Is it biblical to confess our sins to the priest?

Going against an ordinance of God is a sin and one of those ordinances I can mention is to confess our sins to Him alone. So, why confess to the priest? Not unless maybe you stole from the priest himself and you ask for his forgiveness....but not at the confessional box

I totally agree with you. No where in the word of God does it say we should confess our sins to a priest or any earthly person for that matter. We repent and confess our sins to the only on who is able to forgive our sins and that is God himself.

But, Jesus conveyed the power to forgive sins to His apostles, not to anyone else. "Whose sins you shall forgive they are forgiven them. Whose sins you shall retain they are retained." This is the way Jesus wants it.

Hi toyota, It is straightforward enough. When Jesus Christ told Peter: “How blessed you are, Simon son of Jonah, since flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, though my Father in heaven has. I tell you that you are Peter, and it is on this rock that I will build my congregation, and the powers of hell will not conquer it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you prohibit on earth will have been prohibited in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will have been permitted in heaven...” (Matthew 16: 17-19,International Standard Version), He gave Peter, and to his successors for that matter, the authority to forgive sins. God always forgives, but how can we know we are forgiven unless we approach the one whom He gave the authority to do so? If I "go direct to God," it is like telling my girlfriend "I'm sorry for the things I've done that hurt you" from a million miles away without even the benefit of a messenger. We are still material beings talking to an immaterial entity who took a lot of trouble being with us in human form to show us the way.

You are correct, only God can forgive sin.

Hi toyota4k, I myself can not find it in the bible which explicitly says that we should confess our sins to the priest. However, in the book of Matthew 16:19 "And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." Jesus has given Peter (and his successors) authority to forgive sins. You can also find in the book of John 20:23 "Whosesoever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whosesoever sins ye retain, they are retained." These are the passages in the bible I've known that supports the validity of the sacrament of confession. I hope I have shared something useful to you. Keep up the faith.

I agree with you. I feel very uncomfortable with the face to face procedure. Online confession works best for me but, I have to consider the websites more carefully. For now, I feel that my sins and weaknesses are between me and God alone. As long as I talk to Him about it, it is ok.
