepared for city life. Often such moves are made in the hope of a better life and once they find themselves away from their homes they are without means to return or even anything to return to if they could. While I pity anyone living and working in such conditions, I find I can not judge them or their love for their children. I wonder what any of us would do if we found that our lives had changed, no house to live in, no land to till, no job to go to and no money to be had.

I can't help but think these people feel they have exhausted every avenue to improve their situation. In some ways I can understand the statement, 'it's better than eating bananas'...bananas aren't a great vitamin source, although they are rich in potassium, they are also not a protein source which children need to build muscle and bone. I hate to think what the conditions were in the country side where these people originated from if they think what they now have is better than what they had. Child labor laws are only concerned with the conditions pertaining to children working for hire, these children are working for survival.

Yes these children are fighting for survival. But in this case, I think the parents should be held responsible. These families may not be fortunate enough to live a normal life, but I think there are still lots of ways to live w/ dignity if they stay in the countryside. If they do not want to eat bananas, then they can still plant other vegetables/fruits. Even if bananas arent really rich in protein, vitamins etc. How can they proudly say that garbage is still better?

Yes the working condition that is the main issue. Though there is also a law against child labor here in PH. I believe too that we cant gauge their love for their children just by looking at their situation, after all we are not the ones who are experiencing such condition. But what I don't understand is the way they look at things, how come it is better to eat and feed your child w/ garbage food rather than bananas? I think they arent in their proper mindset. I have children too and I think I would just beg for food or ask other people to even hire me as their servant so I can at least give a decent life for my kids, even if it is not extravagant.

I don't think I would have liked to see that. I know those kinds of things happen, but I don't know that there is anything that I can do to change it. Just knowing about it makes me want to take some kind of action to change it, but I feel helpless to do so. Did they make any mention of possible solutions for this situation?

That is really sad! I think I would love to have a low-cost house. Of course, it would help if they included a source of income with it. If the people don't have jobs, what good does it do to have a house that they can't afford to take care of?

Actually that is the mindset of these people. What good is it to live in a decent house if their stomach is empty? Sad truth.

As far as I know, the govt is at least doing something about it. Like they offer low-cost houses for them to rent and own overtime. Or some were even given relocation sites, but they are too hard-headed and they choose to go back there because they rant about not having jobs on where they were relocated. I really dont understand how some people think.

hi can a fellow mylotter who is not a Filipino chime in too? I am so sad reading about those families and those poor little kids. Cannot the Philippine government do something for their own people? I mean this is barbaric. those people deserve the same good kind of life as a ny other resident of your country.those parents bore those children and they must care for them. Surely the Philippino government must know about this situation. Is there any way we who are not from your country can help? I am elderly and only have a small social security and ssi check which is mostly taken u p for monthly rent and board here atGold Crest. But this sounds so sad to hear people living in a garbage dump. it sure does not say much for your government to let this go on. they need to help all their citizens not just some.

Of course you can comment here. This discussion is open for all of those who care about the welfare of the children. Yeah, sad truth. I believe and obviously the govt is aware about this problem. We even have a law against child labor here in PH. But they are not strict enough to implement it. Basically, I think the govt provides relocation, but some parents are hard headed. They insist that living there would be better, as they get their source of income there. But if the govt will just implement the laws better and send these people away from such horrible places, these people will be forced to at least get a low cost housing or accept the relocation houses that the govt offer them

They symbolize the failure of the government to alleviate poverty in the country. There are factors that we have to consider. 1st: Corruption 2nd: Scarcity of resources For me, the government should institute efficient mechanism so as to invade and eliminate corruption in the government. But this, sad to say is very hard to happen. The easiest way for me is that I wish I had all the supernatural powers so I can spy on all government documents and transactions and hang all the corrupt officials in front of their offices 1 by 1. the scarity of resources is another thing. we are rich in natural resources so why the hell is the government extract its own natural resources for the benefit of the country. why let the multinational companies sap our wealth and be left with all the toxic wastes and defiled forests.

Right! The govt failed to up the status of the country itself, that's why many people are suffering from poverty. Yes, many chose to stay and live by their poor status, but many still strive but is continually failing to up their status because they have no opportunities. You are right from bringing up corruption as one of the reasons why poverty is still here. The rich only become richer, using the money of the people for their selfish ambitions!

Most of them are coming from provinces who's taking chances or risk in the city because they believe they can give good future for their children but because of lack of education, poverty that;s what happen to them. They dont have any choice but to let their children to help them in order to survive. Pity children are the one who affected in this situation at early stage they already know how to provide foods for the family. I hope government must have programs or project on how to solve this big problem and I hope someday those children in the garbage today we will see them all in the school tomorrow.

Yeah, some dont really have a choice. But some just dont care. All they know is how to produce a big family and leave their children in the streets or work in garbage pits! I hope too that the govt would come up w/ a permanent solution over this matter. And yes a lot of children are out of school. I hope they'll belong where they should be in the 1st place

Awful is the word correct! They get paid, you know how much? For a kilo of rubbish, they get a peso. So that's about 0.04USD. So imagine how much they should be able to collect in a day for them to be able to buy food? A can of sardines here may cost you about P15 pesos so 15kilos of rubbish for a can? And can it feed let's say, 2 parents and God knows how many kids?

Yup that is a very sad reality for us living on a third world country. I guess you can also see that in many countries that are like us. I really am helpless as well since I could not do anything to help them out of it. I wish I could do something for them so their lives could be a little comfortable but I am like them have to attend to my families needs first.

Right, we have to tend to our own families first and doing that just could not lend some for them. It is unfortunate that there are parents that allows their children from making money for them instead the parents are doing it for their children. Although, we can see that it is a family effort at many times that does this.

If only we can do something about it, why not right? But living here in the Philippines nowadays is not easy too. You have to work hard in order to provide the basic necessities that our family needs. I hope these children will be rescued from this kind of life. No child deserves to suffer.

Yeah, I believe that by keeping our families we play our fair share in the society by not belonging to these group of people. I can still accept if it is a family effort but sometimes it is the other way around. And sorry if I cannot stomach the fact that they feed these kids w/ recycled food.

It's a very sad situation. I am deeply moved to hear your story. I also often find, small children who must work. They even eat food that has been discarded by others. I really want to help them. But my my abilities are limited. If I could, I wanted to give their parents jobs. I often bring food to them, not much help, but at least they can eat.

I haven't seen the documentary, but it sounds heartbreaking. Unfortunately, that kind of hunger, starvation, lack of work, lack of safety, etc. goes on all over the world. I wish we could change it, but it's too overwhelming. I guess we do what we can for those we can...

Oh my this is so horrid and sadly it is happening in many countries due to poverty and no employment. My biggest concern is that it is not hygienic and so unhealthy to say the least, the poor children living in this form of environment. I do hope some type of assistance can be implored to such families in this type of situation.

It's really a pity seeing those children looking for used bottles and cans in every garbage they can see. We also have some here like that in our province. But at least, they are a bit decent looking and they have their own trolleys with them. They said they just would like to help their parents. But those that you see in the documentary, they are adamant that they could earn better in the heaps of garbage, rather than in the province. They just don't like to till lands and plants so they chose those jobs.

You are right, though living in the provinces is not at all easy. At least they can choose to live a more decent life there than here in garbage sites! I believe that there are children who do not for the sake of their families, but it would be at least acceptable if both parents were working and striving yet means dont meet. But there were those who just leave all the responsibilities to their kids and all they know is how to produce kids!

Staria, how about putting an urban resettlement site for these slum dwellers with a little help from the government to start a living? and not to make their living from that rubbish place! my god your story has me eeewwwing....really! this is also a big stroke to my fate seeing those many uneducated parents who had many childrens and they just don't care! anyway staria, let us not look at this situation more negatively and face it as a challenge to your country and to your people. you all know that this is a national phenomena because of what your leaders are doing to your country.. we all know what i mean.. if not because of graph and corruption, philippines could be more than progressive now. i hope and pray that all of you are learning from those bad impact to your people because of having corrupt leaders and do not rely on grants and aid anymore. families should strive more to make a living and i'd rather do farming in the province than dwelling in suburban or urban places like manila and earn and see nothing but pollution. i'd rather eat bananas.

Hi zills, as responded above.. I think the govt in all fairness to it is doing something about it. They have some relocation sites and some houses are given for free or for a minimal rent, but some just think that they cannot live there (in those places) and that their source of income lies in the garbage pits! I think the Philippines still has lots of problems to face. And I hope that one by one this gets resolved. This kind of story really had my heart broken. They go down town thinking that life would be better when in reality its not.

A lot of this here in country (Philippines).. A lot are so tolerated by the situation.. Its really not easy! But what I can only say to the parents of these children is they should work for their family especially for their kids.. They made them so its their responsibility. The kids should not work for them! I hope in the near future, it will be changed.

Actually a lot of parents from this kind of family oblige their kids to work. It's not that these kids really have a choice! What an unfortunate situation for them. These kids should be in school and should be given even the basic necessities in life. These parents are so irresponsible and heartless imo!

Indeed there are a lot of street out there not just in the Philippines, anywhere else there are street children, and it is so sad seeing this children being deprive of decent living. What can we do for them? Probably in just a little way we can help once when we pass by them, give alms or food, whatever we can. But what i wish more is that the government will have a more comprehensive and effective way to give them even a decent shelter and send them to school, so that they will have a better future.

Yes, they need a permanent/long term solution. Even if many people give alms (btw it isnt allowed in PH) it wont be enough, these wont be able to feed them everyday. The govt should do something, educate them and help them stand in life.

I am glad I didn't see that! I know things like that go on in many countries, and it is SOO sad. Why would anyone think eating garbage was better than eating bananas? I just hope there is something that can be done, but I don't know what it could be. Here in the States there are a lot of government programs for poor people. There are still homeless people eating out of garbage cans. Poverty is too rampant for donations to help much and I don't know what else could be done. It is hard to imagine living like that, but it could happen to anyone.

There is nothing that I can think of that would help. Even with the programs for poor people, there are still tons of them. It is hard to believe that someone would refuse help because they think they are better off. Some people refuse help because they are too proud also. If they need help, which they must or they wouldn't be living off garbage, they should put their pride aside and think of their children's health and future.

Yeah, it is truly sad and heartbreaking. You know yes there are govt projects. But these people should also make a stand against poverty. If they will just continue to dwell in it nothing will happen, nothing will change. Some even refuse the help that's given to them. Because they believe that they are better off there. They do not even think about the health of their children. So what can the govt do? What can mere citizens do to help them if they are unwilling?

We used to live somewhere in Manila where my parents' home was just about a kilometer or two from a mountain of garbage or what they call Smokey Mountain in the capital city here in our country. All the garbage collected in the city were dumped in that place, the people who lived near the place waited for the dump trucks to arrive early morning and they are found hunting for anything that can be sold for some amount like a piece of metal or steel, aluminum, bottles or anything that can be of their use like some old stuffs or foods, I hope you know what I mean. Anyway, after they are done looking for some stuffs in that pile of garbage they are going to put that side of the mountain to flame. The stuffs that they found were brought to nearby junk shop and exchange for money. These are done mostly by children aged 15 years old and below. Their parents just let them do that because they say that there is money in the garbage thrown by others. This practice as we all know is hazardous to health specially of the children and the government seems to be blindfolded about this matter.

This is actually true. We have a relative in Tondo Manila. We can smell the smokey mountain (dump site) from there. This sight is truly extreme, I really pity these kids. They should not be working in the 1st place, instead they should enjoy their childhood but they are left w/ no choice :(

With such a situation happening there, it's for the government to take actions and make some changes to improve the life of people there. I would have to agree with that the parents say, it's better to eat those leftover food than bananas in provinces because at least there's proper food, than just fruits. I pity the kids too, but they have no choice. They have to work to survive, just that they are in the wrong environment.
