new to quilting

Hi everyone. I have never quilted before but come from a long line of avid quilters in my family. I want to make quilts from old t-shirts and was wondering if you could give me any advice before I start cutting. I want to use old denim with the t-shirts. I've never sewn t-shirt material so is there anything special I should know?
