can you enjoy a music that you don't even understand a single word being sang?

my roommate said, he does not need to understand the words being said in the music...
it is just that the music gives him a goosebumps all the time...
well, sometimes i appreciate songs from other countries if the melody is really nice.. unlike my roommate that he enjoys all the time and he have his collections too and almost all the beats and rhythms are not differing to each other!!!
i don't know what's wrong but sometimes i am feeling nettle because of his constant teasing by playing his music and dancing.. gggggrrrrrrrrr....

Hi zills: I have listened and I also loved to listen some songs that I don't know their lyrics but I usually care to know what's the meaning of my favorite songs . When I don't understand the languaje or the message of a song I guide myself by the taste of the song: the rhytm, the voice, the feeling that you find of the song. Music speak in an universal languaje and sometimes even if we don't understand what they are saying we can understand the whole feeling that is expressed on the work of this author.

I can always appreciate a good music, doesnt matter if I understand the text or not.But all my favourite songs are favourite to me not only because of the melody but mostly because of the text.

There are songs that I don't get the meaning of the lyrics but I like it. Usually these are anime songs that I don't understand the song at all unless I look for the translation. Sometimes, there's no lyrics at all but completely instrumental but I love it.

i agree with your roommate.it doesnt matter if i can understand the lyrics but as long as i enjoy the beat,i enjoy the music. listening to foreign music/songs is not a hard thing to me.actually i enjoy the rhythm and the melody and not the lyrics itself though it really needs that you have to understand what's the meaning of the song so you can relate to it.And when i think the song i've heard got a nice melody i search its lyrics on the net and translate each words thru babylon so that i can fully absorb the song's implication.i play different types of music depending on my mood and thru this song from other countries help me know some foreign words..it adds little knowledge on me then.

It doesn't make a lot of difference to me if I can or cannot understand the words in a piece of music. As a piano player, I never tend to pay much attention to lyrics in a song anyway, so I guess you could say that my love of music is for the tune, and not the worlds. _Derek

I think a nice melody is an Art! We don't need anything to enjoy the Art, there will be some feelings coming for our heart. That is the definition of Art!
Sometimes, great lyrics make a good music better, but sometimes, i prefer only pure music.

hi zills I would suggest to your roommate a good pair of headphones so you both can enjoy your own music. I can enjoy music with words in another language but some pieces I love just b ecause the lyrics go so well with the music.I also enjoy classical music just for the music.
As for his dancing that I cannot help with, you are on your own there.
shut your eyes I guess and listen to your own favorite music instead.

Music can be very soothing to the soul. Words are not always needed to appreciate the sound of the music we hear. Even if I hear a song in another language and i dont understand the words that are sung, i still have enjoyment in just listening to the music.

Hi Zills,
I have lived abroad in a few countries and during those times been immersed in the countries music, in their mother tongue. It is moe the beat and rhythm rather than the lyrics that draw me to liking a song.
I find that most music has a brain washing effect, the more you hear it in the end you get to like it and end up humming it.m After alll, you can't really sing a long with it unless you can speak the language. But the more you get to hear it over time you find there are certain words or chorus's that you get to learn.

Yes. Melody, tempo, rhythm are more important to me. I'm actually developing a taste for music from different parts of the world, although for now my favourite bands have English vocals. Also, sometimes I wish I didn't understand the silly lyrics of good songs.

I usually like to know what the singer or band is saying in a song, and since most of the songs I enjoy are in English,it isn't difficult for me,but I recently watched some great Korean dramas,Jumong and Kingdom of the winds, which also have some great soundtracks, and there are a few songs I truly enjoyed even if the lyrics weren't translated,so I think I can enjoy music which manages to create a special feeling in my soul even if I don't understand a word of the lyrics. After all,the emotions created by music sometimes can go far beyond what words can express.

I guess you could say that I can since I usually go out to hear a band and when I do I go to a bar I guess it's because I know them that it helps but to be ohnest some of the songs on the radio you can't understand the lyrics I think it has to do with the beat.

Music is the universal language. You don't need to understand them to enjoy them.
I do appreciate other countries' songs specially if the melody is really good.
Maybe, you can ask your roommate to minimize his music because it is already disturbing you. Well if he wouldn't oblige, better use a headphone instead.

Yes actually. I can't understand Chinese at all but do love Chinese songs and dramas and yes also Japanese. I think it doesn't really matter what's being said until the beats are good and the vocals are nice, but understanding would be a plus point though. And actually because of those songs and dramas, I have developed a big interest for Chinese language and am planning to learn it soon =)

i won't ever enjoy the lyrics that i can't understand, usually when im listening music i sing along with the song, i usually printed out the lyrics for me to sing it, lyrics matters, no matter how great the melody is it still the lyrics that cause me to like a song, the meaning makes sense and not the melody itself, but somehow people have their own perspective you're roommate thinks that way and we should respect him/her :)
