To torture us! Seriously, though, we have them because our teachers/professors need to check to make sure we are learning everything we need to. If there were no exams, how much would you study and make an effort to learn? Thought so. (Note that the "you" isn't meant to refer to you personally, it just applies to everyone, see ^.^)
