How many partitions your hard disk has?

Before installing an Operating System to your hard disk, partitioning is what usually done. It is the process of dividing your hard disk capacity into different storage drives. If your hard disk has a large capacity it's usually partitioned into 2 or more drives, but 2 partitions is what usually done. 1 partition for Drive C: where the Operating System usually installed and another one for Drive D: where usually use for saving you data. Other's are partitioning their hard disk into 3 or more drives especially for those who is installing more than one Operating System, for example, one partition for WinXP and another one for Win7. Mine has 3 partitions right now, namely C, D and E. I am planning to install a Windows Server OS in my drive E coz I am going to practice client-server networking. How about you, how many partitions your hard disk has? =)

I am currently using two hard drives and they are both partitioned into 2 partitions which means I have 4 drives namely C, D, E and F. The first one is used for the OS and other applications; the second one is where I store very important files and documents; the third one is where I put all the fun stuff like games, movies and music; and the last one is where all miscellaneous files that I have. Well it's good to be organized as they don't clutter. It's also easier to maintain your files and drives when they are partitioned.

Wow, you must have a huge disk space in total. It's good that you have made a good arrangement of your files. Organizing and managing your files well is really helpful and made it much easier to access. What you have done is really great, keep it up. Thank you for your response.

Yeah it is really of big help. I added another hard disk so that I won't have to worry about the storage capacity of my computer and to avoid slowing it down. It's easier to manage files as well and don't get lost. Well I'm glad you appreciate it.
Have a nice day.

That is a good division of work you did, one partition for past data and another partition for the present ones. Two partitions for home PC is also good. Thank you for your response.

That's good, at least when one partition becomes infected, you can only format that partition and do nothing to the other partitions. Thank you for your response.

Earlier I had 4 partitions which I didn't like it. When I gone for the system updation, I made to 3 ie C: D: & E: like what you have. The usable date has been categorised and accordingly placed with respective drives. I have the XP and W7 loaded differently and both will used as per my requirement and mood.
Thank-s

Having two different OS is good and you can choose among them which one is the most suitable for what task you are going to do since each has it's own advantages and disadvantages. Having 3 partitions is a good setting. Thank you for your response.

I do have two partitions for my desktop computer.
One partition has larger space and it is reserved for installing the operating system and other daily used software.
The other smaller partition is solely for storing my data.
I found out by having different partitions for different purposes were very useful.
The operating system of my computer was corrupted.
But it never affected my the other partition where I stored my data.
After formatting and installing a fresh copy of my operating system, my data at the other partition was still the same.

That is really the main purpose of partitioning our harddisk. =) It is very useful indeed. Good thing that you yourself have seen and experienced how useful for us to partition our harddisk. Thank you for your response.

Hi..
Generally if user having less size hard disk then 2 is okay.. But if we having big size of hard disk then i always prefer to have more than 2 partition. Well with help of more partition i can arrange my files more efficiently. And finding files is also lot easier if there are more partition. It having lot more benefits too.

Yeah, having a large capacity hard disk is better has 2 or more partitions while it's not advisable to do in a small capacity hard disk since every partition is also eating space. But yes, partitioning of hard disk helps us to organize our files well. Thank you for your response.

I Seriously recommend to use separate partitions for operating system + programs, and for your data. This saved me several times, when Windows got corrupted and I had to do a Ghost image rollback or a totally new installation. The data I had was not lost since it was on a separate partition. When the disk itself is the problem this does not help you of course.
This is only for the Windows part. As a Linux user, you usually have a dual-boot system, and that you can do over several disks or just all in one. With today´s disk sizes you can easily install Linux, Windows and more on one physical disk. Linux has at least a small Swap partition and a root partition, and you can choose to make a separate partition for the data in the /home folder. Together with the two partitions for Windows that comes to five. Nice part is that you can mount your Windows partitions in Linux too. But, NTFS partitions are Read-Only, FAT32 are Read-and-Write. But FAT32 partitions have the 2 Gb filesize limit, and with for example Pinnacle Studio's movie recordings that give files up to 20 Gb, that will not work.

Yes, it's really advisable to partition our hard disk especially now that OS can easily infect by virus which sometimes you have no choice but to reformat it or if you have a ghost image of it, much better. Well yeah, once the hard disk itself is the one defective, even it's partitioned, there's almost no way to recover your files in it.
It's also good to have a dual-boot system so that when one crash, you still have a working OS. Wow, you are a Linux user, that's good to know. That gave me an idea, I also want to try Linux OS now. Lol. =) Thank you for all the info that you gave, it's very informative for our fellow myLotters. Thank's for sharing! Happy myLotting!
