Reading never killed anyone.

I find it rather sad when people tend to act like it is some great horror to pick up a book. Then again, a lot of these people hated reading since they were in school, and it has really not proven to improve when they were older. It just goes to show you that a love for reading is something that needs to be formulated from a young age. Still it is something that you might need to do to learn something but really, no need to act like it is some great horror. No one has ever killed anyone. Unless of course you get a paper cut from the book and then that gets infected and you die, but really a one in a million shot. Still even if it is a short book, it is something.

I love it when people turn their noses up at others when they say reading is one of their hobbies I just think it's quite comical how reading was once valued by all and a highly sought after skill in life now people are happy with the basics and don't read for the pure pleasure of reading. I'm an English and Creative writing student and it's pretty funny when you take 'your personal book' along to a lecture to read in the short intervals . I remember last year some of my fellow course mates where questioning me on how I actually read outside of the set texts of the module I think that was my biggest shock in terms of attitude towards reading .

Some people have this close minded, narrow attitude of not reading any more than they have to. And they seem astonished that anyone would. Really when you think about it, they are doing themselves quite the disservice. Reading for a hobby is something I do. Granted, these days, not as much as I used to but when I have some time to spare here and there I do. Others just look at you like you've grown two heads. Thanks for responding. It is appreciated. Have a nice day.

@megamatt your right people are very close minded these days and seem to think reading the bare minimum is enough I also love to read and usually make time for it despite anything that's going on in my life . @Anitismo set texts can be difficult at times because I generally find it's hard tto actually enjoy a book for the simple matter of it's story when studying a book you generally look deeper and sometimes I guess this destroys the natural feeling of entertainment from the story .

You know, the biggest problem is the world wide web.
Have you ever noticed how people spend so much time online instead of having their noses glued in a book?
It's rare to see that now, except maybe at the library.
The next problem is cell phones. People spend more time on them than they used to when it was only a home phone that was available for use.
I myself spend less time reading, but I'm busy working most of the time.
If you consider discussions on myLot and on the web reading, then some people still do it. But it's not the same as reading an actual book.
Even the ereaders out there don't take the place of paper. It's not the same when you can touch a screen and magically turn a page.
Long gone are the days of people just sitting around and reading a good book, book clubs have gone the way of the dinosaurs, as will books soon enough if we don't start reading again.
Books will turn into paperweights and firewood when people become bored of them.
It's just not right.

as much as i love reading the hard copy of a book. i tend to have trouble finding books that i want to read in hard copy. i miss the actual scent of a new or used book. however, i can get more books online and read them faster on the computer which means i can read more in one day than i can with a hard back. the downside when electricity goes off or the laptop has no more batter power.

I do spend a fair amount of time on the web but at the same time, nothing beats an actual book in my hand. I think that is an experience that never will be properly replaced in my eyes. Then again, we are a dying breed, and eventually everything will be electronic. Which is in fact a shame. I think the only time I really prefer e books to regular books is for school, but that's more for time saving purposes in looking things up. Thanks for responding. It is appreciated. Have a nice day.

kris182_2000: Well said. I agree. Computers and cell phones are IN; books are OUT in today's world.
I love reading and I do it everyday. But, I have to admit, I am liking the idea of an e-reader more and more when I think of all the books I could carry with me. And I look at my wall of bookcases holding hundreds of books and think how much room I would have.
Nonetheless, the internet will never replace the adventures I've had, the places I've been, the people I've met, the things I've learned through reading books.

You have about as much chance of dying from reading a book as you do of dying from watching a movie, listening to a song, or surfing the web. I personally think the latter two are rotting the brain... but that's just me.
I'm an oddity at my school. People are SHOCKED that I have a new book with me every week, and I hate having to explain that I ADORE reading and I always have. It really breaks my heart that so many people don't like to read.

Very true, you have about as much chance with those three. True, you could die by just standing in the middle of a empty field and something could fall out of the sky onto your head. Its not likely to happen but it really could in fact happen. Still the actual act of standing in the field is not going to kill you, just being in the wrong place at the wrong time, just like the actual act of reading a book is not going to kill you, even though there might be circumstances that you might.
Still reading is a rather lost art for sure these days. There are people who would not really read a lot and they are really doing themselves a disservice more than anything. They might accidentally learn something that could enrich their lives by reading a book. Thanks for responding. It is appreciated. Have a nice day.

That is very true. Also, I think the example set by the parents is very important. I personally come from a family where my parents were always reading, and I honestly think that's partly why I like reading so much myself.

Parents need to really set an example. The problem is when the parents themselves cannot be too excited about reading. Often times, children can develop a love for reading despite the lack of excitement being exhibited by their parents. Still parents need to be a good role model for their children. Mine read to me at a young age and I think I was better off for it. Thanks for responding. It is appreciated. Have a nice day.

I couldn't agree more with parents reading is essential even if it is to a young child this helps set an example or a benchmark if you will which may lead you down on the path of being well-read . Maybe parents are getting lazier? Are maybe kids are too readily distracted by all the technological or alternative entertainments available ?

Definitely I think they need to set the example even they fail to like reading I think as a parent you generally want to expose your child to new ideas and make them creative. In some sense even reading can build up a sense of motivation to do certain things later in life rather than take the easy way out and sit back and do nothing . I'm the same both my parents read to me from a young age and I developed my love of reading through them .

Well people who read have a wider range of things that they are exposed to, as opposed to people who do not read. That much is for sure. Intelligence might have a little bit to do about it, but perhaps you do have to be intelligent to an extent to realize that reading is something that you have to do, to open your mind to new experiences and ideas. Thanks for responding. It is appreciated. Have a nice day.

Yeah I'll agree with that megamatt at least to some extent anyway but I don't think it just boils down to people that read I think if your a reader you need to take things and be able to relate it to everyday life , maybe even be able to apply certain theories to your everyday life. One things for sure as a reader were certainly open to new ideas .

I'm not sure that people who read are more intelligent maybe more open to different ideas and cane relate things in life to something from a text but I can't see how reading can make us more intelligent than someone else as each individual usually have their own intelligence in some subject which may not have anything to do with reading .

I very much agree with you!Book nouse of gold,a beautiful woman in the book.No knowledge of a person, like a empty bucket, for even then a large belly is empty.Learning must have a good habit,or no matter how good the results will not be prepared. With some people treat learning only momentary enthusiasm, not insist. This never learn anything. When the time to look again felt the same would kill himself.

I think reading is a good habit for everyone of us. We maybe get feed up with books when we are in schools. But that should never be a reason to leave books and reading.
Reading can give us so many informations and knowledge. Without reading, we will be like an idiot. We may not take up a book to read, but in fact,we are reading every day, when we browse news on the computers, we are reading. When we are discussing with mylotters, we are reading too.
In fact, reading won't kill us, but enrich our life and make our life more happy.

Without reading, there are some rather sheltered lives to be lead. There are so many things to learn(and so little time as well). Knowledge is a powerful thing for sure. It is something that we can gather through the various books that are really out there. So it is time to enrich your lives and pick up a book. Thanks for responding. It is appreciated. Have a nice day.

With the era of technology as a way for children to be entertained, it is hard to get them engaged in a book where they actually have to use their imagination and be actively engaged. Students tend to choose short books with less than 100 pages and authors are accomodating that. Few books that are being written for the grades 2-6 are good literature. Even the Ramona books are considered too hard for my fourth graders. Books that I read as a second grader, are not being read until late third grade.
I love to read. I love the library, all the books and the displays. The big comfy chairs in the reading room and the hushed conversations. I wish I had more time to read something that was not a board book(baby book).

Technology is both the best and worst thing that ever happened to the world at times, I think. It has improved the world in so many ways. Unfortunately, on the flip side, it has really hurt the world in many other ways. People are not going to get too engaged in literature and there is a decrease of quality literature for those younger people, which does kind of present a problem with establishing a love for reading. Thanks for responding. It is appreciated. Have a nice day.
