I check forecasts first, but then I go to the radar map to see if there are any systems moving this way. If so, most sites allow animation and I am able to see how fast the system is moving and what route it is taking. From there, I check out the surface analysis to see the positions of high and low pressure systems and which ones will be affecting this area. Having an aviation background, I began my study of the science when I was involved in that. That also taught me how to read aviation coded forecasts.

I have about 4 websites I check every morning, and depending on weather, several times through out the day. I am a wildland firefighter, so weather plays a big part for us. On days we are under a warning for critical fire danger I check it about every hour on the hour. And send out a text to all my crew on the current situation.
