Bought a laptop on eBay today.

I realized after posting a discussion about my laptop yesterday, that I really needed to make a decision fast about getting a replacement laptop.
So, after much pondering over 2 identical models, which ironically are the exact same as the one I have now, I went for the one that cost a little more.
The reasoning behind this was that the battery gives a charge of over 2 hours, versus 10-15 minutes on the other one, versus mine, which holds for barely 5 minutes.
It also has a cd burner, which the other doesn't, nor does my current one. That's a bit of an advantage for me, I'd like to burn some of the music on my hard drive at some point. My boss told me just to let her know what I wanted and that she'd do it herself, but with it on my hard drive, it's not an option.
I have to pick it up on Monday which means my current laptop will have to stay on all weekend, despite not wanting to do that. I can't risk not being able to turn it back on when I need it.
The good thing about replacing my laptop with an identical one is that I can just install the memory from this one into that one, and the hard drive if necessary. I didn't want to risk the chance of not being able to do this with any other laptop.
So now I just have to wait until Monday, not a long time, but certainly a long time for this laptop to have to stay on, since I can't afford to let it shut down.
I guess I'm also afraid of trying new things, if I got a different laptop, I may not like it.
The other issue was with this seller, it's local so I can pick it up. I've had issues with Paypal in the past and was ripped off by a seller, never received my item and had to pay through Paypal, but off eBay, so there was no way to deal with the problem.
My current laptop was purchased the same way that I'm getting the new one, which is great, so there's local support and an option to return it if something goes wrong with it.
But hopefully this one works well.

Just how old is this laptop? I've never seen a laptop that did not have a CD/DVD reader/writer drive. (Other than a netbook, but that's a horse of a different colour)
If you are buying stuff off an Ebay seller, you should never ever agree to a transaction that is off Ebay because, as you found out, you are not protected if you do that.

This is through an eBay store that has their shipping warehouse where I live, and they offer free local pickup.
This one is close to 8 years old, date on it is 2003.
The problem I had with that one seller was that he knew he could get away with what he did, he was in another country. He claimed he sent it but it never got here. I opened a dispute, he promised to send another one and told me to close the dispute. Couldn't do anything after that.
I deal locally from now on.

I suppose that there is always a risk of fraud when you are dealing with private sellers or buyers and its a high value item. Local pickup is good though.

Never do an eBay transaction off of eBay. More times than not it ends up being a scam and you lose your money. You have to ask yourself, why would the seller want to have a transaction outside of eBay when eBay has many features making it easier. Many scammers prefer to find you on Ebay and then seduce you into paying through paypal. This way Ebay's buyer Protection Program doesn't apply, and there is noone to get the money back on your behalf.

Good for you. It is best to get one before the one you are using completely quits.

I am glad that you are getting the problem taken care of sooner, rather than later. It is great that you know how to move everything over. My favorite computer geek says that after a year, you need a new battery.

I'm glad you got your laptop issue resolved. I hope the current one will hold up until you are able to get the new one. Why do you have to wait until Monday? Maybe you said it and I missed it. Is the place closed on weekends? Good luck with that!

I hope it all works out for you.
We have to put trust in the sellers on Ebay and hope they are honest.
Good luck with everything.

I hoped to replace mine with an identical one, but I was not that lucky. My problem was strictly hardware, so I could have just taken all the guts out and installed it into a new one, but alas, I could not get a brand new shell. I ended up getting a new refurb, with good hardware. Hopefully the damn power port doesn't break. That's happened to every laptop I've ever owned so far, except for this one.
