Killing is always a mortal sin.
The word defense is stated in "self-defense", which means, you can defend yourself against your enemy by disabling him or whatsover, but not taking his life.

If you're thinking that kiling is a sin though necessary in terms of religion, then you may not have heard of God's people killing their enemy when they attacked the city of jerico and thousands of philistians led by the god fearing king david. What do you think, thinker?

Killing is a sin both in general and religion terms. You're taking someone's life under your own hands as a sinner like the enemy.
About the God's people killing, God is perfect and has his ways, and sometimes they are just.. mysterious.

I would kill if I had to in self-defense or to defend someone else. I would not kill in war. I don't believe in war. I'd rather go to prison than to kill a bunch of innocent people.

I had an impulse to kill at one time. As I saw it, it was the only way to put an end to an extremely difficult, but long-standing situation. The desire was so strong that it took, litteraly, every ounce of courage and strength that God could possibly give me to stop myself from killing that monster!
As things turned out, I really should have killed him. Then, at least, the other person involved would have had a few years of peace.
