Online Books

With the invention of the Nook etc people don't need the actual book in their hands, in fact they can carry many books with them at one time. Would you be comfortable if in the future that was the standard way to read books? Personally, I would miss the bookstore. Compared to surfing a "book"store website for a book to download to my tablet, I prefer a bookstore that I can browse through. I spend hours in Barnes and Noble and love every minute. Would readers still be satisfied with ebooks or will we continue to have paper books?

I hope that we will still have paper books (hard copies) because I might not discover many good writers if I hadn't been caught by the cover of the book first.

I've looked at the Kindles and stuff and I just like the feel of a paper book in my hands and enjoy flipping the pages. Plus, if I go somewhere and want to read I don't have to worry about a battery dying in the middle of a chapter or something. lol.

Personally, I would be comfortable with ebooks. In the field of nursing, I really need lots of books, medical dictionaries, anatomy and physiology books, physical assessments, surgical books etc. It really is a big help for me to have ebooks in my laptop because info's are all in there. But for others, not all can afford to buy the gadget first. Electricity is also needed, you have to charge the battery etc.

that's a good point. When it comes to medical books/materials, I can see how online versions would be best. Good point mogulCherubim!

I will not purchase an e-book. I don't like reading off a computer. I've never tried an e-reader but I prefer to have the real book in my hands. I know this is part of the evolution of technology, and is also "green" because it saves paper, but if there were no books printed anymore that would surely put a lot of people out of work. I prefer holding the real book in my hand. I love book stores too much; I have to steer clear of them. I do have my wish list on amazon and shop for books there a lot of the times because they are cheaper than at the bookstores. I don't need to be buying more books because I have over 200 unread books in my house, but I still get new ones. I have been winning books from different sites lately. That's fun. I love that! Not that I need anymore books. The books I do have are so old that when I say I am reading a certain book people are probably thinking "What took you so long?" I prefer to hold the book in my hand and will continue to feel that way. I understand the convenience and portability of an e-reader, that the books are cheaper that way, but I still like the book. I can't imagine putting a whole industry out of business, especially an industry I hope to be a part of by becoming a published author.

Mostly I am participating on Thursdays on Twitter. It's Chapters Indigo (Canada) that has a trivia question at 3:00 every Thursday on Twitter. I have won 4 or 5 books from them, and one from another contest at Celebrity Cafe. There is also a website called Writerspace.com that has a bunch of monthly giveaways from different authors but I haven't won anything through them yet (but have received stuff from the authors in the mail - bookmarks, magnets, newsletters).

thanks for your response! I agree with you! Looking at a computer screen in order to read a whole book would tire my eyes out too quickly! What site is it that you are winning books from?

The text is the significant thing, not the medium. Reading Sumerian myths on clay tablets can feel more "real", but doesn't necessarily improve your understanding of the subject matter, just your knowledge. Depending on the kind of material you'd like to read, but, one does have advantages over the other. Another feature to bear in mind is that paper books don't require power to function. They can be read everywhere with adequate light, and are perfect travelling companions for precisely this reason. Paper books are still my preferred though. They don't require batteries, and I can read them just about anywhere. Time will tell whether ebooks are a practical alternative. At the moment, the whole thing is still in its infancy, and a upright solution has yet to appear.

I myself do most of my book shopping online but I would miss the feel of real book and I know for a fact that if the e-readers take completely over then I'll be sticking to older books as there's certainly enough to keep me occupied for my lifetime . I myself want to be a writer and would refuse the rights to be published via an e-reader and would have to have a physical book as it's the real deal to me. I do however think that the e-reader will not take over completely from physical books though at least not for quite awhile .

I hope your right about e-readers not taking over for awhile. that is interesting though- I wonder how authors of today have a choice about being published as ebooks and what they think of it.

I'm sure they do it'll be in the rights of the contract somewhere and to me I'd only ever use an e-book as a self-publishing form but even then that would be to raise money to put the books into physical print . I hope authors continue to use physical books for sometime yet though despite the fact that e-books can cost a fraction of the price of a physical book at time .

I love to handle books, feel the texture of the pages and covers, to look on them in my bookcases to remind myself of good reads I've had in the past. I would hate to carry about with me a piece of machinery to read from. And I like to re-read my old books with coffee stains and scribbles and people's phone numbers written on the covers. Long live books!

I do not own one of the new ebook readers yet, but so far I have not been persuaded that I would even want to read one book on the screen. When it comes to longer documents, I would much rather read on paper. It is nice to have a book in hand, and to go to a library and bookstore. Just the same, I think it would be interesting to try one of the ebook readers. There may be times where I find it a better option.

Hi Sadie1675, it's quite handy to do reading after having the facility of ebooks. We just need an ebook reading device. There are huge number of books are available in it. It's small and light for us to carry along and do our reading whenever and wherever conveniently. anyway I never like to spend money to buy such device for I'm still like to read the traditional printed books. To me book page shown on the pc screen is rather dazzlingly bright though the pc is set to the lowest luminance. I usually read online newspaper daily for I can get the latest news from all parts of the world at the very first time. I tend to enjoy my reading lying on the bed before bedtime Happy posting

I think paper books will never run out of style. The classic way of reading will always be appreciated. It's different to go over the leaf one by one as we read each page and the smell of the book is great. I really love the smell of books and it really relaxes me. Even though i can have books on my phone and my tablet as well, i still prefer to read the paper books. Someday it will be scarce but it will never run out of existence. Newly published books might not be available in paper anymore because in the future we might not have trees to make paper.

Sadie.....for me, the book is a window to science and knowledge, I highly appreciate for that the existence of the ebook, but the existence of paper books are still desperately needed. More of people who feel comfortable reading the paperbook than an ebook, because reading throught the monitor computer for example, feels not so comfortable.....of course still good for the paper industry is'n it?
